Just installed the game today and was wondering if the forum would be kind enough to share some non-spoiler insights as to things they realized in hindsight that would have been helpful from the beginning.

I could attempt it but without knowing what you intend to be its difficult, plus DOA is heavily story inclined thus spoilers are hard to avoid.

Tough one to answer w/o including Spoilers. See here for at least one bit of such info:

Uh, sure. Constitution is almost worthless for everyone, and willpower is pretty worthless, too. The warrior "taunt" ability will make everyone in range start attacking him until someone else does ~300+ points of damage to them. Dexterity is the best stat for increasing your survivability, hands-down, so if you get a warrior with a shield, high dexterity, and taunt, you can make things easy on yourself. Taunt everything and just heal that warrior instead of trying to keep everyone else alive.

Mainly, if you raise your warrior's dexterity instead of constitution, you'll find the later game to be much easier. Dexterity raises your defense by one point, and strength only raises attack by 0.5, so... do the math.

Mostly, bad character builds, and not min/maxing, since Dragon Age does not lend itself to more general, well-rounded builds, and having a party nullifies a lot of the disadvantages that normal min/max playing comes with anyway. Once you set up tactics and have characters that are built well, the game practically plays itself, save for a few very challenging fights (I'm looking at you, Branka).

Oh, and for a while I had no idea that my party was penalised for falling in battle... I must have been running around with like 6 or 7 injuries on each party member until near the end of Redcliffe.

For archery characters go into tactics and change the upper right behavior tab from default to "ranged" this way they won't be changing weapons in the middle of every fight without you telling them to. I found that highly annoying on my first play through until I figured that out.

searanox's post reminds me: when a gameplay codex entry comes up, read it. A lot of people have missed things because they assumed something about how the game worked.

Make sure to talk to companions in camp. There's a lot of stuff that only happens there.

If you have the lockpick skill you can just break Sten out of jail. Give Morrigan healing/forcefeild early on. Forcefeild your tank when low on health or when they're grabbed or when they have an effect that deals constant damage. Give fill up Morrigans combat tactic skill set first then do herbalism. Buy the back pack and health poultice recipe from the forgemaster at ostagar.

Good stuff, keep it coming!

Are there any good threads about character builds? I'm partial to min / maxing, myself.

Edit:  I see there's an entire forum dedicated to charater creation!

[TAB] key is your friend. Also, the merchant in your camp, Boghdan, is the most expensive of all the merchants.

Walk around with the tab key pressed and search/take everything.  Bring dog along and have him search for stuff until he brings back no more useful stuff (have dog search in dead trenches (in the deep roads) until he brings something nice).  Finish everything possible in Ostagar and in Lothering (especially the merchants in both places) before moving on, or hurry back to Lothering if you have to go somewhere else (don't dally).  Be sure to check all venders (everywhere) merchandise for special gifts, items with very unique names and backpacks.  Talk to anyone and everyone you can dialog with.  The tab key makes them stand out as they have unique names and your mouse icon changes if you can talk to them.  Be very careful who you decide to kill after dialog.  Characters with unique names will have some use at one point or another depending on what class you play and/or side quest you may be on. Hard Save your game (not quick save, cause auto save will overwrite it) before moving into unfamiliar areas.  And try to gain high favor with all your new companions.

And have fun!

You're going to love it!

When you head toward the exit of Denerim, it'll bring up the city map, which might confuse you or lead you to believe you're stuck in Denerim... but there's a button near the bottom which allows you to switch back to the "Wide Open World" map.

and on the world map, in the upper right hand corner (box) is a  very special place you'll be spending a lot of time at. click on it for a marshmellowy surprise that will make everyone feel and fight better.

Agree with the importance of the TAB key!

Herbalism is a good skill to have on one of your chars, and you should buy recipies for healt potions, lyrium potions and lesser injury kits early, as they seem to be hard to find later in the game. I was starved for potions most of my first run through the game.

I disagree with the categorical statement by a previous poster that willpower and constitution are worthless!  It totally depends on the character. A mage without high willpower is a sad thing. I'd even invest some points on willpower on warrior builds that use up a lot of stamina, as willpower effects your stamina reserves.

