But how do you feel about the fact that you can't really talk to him as a person, informally? How do you feel about how he'll never really let you in?

He is the only character who does not have a character arc. Don't you feel that's unfair?

You can talk to him as a person, or at least he offers just as much as any other character in ME2 in that department.  He has a friendship style dialog that you can access while female, contrary to popular belief.  And I don't feel that "he'll never really let [me] in."  People master their emotions in different ways.  I don't need to see Jacob blubbering or pounding his fist dramatically into the table (not that I have anything against Thane) to understand him.

As for character arcs, dynamic characters are overrated.  It seems largely assumed that for a character to be effective, that character must undergo change.  Yet sometimes a static character makes more sense for a given situation than a dynamic character.

I do feel that Jacob was treated unfairly, though perhaps not by Bioware.  He has a terrible reputation on these forums and people slide in jabs at him in the most bizarre places.  You could be discussing the benefits of one shotgun over another and find diatribes against Jacob interspersed throughout.  There's a lot of "Come on, it's just Jacob" talk as well.  Don't ask me to dig any up, please.  I'd bet you've seen it.

I have.

See, I disagree, I do think Jacob was treated unfairly by BioWare. Everything from the way they make femShep sound around him (which discourages people from his character) to the sparse lines his romance was given in LotSB.

Jacob could have been as universally liked as Wrex. Yet he wasn't. And I don't think that had to happen.

... I hope you don't think I'm coming from a place of derisiveness here. I can see from the other posts that I might be unwelcome, so if so, let me know and I'll mosey on out.

I didn't interpret your posts as derisive.

It's true that the odds are stacked against Jacob.  And it's true that Bioware is to blame for plenty of that.  I think that the forums blew a lot of what was questionable about Jacob out of proportion, though.  His final romance scene isn't even that bad.  I saw it before I ever posted much on these forums, so I wasn't aware that everyone thought it was hilarious.  I didn't find it all that funny.  It seemed a little weird, but I had no idea it was such a big deal until I started posting here more frequently.

But I don't think Jacob could have ever been as universally liked as Wrex.  Look at the game's target audience.  Adolescent males, right?  Which character is going to be more popular, a giant lizard man that recommends cannibalizing ineffective leaders or a human man, possibly perceived as competition?  When heterosexual men create female Shepards, do they find her attractive?  Some do, certainly.  How do they feel, then, when a man that is likely far more in shape and masculine than them by our culture's standards is presented as a romance option?  Threatened, at least partially/subconsciously?  Even if Bioware had written female Shepard's lines in that romance differently, or if Hale had delivered them differently, the romance would still feature a character that could be viewed as an attack on a player's masculinity.

I'm not saying everyone plays this way or interprets things this way.  I'm just commenting on the interesting psychology at work when roleplaying a different sex than your own.

How would you have presented Jacob to make him more appealing?

Hmm. I would've changed two things, I think.

I would have kept Lazarus Station Jacob and Freedom's Progress Jacob. After you board the Normandy he changes. My warm fuzzy feelings for Jacob start to deteriorate as soon as he makes me feel like I'm not welcome and he's not interested in me getting to know him. :( But on Lazarus he was so damn likable.

Then I would have changed his loyalty mission. Instead of having another daddy issue - because Jacob just really isn't the daddy issue type - let's go on a joint rescue mission where Shepard and Jacob are co heroes. We head out, we save some people, we kick some batarian ass, we have fun. It would be refreshing and a nice relief. Instead they give you a daddy issue mission that isn't a daddy issue mission, it's weird.

I do think Jacob could be as well liked as Wrex. Know why Jacob is special? As a friend of mine said, he's the only one who would know what it's like to be Shepard. For once you could have a friend and an equal you can really level with. You can laugh together, criticize politicians together, trade stories together. Jacob could be a confidante and a trusted friend. Make a character enjoyable enough to be around and male gamers won't feel threatened, they'll say "he's my bro, I'll kill you if you dis him".

I don't want to see him per se. It's just like a car crash on the highway, you can't help but look.

@Nightwriter

I don't see why you would have to mosey along. Your not flame baiting, you are voice a reasonably stated dissenting opinion. Nothing wrong with sparking healthy discussion.

On an unrelated note, I can imagine Kaidan and Ashley critiquing Jacob and Miranda's Greek marble statue bodies.

