I really just don't like how that would lump video games in with THINGS THAT ARE BAD!! like cigarettes and alcohol and decongestants (don't get me started on the lack of ability to treat my family's allergies)
You know SarEnyaDor, if your family's allergies are persistent and moderate-severe, they could probably be placed on intranasal corticosteroids for improved long term control. Maybe you should talk to the doctor next time they're in for a check up about it.

@Marbatico; yeah, some people do slip through the net. Almost every time I've tried to buy age restricted materials on my own (alcohol at gigs etc), I've been ID'd. I went to a gig with a friend once, and he didn't get ID'd for beer despite being a year younger than me. I got ID'd for a pint of cola, and I'm not joking.
the convenience store in New Orleans ID'd me and one other guy, i was 24 and he was 25. three other guys who were with us, all 20, didn't get ID'd. interestingly enough, it was the only time i was ID'd down there... the bars and parties didn't bother.

how exactly would this be effective? i don't know about countries other than Canada and the US, but isn't the required age to get a driver's license typically 16?

The State is not your parent and shouldn't try to play that role. The parents are the ones who should be deciding what their kids can play and can't play. I'd rather not continue down the road of the Nanny State.

That's what, roughly 17 years old? A 5 year difference for a poor sex scene? Wow, that's bad.crysischaos wrote...
ME1 and ME2 are both M over here
Ratings tend not to make a lot of sense, anyways. To buy or view porn in the UK you have to be 18, but the age of consent is 16. So, does that mean you have to close your eyes until you're 18?

Actually, a driver's license # might work. In my home state they put you in groups and your license expires at different rates based on those age groups. You also get different colors with them as well. Once you hit 21, you get a green border for your license...probably because you're legal for everything that you can be by then. If they have a color system, it's probably built into the numbering system too.
However, the DMV allowing random stores to access the numbers to verify, not likely. That sounds like one more system to have to spend money on to maintain.

There is more to it than the sex scene. Language, violence, mature themes, grey morality choices. It's funny when people think of ratings they automatically think of sexual content but machine gunning people is okay. curious world we live in.OnlyShallow89 wrote...

And what about people who are of age but without a driver's license for whatever reason? And what's stopping little Billy from going into Dad's wallet or Mom's purse to nab the number real quick. It wouldn't be like using their credit card numbers, either, because the license # is for verification purposes only. Mom and Dad won't catch ya.
Whatever the case, kids will always find a way to get their MA games. Any law, short of one violating basic human rights, will not stop this. Plus, kids aren't affected by the violence.. they're effected by spending too much time playing games with no breaks and never engaging in real social acitivites.

No, not at all. It is (in the UK at least) the retailer's job to check the age of the customer if they suspect they are underage. Whether they're buying alcohol, a DVD, cigarettes, porn, gaming magazines (ones with DVDs are BBFC rated), games, a lottery ticket knives or anything else restricted.Apophis2412 wrote...

The important part ( IMHO) was that if it passes retailers will be fined $1000 per game sold, that could very well lead to retailers not wanting to carry certain games anymore to curtail the possibility of mistakes happening which would limit our ability to pick and choose where we buy games from if no one wants to risk carrying them. No competition leads to higher game prices etc etc.
Just something to watch.
Wiat a minute! The game company gets fined because a minor bought one of their games!?
Shouldn't the parents be fined in this case?
So, say you're 16 and you go into a store alone and pick up MW2 and go to the cashier with it. How is your parent responsible for this transaction at all? If the till assistant thinks you're underage then they can and will ask for ID to verify your age.
It's just an extension of the store's ability to refuse service.
Same in the US I have noticed, they aren't too keen on the parents buying it for them if they get refused either.

It's the same in Spain, I'm glad for it.

This result seems highly unlikely to me because it is exactly the same system under which alcohol is currently sold. Alcohol is legally available only to customers over a certain age and selling to anyone below that age results in a heavy fine. And yet alcohol is available damn near everywhere in the US. If there is a profit to be made selling the product, retailers have already proven they are willing to verify age to continue to selling it. The stores which are offended by products with graphic content, such as Walmart in some cases, have already self censored and refused to carry the offending titles without any legislative interference. I don't see this law changing anything except giving a handful of helicopter moms less to cry about.

If so, you must live in Paradise....
Over here in Germany many games are already banned. Even DAO may only be sold to persons above 18.

We don't have any real government regulation on video game sales for the most part. Its generally left up to retailers to enforce the ESRB's rating system.Tirigon wrote...
So, does that mean up to now EVERYONE can buy EVERY game in the US?
