Survival let's you know where the enemy is, and fights are a lot easier when you can prepare yourself instead of bumping into a pack of enemies. This is a big advantage, especially in buildings, where you can exploit the environment to your advantage, e.g. by casting a Glyph of repulsion on a doorway, or by casting Inferno on enemies in a neighbouring room (this spell does not require line of sight!). Together with Coercion I find Survival the most useful skill.