Kaidan:"I can see why Shepard is with Cerberus. They have...an interesting uniform protocol gunnery chief."

Ashley:"Put your tongue back in your mouth LT."

Kaidan:"Don't take the moral high ground with me Gunnery Chief, I've seen the photo of you and servicewomen Bhatia grinning like chesire cats at the beach with Mr. Taylor."

Ashley:"Our unit was on shore leave LT."

Kaidan:"Jacob was in the 232, Chief. You and Bhatia were in the 212."

Ashley:"I should go."

Kaidan:"That only works when Shepard does it Chief."

Ashley:"It was worth shot LT. Wait shouldn't one of us have died on Virmire."

Joker:"Creeepy....last time I go out drinking with the Commander"

EDI:"Come back to bed, Jeff."

Joker:"Okay...I'd REALLY like to wake up now."

Side note:  Yeah that was pretty weird but I've only had 8 hours asleep over the past two days.

Okay yeah that was pretty hilarious. And while sleep deprived no less.

I actually thought Kaidan and Ashley were going to start wondering if Shepard loves them less because they don't have smexy skintight outfits.

Well I can't speak for everyone, but I don't mind healthy discussion. You went into great detail describing what you did and didn't like and why.

As for my little sketch, originally I was going to go for exactly that but when I write it takes a mind of it's own. Having the conversation be Joker's dream seemed to work out better, it would explain why Ash and Kaidan are discussing ME2 events when one of them should be dead.

If you like that one you should scroll back through some of the older posts. I've done quite few. I only intended to do one but everyone seems to like them and I like making people happy. I do worry that I'll be responsible forgiving Gash post concussion syndrome at some point though.

@Gash

What does a river in Egypt have to do with anything  You know I try to keep things in character Gash. I think it helps with the humor. You are right though, if Tricia Helfer was telling me to come back to bed, I'd come back to bed.

I may have to ship you some pillows to put around your chair, that way you won't hurt you head when you keeping falling out it. I think a goose down pillows would work best, only the good stuff, Jacob wouldn't have it any other way.

Lol, fantastic   <3

I wouldn't be too upset though if they gave Jacob some actual armor.  I'm not a fan of the bulky stuff but I'm even less a fan of spandex... it is the enemy >:o.  Something in between would be nice I guess.  Somethign that looks like it would offer some protection.  I feel the same way about Miranda too.  I would go with the color scheme from their alt. outfits though personally because I like those better.
Maybe that is why there was no other security personel left by the time you woke up, Jacob was the last one alive because of his awesome biotics... but everyone else was killed quickly due to their flimsy armor.  It would be neet if, in ME 3, you got more of a chocie as to what your crew was wearing, not to mention, without having to buy some dlc armor pack that does nothing.  And I swear... if Garrus still has a hole in his armor in ME3... >:o  But back to the point.  Even if they weren't going to do armor again like they did in ME 1 then having a choice like between three themes or something would be nice.

I couldn't have said it better myself Festi. The lack of armor for squad mates in ME2 was really disturbing. I mean you putting together a team of the best and upgrading the most advanced ship in Citadel space. So you go to battle in pajamas? Maybe the Collectors were just abducting humans because they didn't get a slumber party invite.

All started there! They had the Good Stuff, that's what the pyramids are going to outlive everything we have built! Yes it does, you can simply write about Jacob running in circles screaming "LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL", but that's OOC, so it's less funny then a joke when a character does/says something that he/she might actually say. They are very few straight men that would've said no, of course they have no knowledge of the Good Stuff. However it can also go wrong, like that "Yeah, I came back to bed, it was great, but that also caused the death of 95% of the entire human population.... Still worth it." :P

Thanks dude! That will help better then this Covenant Hover Chair Deluxe Prophet edition *chair flies up* *hits with head against the ceilling* Of course, we, JT fans are the only ones that truly know what's the Good Stuff...

Oh, Gash this is for you.

Yeah I think the problem was that a lot of times people criticize Jacob, they do it through petty bashing completely unprovoked so people tend to get easily defensive. But yeah, you went the opposite route and I actually agree with some of your points. I wouldn't have mind if the writers went the buddy route more thoroughly with Jacob's dialogue. It seemed like they started to at the end with the whole "Spilling Drinks on the Citadel", but they could've done a much better job. One of the things I'm pulling for in ME3.

