A small fleet of Reapers descends unto a planet, a few starships of unknown design try to get away while a few others attempt to cover their escape. All are destroyed, swift and efficient.
The Reapers hover above cities. Husks, scions and walking bugs herd the humanoid survivors into the gaping maws of the metal squids.
Text:
"50,000 years ago the Reapers wiped out the Prothean civilisation like countless others before them."
Show another planet, very similar, and the SR-2 Normandy approaching.
"The year is 2189, and the Reapers are returning.
Will the cycle of extinction continue?
That depends on you, Commander Shepard!"

I imagine it would have something along the lines of the council building their own mass relays or at least a small collection of them, allowing non reaper access to some parts of the galaxy.
I also think there is one un-accounted for Reaper ship, potentially indoctrinating some Batarian's who modify a mass relay to accept small pulses from the Reapers outer galaxy relay. So instead of massive amounts of Reapers coming at once, one or two at a time can come into the galaxy without the use of the citadel.
The small group of Reapers begin to assault and fortify surrounding systems before a retaliatory strike can be organised (being in the terminus systems, the council can't just send in a fleet. You know, politics.)
Meanwhile Shep faces the council / or TIM (depending on ending) to discus what is happening in the Terminus systems. Off Shep goes to investigate (potentially getting damaged face and needing re-construction), and on discovery of Reapers begins the recruitment drive for soldiers, ships and munitions. Alliance fleet / Council fleet faces Reapers directly in their first skirmish. Depending on previous choices, this could be a small victory or loss, regardless the galaxy now knows about the Reapers. Etc Etc Etc

But am I the only one who thinks ME3 and ME2 may not have a large gap between them? Like, maybe just a few months? Because if you remember, at the very end of ME2, right before the credits start rolling, there was a brief cutscene with alien ships (obviously Reapers) heading toward the Milky Way. I don't imagine it would take them too long to reach the galaxy and begin the alleged cycle of extinction. So, from my own personal point of view, I think ME2 and ME3 will be separated by just months, or a single year at most.

That thought was my original idea as well. However even at their top speed, it would take years to reach the galaxy. They were viewing it from a massively long way out. To be able to see the galaxy in one screen like that, they would almost be the length of the galaxy away. If they were able to travel that distance in a few months. Mass Relay's would be redundant to the Reapers, so it wouldn't require the activation of the citadel as a relay (Like the original ME1)
With that said though, they all woke up at one time so maybe there is something else going on allowing them to reach the system sooner. Maybe someone or something was already up to something before ME2.
However, almost everything is speculation at this stage. <_< I HATE WAITING!

That's right. The Galaxy would still look massive even from awesome distances, but you never know what kind of technology the Reapers possess.Icinix wrote...

And yes, I HATE waiting, too! BioWare better release that damn teaser before I go insane! lol

[Variant 1: you activated Legion]
Miranda walks into the AI core and talks to Legion about some kind of "agreement". Legion says that they have reached a consensus and gives something to Miranda. She then goes to the comm room and transmits whatever she recieved to TIM.
[Variant 2: you didn't activate Legion]
You're shown a Cerberus lab where Legion is being studied. A scientist sends a report to TIM with attached data file (extracted from Legion). Cue to a Cerberus shuttle (it looks more advanced than a Kodiak) recieving a commando team and departing.
[Scene 2]
Shepard and two team members take a shuttle down to some seemingly abandoned installation on a planet. You have control now and you have to search the place. Later you recieve a warning about several ships exiting FTL and landing near your position. You now have to fight your way out through a large merc force. After some time of fighting an increasingly large number of enemies one of your team members is down (as in 'won't survive without help') and you are pinned down. Then you hear from the merc's radio transmissions that somebody else is attacking them. And then you're faced with a Cerberus commando team lead by... Saren. *insert Saren track here*

A) It needs to be dramatic.
It was done creatively in ME2. So ME3? Notta damn clue.

I feel your pain, greatest game of all time right there! D:Icinix wrote...
Years I've been waiting for a sequel to this.
YEARS!
Or even another game in the genre which isn't overly complicated or an MMO.
Damn stupid game companies...
(Grumbles and sulks away)
I mean, the mods and epic multiplayer kept me going for a while, but now it's nothing but cruel memories and thoughts of what could have been...
Bought it the day it came out, expecting a nice sequel to the fairly good Starlancer, the result however, blew my f*cking mind.
Why is it that the two greatest games of all time (in my opinion, ofcourse), get promised a sequel, which is then cancelled without proper reason?! (Second one is Warzone 2100, in case you're wondering)
There keep coming games "like it", but every time I play one of those, I'm simply underwhelmed, and get reminded of how cruel fate can truly be.

I'm curious to see how face creation will be handled -- if at all -- for imported Shepard's in ME3. Obviously, they're not going to kill Shepard off again just so you can recreate his face.Vicious wrote...
The obvious thing is that
A) It needs to be dramatic.Shepard needs to have his helmet on. [so you can remake his face and class]
It was done creatively in ME2. So ME3? Notta damn clue.
Not trying to go off-topic in my own thread, but just thought I'd toss that in, as it's something I've actually been wondering about.
