Title speaks for itself, who makes up your party. For my City elf warrior i have Allistar, Wynne and Liliana. I have Allistar to help in close quarters combat, Wynne on healing and using glyphs when me and Allistar get overwhelmed and Leliana plinking away at their health from afar.
For my Dalish rogue I have dog, Morrigan and sten (im playing a bad guy as hims so having characters that enjoy ruthless actions is a must)
Whos your party and why

Sten for the muscle. Alistair for the wit. Morrigan for the sass.

Male - Arcane Warrior / Blood Mage (PC)
Damager and Controller
Morrigan - Shapeshifter / Spirit Healer
Controller and Healer
Alistair - Templar
Tank
Leliana - Bard
Melee rogue, picking locks, soaking some damage
Not really an "ideal" party which is reflected by the fact that I have to toggle down from Hard on all the really tough fights in the game like the Revenants and High Dragon. But it works pretty well now that my characters have matured. Blood Wound + Sleep / Cone of Cold is a vicious crowd control combo. Not to mention when I feel like it, I can cover HUGE areas in magical hellfire between Morrigan's Blizzard and my character's Inferno and Tempest. Very useful for driving hordes of Darkspawn in the direction I want them to go.

Actual I originally had my party as full warriors (Allistar, Sten and dog) though the first quest i did was Redcliff and that Revnent made me rethink my party haha. Also i went for health potions like made (still do actually)

Alistair for tanking and romance, my dog for unconditional love and ripping the throats out of darkspawn. My human noble rogue for ranger summons and longbow. Wynne because she keeps the rest of us alive, and I do enjoy her character even if she's not quite as amusing as Morrigan.

Right now, I find it's absolutely necessary to have Wynne, Leliana and Oghren together, because it hella funny hearing Oghren's party banter as he hits on the two ladies. Hilarious.
Works out balance wise, too, since my PC is sword&board. So I have a Tank (PC), damager (Oghren), crit-hitter (Leliana), and the all-important healer (Wynne).

I usually go Alistair, Leliana, Morrigan and me, a human warrior, because I enjoy their banter and characters but sometimes I swap Alistair for zeveran.
Maybe next time i'll have dog, me, wynne and sten/ oghren.

I actually drop Zevran in there sometimes with Leliana for the intresting sex question he asks her.

Funny enough Alistair stands in for me, to romance my too-cute dwarf lass to the left.
He's sword and board for tanking, while Grozlyn is all about the big two-handed beatstick.
Morrigan because I love her snarky comments and magic oomph,
Lelianna to shoot what is moving and unlock what isn't.
Wynne gets honorable mention and is my floater, switching for any of the others as needed.
I WANT to use Shale more for the banter.

I'm using:
Main - Mage, Primalist / direct and aoe damage spam build with backup heal no specialization yet. don't like any of them.
Alistair - Tank. Wish I had another tank choice, cause keeping him happy is really driving me nuts.
Morigan - Hybrid, has dps, cc, and healing. Focusing almost all talents after lvl 8 on healing, planning to give spirit healer
Zevram - Rogue dps.
I'm really surprised to hear so many people using leliana. When I used her I was totally underwhelmed by her damage, and archery in general. When I got zevram and tried him out I was ASTONISHED by his damage. He can't keep up with my mage of course, but it was drastically higher than leliana.
I love the game generally, but I find the classes pretty unbalanced. Mages feel much more powerful to me.

In my group, Lelianna puts out consistant, reliable damage. She hits earlier and more often than any of the rest of us, even Morrigan. Sure, she doesn't do the 100+ damage hits my main does, but at the end of the fight she's hit X number of targets Y times for 22-23 damage a hit.
It's not the 'burst' damage Zevran can do, but far more valuable to me. Between pinning and shattering shots disrupting the baddies, she keeps their heads down while I rush in with the two-hander o' doom.

Yeah, she was not spectacular in battle. However, after finding a certain powerful dagger (can't remember the name offhand), and putting some runes on it, she is good at disabling enemies. It works well putting her behind a boss as he's focused on my tank. Now I'm pumping her ranger abilities, to see if the summons will be useful. I've mostly ignored her archery.Sargon16 wrote...

I have yet to use Zevran, so I have no comparison.

Yeah I use my mains massive array of spells, and morrigan, at the start of fights to establish CC while alistair and zev run in. Same idea, just cc'ing with a different class.
Mages just feel so powerful. I can often kill 2 normal opponants... before the enemey melee and alistair meet in the middle of the battlefield. Sometimes even yellow elites die within the span of maybe 10 seconds (game time, not nonstop pause key time).
Here's a story about mages. My 2nd try on the High Dragon, pc normal mode. Within 20 seconds alistair gets picked up and ripped in half. Like I blinked, and he was dead. I figure its over, but hey I may as well practice. High Dragon aggros my mage. Rock Armor, Arcane Shield, lesser warmth balm. 30 seconds after that Zevram dies to some aoe. .... 30 Minutes later, Morigan and my mage kill the high dragon, mage tanked the whole thing. Ok I was slamming the pause key practically every second of combat, used well over 30 health poultices, including all my good ones, and my entire stockpile of Lyrium potions, about 20.
Thing is, having done it once, I realized a dozen things I did wrong, and could beat the fight far easier now. One example, realizing that normal spells resist like crazy... but staff doesn't seem to ever miss. I used staff alone for the last 30%.
Sorry for derail lol, got carried away.
I suppose I should give archery another chance though, maybe after I learn more how to put the talents. The downside of Zevram is he has none of the utility stuff, and a single talent in open locks isn't producing good results, not with his cunning anyways, 15% success rate.