So much this. I really liked how Jacob was presented as emotionally stable, with a good head on his shoulders and no serious personal issues. It added a stabilizing element to the crew and gave him the potential to be a peer of Shepard's (for once, someone who didn't need Shepard's help). But having the loyalty mission went completely against that characterization, and it really didn't feel right for his character. To top it off, the missions isn't really that much about Jacob anyway, so it was entirely unecessary to throw in the daddy issue angle. Honestly the mission felt like an N7 mission with the captain being Jacob's father just kinda thrown in.

I did like Jacob either way, but I really feel they made some poor choices with his loyalty mission.

Jacob:"Joker? Not used to seeing you outside the cockpit."

Joker:"Jacob? Isn't Kasumi usually spying on your workouts about now?"

Jacob:"I had a meeting with the Commander and Miranda. I had to change my schedule."

Joker"I expected at least some reaction out of that statement."

Jacob:"I figured I'd use Kasumi's curiosity to my advantage. Garrus, Tali, and I will develop a security upgrade for the Normandy. We implement on the armory first. Once Kasumi manages to circumvent the system, we meet up and devise an upgrade."

Joker:"And here I thought you liked Kasumi leering at you. Cute, petite, Japanese girl with sticky fingers and an ab obsession. Sounds like a good time to me."

Jane Shepard:"Joker!"

Joker:"I'm just saying Commander....how do you keep doing that?"

Jacob:"Anyway what are you doing down here."

Joker:"Erm...Tali's working on system upgrades. Got tired of sitting in my chair, figured I'd come get them myself. Ship practically flies itself anyway."

EDI:"Only because your productivity drops 84.5% when Shepard is not looking over your shoulder Jeff."

Jane Shepard:"Joker, just because EDI has access to the ships systems doesn't given you license to slack off."

Joker:"Just saving my energy for the dogfights Commander. Your systems seem to fine to me EDI. I guess we don't need that upgrade after all."

EDI:"My previous statement was joke, Commander."

I hadn't thought about that. I just picture EDI with her "chess pawn" look. Of course if Joker was taking it that far, I'm sure he could have gotten a hold of an upgraded holographic display for EDI. I think I should write more when I'm tired. I'm literally dozing off at my desk right now. Yet, I keep coming up with conversation ideas.

I think that the only reason why EDI is a mushroom cloud and not a human is because Bioware knew what would be the first thing many people would think would be "Cortana"... Yes and no Gash. It only worked because Shepard gave her immediately approval. As such, Jacob was temporarily granted "I should go" powers. Oh course if Jacob did Shepard's loyalty mission. He could be feasibly granted "I should go" as his bonus talent. Hmm...

Edit: Potential Loyalty Mission Options

Spacer: (Female Love Interest) Meeting Shepard's mother and selecting the appropriate answers to Captain Hannah Shepard's questions about his intentions with her daughter. (Male/Female) Helping Shepard convince his/her mother to take the Admiral promotion that the Alliance has been offering her.

Colonist: Helping Shepard track down the Batarian slaver's responsible for her family's slaughter on Midnoir.

Earthborn: Helping Shepard turn the Reds into a his/her private mercanary group to help defend human colonies in the Terminus Systems.

So without Shep's approval Jacob doesn't have the "I should go" powers? And what about Jacob's "I'm not a fan of forcing thses talks" line? But that would mean someone would have to solve Shep's problem, God forbid that! :P

Go for Spacer, not only because I exclusively play as a Spacer, it would be the most hilarious one. I wonder ih Shep's "I should go" works on his or in this case her mom?

Well, at least Jane gave Jacob the signal to hit Hannah with the good stuff. It wasn't looking to good for Jacob haha. I REALLY need to sleep. I'm getting zanier by the moment.

If Jacob hit Hannah with the biotic Good Stuff then I would recoomnd JT to start running. :P
Seeing as Hannah has the power to even make Shepard go if I was Jacob I would've ran away...
Go get some rest Darc, we don't want you to die. You gave us enough more Good Stuff that we got in an entire month anyway... :wizard:

Well, I can't sleep yet I don't get off work for another hour haha. It's been slow today, so I've been fortunate enough to be able to churn convos today. I'm pretty sure this is the most I've done in day.

You contributed to the Good Stuff! I say it was the most important thing you have done today, even if you are leaving on the first mission to Mars today, this is more important! :P
Darc you really need to put you convos in one place so I can add them to the fanfiction part of the OP!:wizard:
