My next playthrough I'm intending to go with a dps, dual weilding rogue. Companions will be Morrigan, Oghren, and either Shale or Zevran.

I'm pretty keen on going assassin and trying a high cunning build, but am unsure which other specialization would best suit that.

How good is ranger? It sounds like a tempting option if I go Blood Mage with Morrigan, but it looks like bard would be well suited to a high cunning build. Duelist I've never tried before, but at face value it doesn't look very exciting.

Can someone give me some advice here?

I like the Assassin/Duelist combination.

Having Dueling turned on gives you +10 attack and +10 defense (when learned Keen Defense), what is not really bad. ;)

I turn Pinpoint Strike on when an enemy is frozen in order to shatter him.

If you are a melee Rogue, Assassin spec at level 7 then Duelist at level 14. One-on-one, you can take on anything, even Dragons.

Duelest/Ranger

The duelest is a must for duel weilders for defence and attack bounses

Ranger is nice for all your rogues to increase party members

Awakening:

Legionare For magic/damage resistance Or shadow to confuse and stealth your enemys.

Personally I don´t like ranger. But ultimately it depends on your playstyle; Ranger can be useful when used right.

What annoys me, however, is that you can have only 1 summon, so once you get the better ones the other points are wasted.

For the Ranger summons, I find that the Wolf / Blight Wolf summons is handy for tight areas that the Bear cannot get through. In fact, the Bear sometimes has problems getting through certain doorways. The Wolf and Spider are more nimble and get into tighter spots or in amongst baddies and your guys.

Isn't this a bit like with the bard? They can only have one song at a time, so the earlier songs are kind of wasted.

True.

I never sayed I liked Bard^^. I had an entire playthrough where I didn´t level Leliana´s bard and not even used the first skill.
But then, for my playstyle most sustainables suck.
Momentum, indomitable and one of the shield things are about the only ones I use. Other than that, I only activate sustainables if the char is OOM already.

I'm a big supporter of Ranger, it's probably the biggest single damage boost as far as specs go, not to mention the usefulness of a 5th party member. The wolf does decent damage 50-60 ish per attack (unbuffed) at end game, also it's armor reduction howl is irreplaceable if you aren't using Dog. All of them make decent off tanks, but the bear is near unkillable by anything other than bosses. The spider I never used much, I didn't give it much of a chance though. I play on Nightmare and it's spit got resisted every single time I tried it, eventually I just gave up on it.

Other specs get more burst damage, but for sustained damage over the course of a fight and added utility, Ranger gets my dollar.

Edit: I will say it doesn't have much synergy with other rogue specs though, unless you are soloing.  If you are looking for a no brainer good damage spec you can't go wrong with assassin/bard.

Rogue - Assassin - Duelist

and for awakening is

Rogue - Assassin - Duelist - Shadow

with 2 blades ofc :police::police::police:

How do you get so much damage? On which platform? And on what is the strength of the summons based anyways?

Just wondering, because when I tried ranger I didn´t come even close to this damage and found the summons rather useless (except for running in, getting aggro and then throw a fireball).

PC, I'll throw a caveat out that  I usually use melee heavy parties, with my mages mainly being there to buff my melee, buffs will only apply to summons if they are cast AFTER the summons is already out.  To maximize their effectivness make sure all your buffs (haste, champion auras, bard songs, ect, ect) are cast after you summon the pet.

Thanks for the info everyone. I think I'll go with Assassin - Duelist.

The only one I truly like is Duelist. I have taken Assassin as a second spec, but have not taken any included Talents after my initial character. I find that other Rouge Talent selections are better picks for me.

Ranger is about Summoning critters; not my thing. And Bard's songs appear to be about limiting your character. This is the same reason I do not like using Shale's last set of abilities, for to gain benefits for the party, you lose her. I prefer other tactics.

I just don't see what's very attractive about Duelist as a rogue spec. If it were a warrior spec it'd be glorious, but I just find everything it does redundant with either rogue class skills, or with the dual wield talent tree. I do grant it's like the best second spec if you don't plan on putting any points into your second spec, but I just don't find it very compelling. Bard and Assassin mesh beautifully for a melee rogue, fairly well for a ranged rogue(Assassin's mark is handy). Bard/Ranger for a ranger and Assassin/Ranger for melee are also fairly solid. Legionnaire Scout and Shadow both have compelling uses as well.

The Duelist helps bolster an Archer build that is forced into melee, and appears to aid DW builds that may not take all of the talents. My latest character is only using some of the DW Talents, as I do not care for them as a rule. I prefer shields and defense with my other characters, but finally decided to give this build a shot.
