Ah yes, I forgot to mention that, I couldn't believe it when I got to Denerim on my first playthrough, at the end of all the other quests, and found this amazing item. A 50% xp increase from reading books. Completely worth it with all the books and codex entries you'll find.

QFT. Any other soundset is better.

If your on PC there's a mod to get rid of that comment.

hi guys,

you could try using the tilde key [upper left side of KB] as your map key instead of the M key. Played Fallout [1, 2, 3] for too many games and that's what was used in those games, so I was used to it. It's convient to use if you use the TAB key alot.

getting money in the game is very hard so don't waste it. stealing lets you pickpocket everybody to help keep the coffers full, eventhough it's time consuming. don't know whether one level is good and several levels are better. Leliana has three levels of steal.

mages are probably the most powerful characters in the game. my group has three mages and Leliana. my warriors were getting slaughtered too many times - got fed up - switched to all mages and now WE slaughter. even wynne. the boys stay in camp with dog.

the tactics dropdowns are baffling. I let the pre-existing conditions mostly stand, except to add drink lyrium to the mages tactics.

the TAB key is the best way of finding things in the game. I travel with one finger on TAB one finger on W.

save often. someone dies. some action devastates you or your group. easy to reload and start again.

thanks.

When the world opens up go to mage tower first.

You find some quests through codex entries and not in the quest log so be sure to read what was on that scrap of paper you found.

Investigate Korcari wilds thoroughly, there are some nifty surprises to find. (TAB is your friend ;))

Companions also have special gifts that prompt additional dialogue and give more approvement points than ordinary gifts. You find out what they are by talking to them about their past but you don't find all of them by exploring, so be sure to check with merchants.

Some specialisations are unlocked by your companions and some by buying books from merchants. Some are also unlocked by finishing quests. You can only unlock blood mage if your character is a mage.

If you want a particular specialisation check how to unlock them in the wiki (not very spoilery) http://dragonage.wik...Specializations

Once you unlock them they are unlocked permanently so you can finish a quest to gain the specialisation and then reload and make other choices.

To above:

Pretty sure the order should be Red Ciffe -> Circle of Magi -> Brecilian forest -> Orzammar -> Frostback mountain -> Denerim.

The best set of armour can be found in Brecilian forest, but beware, it's not easy. You might want to leave that until after you have completed Orzammar.

Get the gift guide addon if you are on PC. There's no reason why you should waste your gifts on the wrong person.

Dog is more powerful than you think.

Like someone mentioned before, shapeshifter is useless.... unless if you get a certain shapeshifter mod, but that overpowers your character way too much.

The only infinite supply of elfroot is from the Dalish. However, should you choose not to side with them, you will lose it.

General:
- Get yourself the respec mod. Its a pain without it. Especially the NPCs
are all skilled awfully, with the single exception of Alistair who isnt
great, but OK. Also you might want to respec your main character.
- Best general purpose party is Shield Warrior, Dualweapon Rogue, 2x Mage.
- Learn Poison crafting 1 on all Rogues and Warriors to be able to use any poison on them.
- Same applies for everyone who wants to place traps; stage 1 works for the best traps already.
- Learn such crafting skills on characters you dont use, so the NPCs you actually use can have more important skills early.
- Learn Stealing 1 on your HC to get a special quest. Also, you can steal from people early on which gives a nice start.
- Do Mage Tower ASAP, its not only the most fun part of the game, but
it also gives attribute Bonusses to your HC which come in handy.
- Avoid leveling Con, except maybe on a Blood Mage.
- In Ostagar, get a backpack update when you arrive - and once you returned from the wilds, when the Smith get a new inventory. These updates are much cheaper than later ones and extremely helpful. Also get the recipe for the better health potions.
- Sell lowlevel runes, low quality potions etc. Only keep the good quality ones. You wont need them.

Mage:

- Strongest class is Mage.
- Only stat you really need to train on Mage is Int. Maybe Con on a Blood Mage. And Wil if you really want to have a lot of buffs up, but I would recommend against that.
- Always keep a huge stack of Mana potions ready. You only need the cheapest kind.
- Arcane Warrior is overpowered, but needs a careful spell selection to compensate for the awful attack of a Mage. Otherwise you'll just be well protected on an AW.
- Only Spirit Healer can rezz during battle. They also get a great Group Heal spell. People like AW and Blood Mage a lot, but Spirit Healer is a cool spec too.
- Shapeshifter sucks completely unless you get a fanmade mod for it.
- You cant learn Spirit Healer from Wynne, no matter how hard you try.