Constitution isn't that important, but there's at least one exception in the game for that... a certain large and non-squishy companion is best used as a tank, and needs high constitution to equip the top notch gear available to her.

Also, I wish I had familiarized myself with the tactics options earlier - they really are useful. You should check and adjust tactics for each new companion, and whenever you gain a new tactics slot from leveling up.

Oh, and buy back bags early in the game too. They pay themselves back later. Or do as I did (though not on the first run - first run I always play a game without mods) and get the expanded inventory mod.

Building off that, there's this little place called Ostagar you'll run across earlier in the game.  While you're there, make sure to buy a backpack in the morning section (before traversing to a certain wilderness) and night section (after said traversing).   They'll be plenty cheaper than usual, and it'll really help with the frustrating item limit.

And excuse my attempt at veiling any spoilers.  :police:

My list:

1) Learning how to properly use the tactics window. I couldn't use this well when I started the game causing all my teammates to have a very mixed tactics window. How did that work? Not very well, the results were in fact so poor that I had to lower my difficulty from Normal to Easy to avoid pulling my hair off at any orange or higher encounter. Check a guide on how to make the tactics work so that you don't have to pause the game after each volley of attacks.

2) Tab key! I learned about this half-way through the game and probably missed loads of easy money/xp in the first half just by missing (hidden) clickable objects.

3) Potions. Stock up on them, you have infinite sources for ingredients for both the healing and mana potions. Don't be afraid to use them if you don't have a healing spell available. It would be annoying to bring your journey from the last savepoint to an abrupt end just because you wouldn't spend a few coins for a potion. Basically this applies for all one-off items; they were put in the game so it's probably best to use them!

4) Have at least one person in your team who can crowd-control and another who can tank. Crowd control is much more effective than healing against normal enemies. If they don't even get to attack you it's better than you healing off the damage they do. I'd also wager it's more mana efficient.

EDIT: Blah, would've included another tip with very slight spoilers but couldn't edit the font to a small enough size that it would require copypaste to notepad for anyone to be able to read it. Blah.

Some things it took me a while to figure out:

1) Blank velum has no practical use, so don't fill your backpack full of the stuff.

2) Conserve your potions.

3) 90% of the equipment you'll be wielding or wearing by the end of the game is looted off boss monsters or is given to you as a quest reward; if you buy a moderately expensive weapon or piece of armour from a merchant, chances are it will be obsolete later.

4) Sten will occasionally make comments throughout the game. Be sure to talk to him about them.

Dexterity doesn´t affect damage for daggers in 1.0 (I think it´s fixed in 1.02 or 03, but not sure)

Stealing is bugged in 1.03, so don´t waste points on it
Edit according to MouseStalker: Yes, 1 point is useful though I personally didn´t bother with it.
(If you want to know why, see this; Minor spoiler there.)

Trap detecting is bugged for PC in 1.03 = don´t waste points on that either, use a companion rogue or (on lower difficulties) ignore traps.

Dexterity and strength don´t affect crossbow damage, making them useless

Don´t split your talents on 2 different weapon talents as warrior - choose one and max that.

(Highly personal opinion) Get the Better Sex scenes mod, the better Twohanded mod and the Realistic Look mod.
(all on Dragonagenexus)

As much as I like Tirigon (and I do), put one point in Stealing before you leave Ostagar. This is much more important than you would think. I do not care if you are a playing a goody two shoes paladin type. You will want to have one point in stealing. You will thank me.

Mousestalker - I have no idea what you are referring to. I played dwarven commoner, who had a point in stealing to begin with, and never used the skill - if there's some obvious and hugely beneficial use for it after Ostagar, I must have missed it. Is the opportunity to use it clear, or is it a case of just having to pickpocket a particular character?

Oh man, I wish I knew about the Tab key earlier on!

Second: I wasted lots of points on constitution in my earlier first game....(except for that one companion).

Save often, and also make enough hard saves!

Get the respec addon if you are on the pc..
