I was womdering - is anybody actually able to buy all those tomes?

I'm in need of a few extra talent points - the guide about the assassin build
I'm trying my hand at says nice things about locksmithing(deft hands etc)
but seems to have forgotten planning them into its skilling plan.

I had originally hoped there would be a few points available through
quests, but apparently you have to pay through the nose for them.
And gold seems to be a very rare and very finite thing in DA:O (unlike
other games where there is actually the possibility to earn money).

So - who has the bucks to buy those books?

Or will gold flow more freely later on? (I did not venture beyond
the arcane tower quest yet).

Based on my own experience, enough gold become available to gather all the best equipment and items for the Main Character by the time you call for the Landsmeet.

You should be able to readily supply your companions with found gear; even some purchases, though perhaps not all of the best gear. For instance, I do not buy the more costly armor from Wade unless it is for the Warden.

I usually don't bother with tomes, because by the time I have spare cash I'm usually not strapped for talent points anymore. That said, level 8 and level 12 are both good time to buy them, since a few new and powerful talent points become available at those points.

There's plenty of gold to be had if you go to Denerim and do a lot of the side quests. If you have one point in Stealing, it will open up the Slim Couldry side quests - a lot of gold to be earned there. Also, check out the barkeep at the Gnawed Noble tavern.

I buy every tome I can, including the one that matches my class in the first camp scene out of Lothering, so it'll reset and I can buy it again. That one will burn almost all of your cash at the time, but after that between pickpocketing, looting, and the junk from locked chests you'll end up rolling in money. If you're desperate for cash past all that, you can craft Potent Lyrium potions for a profit, though that's tedius and takes forever.

I usually only bother with tomes if I'm a rogue. There's a nice little quest in Orzammar that makes you rich with enough coercion... It starts in dust town.

Personally, I snatch up every tome my Warden can use as soon as I have the Sovereigns to afford them. I just like having the extra bit of power those points can give my Warden.

One good reason to do Orzammar early is to snag the Precious Metals quest. That alone can generate 60 gp in profit. Plenty of cash to buy whatever tomes you may wish.

Always for a rogue, never for a warrior, sometimes for a mage. I usually buy at least one skill tome, too.

I did on my first play through, subsequent ones I haven't bothered with them though.

I buy all the skill books avaliable.

I generally roll a mage, and Alistair is my tank and goes with me everywhere. He gets all the rogue/warrior tomes, and I get all the other ones. I end up with a pretty nice array of spells and when it comes time to respec in Awakenings, I have over 100 points to distribute. :D

Well some origins start off with more money/crap to sell.  If you have Blood Dragon armor and don't plan on using it there's 18? G right there if you sell it.

I buy as many tomes as I can afford, no matter what my PC's class. My rogues don't generally need skill tomes, while my mages and warriors usually have to buy at least one skill tome (just to get Stealing, if nothing else). But my warriors and rogues buy all the talent books and my mages buy all the spell books they can.

As for how to afford tomes straight out of Lothering, I know Dwarf Nobles can have a lot of gold when they've finished their origin story (haven't tried this personally).

BDA 1.1 sells for ~4.5  gold, 1.0 sells for 7 something.  Do everyquest in your Origin, every quest in Ostagar and the Wilds, every quest in Lothering, and pickpocket everyone in those areas as well, and depending on Origin you can push 25 to 28 gold by the time you get the first camp scene.  You'l have to buy both backpacks in Ostgar to haul all of the loot though.  Oh, and buy nothing.  If you sell other DLC items like the stuff from Journeys you can push 30.

Simple really. You complete all of the quest and sell everything you can and DON'T buy anything at all.

In Dwarf Noble origin, the note of credit you can get sells for 25gp alone. I actually went as far as to sell all of the weapons and armor that Gorim and I had before going to bed. I literally went into the Shield Quest naked with nothing but my BDA and my money. By the time I got to the camp, I had close to 60gp.

Don't know if this helps other origins but if you are Dwarf Noble, Gorim in Denerim pays you double. Right after buying both tomes and the backpack in Camp, I always head straight to Denerim to unload the post-origin crap at Gorim's and to grab the Archivists Belt (for the +50% experience when reading books.) I'll pickpocket folks along the way but will otherwise leave everything else for later.

I can never have enough points in my spells for my mage, so I buy them constantly. The other tomes, not so much.

You start out strapped for cash, but you can develop a sizable chunk just with loot and vendor by the middle points of the game with no problems.

Oh, you'd be surprised how much the weapons and armor from your temporary companions in the Origins+Ostagar+Ishal sell for...

It's quite amusing to watch the Joining Ritual with Ser Jory and Daveth in their undies, though. Feels completely different.

with the dwarf noble origin ask dace for money to support him in the throne room, do it and he gives you a credit note, go outside and sell it.. 25 gold that carries over when you loose all your gear, save all your loot till after lothering and head direct to denerim, sell to gorim and get double the payment of any other merchant..

the dwarf noble basically swims in money by the end of the game so much so a DN import to awakenings allows you in some cases to buy pretty much anything straight up

i personally always get the tomes for talents, skills and attributes in that level of importance.. rogues and mages i find do better with them than warriors. rogues especially with skills

i still prefer the city elf or human noble personally despite less money