Rogue:
- Rogue HC gets the most xp (from stealing during battle) and is big fun if skilled correctly.
- Only Rogue can stealth, unlock, and disable traps.
- Get Lethality, Stealth 3 and maxed Stealing on a Rogue ASAP. Give Rogues a lot of Cun and rest in Dex.

Warrior:
- Templar Warriors get a special armor with +40% spell resistance, which can be used to create the perfect (i.e. completely spell resistant) tank.
- Dexterity is overpowerd when it comes to defense. Skill your Tank with max Dex and you'll rule.

You can go in any order you like. I used to go to Orzammar first just to get it out of the way. Then I realized how awesome Orzammar can be and started going to the Tower first instead.

Don't sell your Garnets! That's another thing I wish I knew before I began playing.

Takes less time and you only get like 100exp for it. So there's no real point in talking to the angry lady in the chantery.

This is an awesome thread.

Someone mentioned earlier that mage builds are tough because you can't undo bad spell choices. Additionally, sometimes you have to take spells you don't want to get to those you do. I hate that. One spell chain I wish I got into earlier is Glyphs. Repulsion is amazing, and the magic negation glyph will reduce almost any enemy mage to zero mana instantly, just like it says in the description.

Nobody mentioned traps yet. I think I will make a high cunning rogue next to see how traps work. Can you cast traps when stealthed (I don't consider that a spoiler)?

Yes. I used to put my party on hold and my rogue would go into stealth and sneak up to a group of baddies and set a bunch on traps and run back to the group.

Fold up a little piece of paper and use it to wedge your tab key down while exploring, but be sure to remove it when you are done playing.

I have a question... I'm a former 360 player and on the 360, there are 2 great things you can do:

1- skip a dialog (like when you die and die and die in a battle, it's nice to skip the intro dialog!) (by pressing Y)

2- Pause the game, even in cinematics, ANY time so you don't miss a thing if your baby is crying for exemple! (by pressing the big XBOX button)

Now that I play on the PC, I would really like to know what are the keys to press for both!!

Thanks :)

That Leliana is good at picking locks and that you had to switch to her to pick locks, would have been helpful at the beginning.

- For consoles, holding down the key (Left Trigger for Xbox, L2 for PS3) will bring up the radial menu, as most people know. It also highlights all items and doors in the general vicinity. Good for making sure you missed nothing. Basically the same as the tab key for PC.

- If you want the best armor possible for a Rouge, you are going to need 20 strength.

- If you are playing as a Human Warrior/Rouge, be sure to go to the Family Vault in your Origin story. Do not miss this.

- Castle Redcliffe has many many rooms/areas that are easily miss-able, including an armory which is full of loot. The town of Redcliffe has a Tavern, located on top of a hill. Hard to miss. It took me 5 play-throughs to even notice it.

hum, I think I tried the space bar to pause the game and it's not working. Again, as I have written in my previous post, I'm not talking about pausing the game while exploring or in combat, I'm talking about pausing the game when there is a conversation going on, a cinematic, etc.

Also, not like the trigger or bumper on the 360. That button is like the space bar.

Well if there is a way to pause during convo or cinematic in PC, I haven't found it during my...something like 10 plalythroughs and God knows how many deleted characters who got only half way.

Gear that boosts Stamina/gives Stamina regen, is the same as a boost to Mana/Mana regen. This fundamentally altered the way I play mages when I discovered it.

Survival let's you know where the enemy is, and fights are a lot easier when you can prepare yourself instead of bumping into a pack of enemies. This is a big advantage, especially in buildings, where you can exploit the environment to your advantage, e.g. by casting a Glyph of repulsion on a doorway, or by casting Inferno on enemies in a neighbouring room (this spell does not require line of sight!). Together with Coercion I find Survival the most useful skill.

The order should be whatever you want it to be. I tend to go to the circle of magi before redcliffe, as I like to get the stat bonuses from the fade early. And I usually leave Orzammar till last. I don't think there's any "right order", there's just personal preferences.

I think it depends on what companions you want.
