Soooo heh, as I wait for my new headphones to arrive (I had to go sit on my old pair >.>) I'm just curious if there is a particular class that compliments a squad with Ashley & Kaidan (yeah I've read all the hate he gets but I like rollin' with my Marines, what can I say)?  I know any class combo is doable on lower difficulties (I'm playing on normal just to play through and import to ME2)  but I was just curious if there were any in particular that would round out this party comp.

Tried googling an answer but all I get are links to the Virmire part of the game.

Also, for whatever it's worth, I've been playing a Vanguard lately but I notice I ignore most of his biotics (save for barrier) and mostly spend my time shooting people in the face, feels like I'm just wasting half of a class here. Though I'm not much one for micro-managing abilities in general.

I did a playthrough with Kaiden and Ashley where Shepard was an infiltrator with a throw bonus talent. It worked great, and felt very balanced.

I'm like you; I don't rely on the biotic powers much. I enjoy using the sniper rifle as my main weapon, my pistol to get the swarming enemies like varren and husks, and tech powers. For me, biotic powers are mainly to get me out of jams, and the throw bonus talent works well for that. I know a lot of people prefer lift, but I think it's glitchy (I've had too many enemies get lifted into ceilings and other obstacles so that they can't be killed).

Yeah I was thinking of an Infiltrator, actually. One question I do have: how often do situations for sniping come up throughout the game?  The main reason I decided to try out a shotgun Vanguard was because it seemed like there were a lot of areas where I was just getting bum rushed by enemies and forced to fight them all up close. It's especially annoying in areas like that freighter with all the biotic terrorists (really wish I had a camera zoom for that part).

I played an Infiltrator in the first game. Takes awhile before the sniper rifle will be any use to you, but I liked it. For swarming enemies, you have the pistol to fall back on: using master marksmen with the pistol is a ridiculous amount of a damage that I'm pretty sure no other weapon can match. Unrealistic, yes.

However, I am a heavy tech power user. I live and breathe a bombardment of overload, sabotage, and damping. This is why the squad combo I used most was Garrus and Kaidan or Garrus and Tali. I used Kaidan more than Tali because he has the ever critical throw and neural shock talents. Seriously, no other squadmate works better against Krogan than Kaidan.

Okay, that all said, I don't see any problem with using just Ashley and Kaidan with any squad combo. If you can fight your way through any battle as a soldier, so can Ashley. If you don't have the ability to use decryption and electronics, Kaidan's got you covered.

I use the sniper rifle on almost everything. If you send your squadmates ahead of you, the enemies will generally stay in rifle range. I even use it on husks and creepers until they start to get close. I even use it on hopper geth. Rachni and varren are the main enemies I'd recommend never using it on. That, and the boss fight with Saren in the Citadel.

Regarding Ashley, she's not nearly as good with the sniper rifle as I am, so I keep her on the assault rifle most of the time.

I used a sniper rifle infiltrator with both kaiden and kaiden. I put an ammo mod that increased my damage by 30 percent (?) and some other added bonus at the cost of a 300 percent overheat. So it acted like my widow in ME2, one shot and overheat, cool down, then repeat. did a ton of damage. I also added damage bonus in the other two slots with overheat increase. it was pretty cool, in close range I would use it like a shotgun.

If you're in it for the weapon use and not the powers, go commando soldier. You'll have better damage output and will be able to assassinate more often, by using adrenaline burst. Don't get me wrong, I love playing an infiltrator, but unless you're using your tech skills what's the point?

But as far as what class goes best with a Ash/Kaiden combo, whatever you feel like playing.  With just those two you have the essentials covered.

The odd thing is, on my squadmates, I use their biotic/tech powers liberally. For some reason, I just don't use them when I have them, heh.

Anyway, yeah, like you said... I ended up going soldier and will be going commando when I can. I figure if I'm going to be stuck with all those weapons regardless of what class I choose, might as well get a use out of as many of them as I can heh.

Edit: ahh one other quick question while I'm here: do items scale at all with your level or do they only scale depending on the level of the area you're in? I noticed I could buy IV weapons at a vendor but off mobs/in containers I was still only finding I-III stuff even at level 16-18.

Items will scale with your level, regardless of where you are. Vendors do have a certain amount of set inventory. They will also sometimes have some random stuff that is better than what you're finding.

Once you get to a million credits, you can grab some spectre vii guns from the Normandy quartermaster and the C-Sec guy. These are the best guns you'll see for quite a while. Note that it only requires the rich achievement, so on your subsequent passes, regardless of character, they are available right after Eden prime, even if you can't afford them.
