Things I wish I knew when I first started playing

As far as shapeshifter goes, while, yes, it is possible to create a good build and have fun with it, you must specialize toward just that build. If this is your thing, then so be it. For almost everyone else, all other mage builds, whether for arcane, blood, or healer, tend to offer more flexibility and options for the mage. They don't lock you into playing only one role or illiminate your ability to buff your party. And since the mage is designed to be the most versitale role out of all three classes, many who play mages tend not to want to be limited by the shapeshifter spec.

Just installed the game today and was wondering if the forum would be kind enough to share some non-spoiler insights as to things they realized in hindsight that would have been helpful from the beginning.
If you are a rogue, backstabs are fun. Do them.
My sister likes to play rogues, but never, ever backstabs. It drives me crazy.

basically it turns on/off your "everybody follow me and attack" team behavior.
nice to turn it off when you're scouting ahead or pulling a mob around a corner.
it's also handy if one of your melee characters is chasign someone into another mob of enemies.

As for what you can buy, Ward's superior drakeskin armor is concidered one of the best sets for rouges, but it'll cost you. If you have the bloodarmor chest piece from DLC, you might as well buy the rest of the armor at only 2 gold per piece. It's some of the best armor, especially considering that you can get it just out of Lothering at your camp. Great for your tank. For the mages, your selection is rather limited, but buying the Reaper Vestments in Denerim is probably your best bet. Too bad their 80 gold. Other than that, just shop around and see what each place has to offer. The inventories never loose items, and on occasion, they get more.

P.S. Buy every backpack that you can. They allow you to carry more junk, which means being able to collect more trash armor to sell.
Just remember your inventory limit is 125 no matter how many backpacks you buy.

Yes, and save often, quicksaving through quests and hard saving between them.

Alistair is a good romantic choice. But be sure to get to know Zevran. There is a lot more to him than what appears on the surface.
When coming up to an encounter (bandits for example), save. Then try out different conversation options if possible. More often than not there isn't a dialogue option and you will have to fight. But if there is a dialogue option, then there are usually one or two wonderful choices worth trying.

For your tank, base 38 str, ~60 dex and you'll be fine. Don't need points in constitution or willpower. You'll get more than enough bonuses from gear alone. Wade's Superior Dragonbone plate is also nice for the fatigue reduction and stamina regeneration.
Same as others have said, save often. Multiple save files suggested. Save after lengthy conversations, tough battles, or anything you don't want to replay if you die, have a power outage, or don't like the outcome of a particular situation. You may also need to reload if you run across any bugs that leave you "stuck" in an area or unable to access other areas/events. Warden's Keep comes to mind.

I use the H button along with contol all so that my party members are all good little kindergarteners holding hands. The H button worked especially well in the Deserted Building---I had each member walk seperately past the Trevinter Dogs and past that pesky dragon and around the grease slick.

H is also a good key for 'Holy batman, stop walking into that Fireball/Tempest/Storm of the Century!', as I discovered halfway into the game. Sigh.
Crushing Prison is a pretty good mage killer, except on bosses. Force Field is also good for that lone melee person in the middle of your AOE range, as well as buying time when the fight gets tough.
Use whoever you want. You can generally find good uses for all of them. Approval is also easily manipulated.
If you want to see all the dialogue for character development, however, it's a good idea to take approval rises slowly. Restrict yourself to one camp dialogue subject at a time and you'll still leave something for endgame. If you find yourself exhausting topics with Sten, take him on your quests and ask him about things he mentioned.
Don't ever pick the Violent soundset unless you like ladders.
Contrary to all common sense, constitution is totally a mage stat. You just need a fairly particular build for it. Useless for warriors.

QFT. Any other soundset is better.

I used Leliana in all parties for one reason and one reason only--- traps.
That's the main reason why I bring Leliana too, and she's easy to like from speaking to her.

When clicking multiple times on the voice type you get different examples of the voice. I definately wish I knew this while building my toon.

I mentioned before to get Force Field and Crushing Prison as fast as possible. Another good thing about this is if your tank is surrounded, cast Force Field on him and then cast Crushing Prison on him after. You will like the resultExperiment spell combos!
I discovered that spell combo quite by accident shortly after giving crushing prison to Morrigan. It was quite a suprise.

Same here hehe. The AI casted Force Field on Alistair cause he was surronded by like 5 darkspawns with my mage while I was controlling another PC and then, I switched controls to my mage and casted Crushing Prison on a Ogre next to Alistair, but I did it too quickly and targeted Alistair insead. Bang! Thanks to the codex entry, I knew what just happened
