Nathaniel tells you his Grandfather Died as a Grey Warden... but om the codex it says

"During the occupation, Arl Tarleton Howe, Rendon Howe's father, threw
his lot in with the Orlesians. After several bitter battles with
rebels, the town of Harper's Ford--an outpost governed by Tarleton
Howe--fell to the Couslands of Highever. Tarleton hanged."

is this just something that was rewritten later? Was he consctipted instead of hanged? Actually weren't the grey wardens still exiled at the time?

Is it possible he's referring to his other grandfather?

the Howe bow would have to belong to his grandfather on his father's side. He also says his Grandfather's name is Padric Howe so I am wondering if this whole codex entry has been retconned.

Howe did say that the bow belonged to Padric and that he went to the Free Marches to become a G.W. and was never heard from again. It very well could be that Tarleton was a Great Grandfather?

Book Spoiler....

I remember from the book, "The Stolen Throne" that the Howes eventually joined the rebels to over throw the Orlesians.

Didn't Nathaniel say is father lied to him about his grandfather? Maybe the codex reflects this. Just a thought.

The statue is of one grandfather, the bow belongs to the other grandfather.. mother side and father. Reading through I just went though the cut scene the statue grandfather was Bryol Howle or something to the like. It definatly began with a B. When i get home I'll load up a save and get the subtitles for the cut scene.

Both named "Howe"  and both the father of Rendon?  Yeah, I don't think so. Reproduction does not work that way.

There is one way having two Howe grandfathers could work though:  if the extended Howe family was large enough, then Nate's mom could have been Rendon's cousin and still have had the surname Howe before getting married.  That's not implausible, as younger sons who didn't inherit the title would have gone off to found their own little branches of the family, so Nate's mom could have been a 4th, 5th or even higher-degree of cousin.  Even being a first cousin would work fine too, given how common such marriages were in the past (and still are in many parts of the world).  That said, I'd have to check the dialogue, as I'm not sure if Nate specifically said he was talking about Rendon's father or not.  I just sort of assumed he was.

Is there a procedure for getting an official comment on this? I would be curious.

Maybe Tarelton and Padric got married in Massachusetts? This would explain how Rendon has two fathers...

My guess is that when Padric vanished, possibly without leaving an heir, his brother or cousin Tarleton remarried his widow so as not to leave the Arldom without a head or a line of succession. Alternatively if Tarleton was already Arl he may have remarried his brother's widow to support her family. Oddly there is a third member of that generation who was Arl, great-uncle Byron (although we do not know if Padric was ever Arl). Perhaps the fact that Tarleton supported the Orlesians resulted in his brother or brothers being deposed and his being granted the title.

This is possible.

Also, is an ingame "source" listed in the codex entry in the OP? If it was written by an unreliable source ingame, it could have been a fabrication.

Just as a by-the-by, the missing statue from in front of the Chantry in Amaranthine was of Nate's uncle, not his grandfather. My guess is that either the conversation or the codex entry are simply one of those little contradictions that made their way into the game. (Personally, I lean toward the codex entry.) The grandfather in question does seem to have been Rendon's father, since Rendon has told Nate that his grandfather abandoned his family. Nate probably has the right of it when he muses that perhaps his grandfather died during the Joining.

According to the codex entry The Howes of Amaranthine:

"During the occupation, Arl Tarleton Howe, Rendon Howe's father, threw his lot in with the Orlesians. After several bitter battles with rebels, the town of Harper's Ford--an outpost governed by Tarleton Howe--fell to the Couslands of Highever. Tarleton hanged.

Rendon brought the Howe family over to the side of Maric Theirin and Loghain Mac Tir's rebellion."

So yes, we have a distinct contradiction. It might be worth noting that the codex entry is from a book by "Brother Bedine, Chantry scholar". Perhaps both the conversation and the codex are correct, and the bow is mislabeled?

Couldn't the names be the only contradiction necessarily? As I recall, the Grey Wardens were associated with the Orlesians, so it's entirely possible grandfather Howe was both a Grey Warden AND an Orlesian ally.

Is it impossible that the other grandfather, marrying into the Howe family so to speak, took the Howe name?

Also, is it that unreasonable to assume that a bow used by a member of a prominent family would aquire the family name, even if the person who first or last used it did not have that last name?
