I'd always imagined Highever being not too big, 5000 - 10.000 inhabitants would be my guess.

I quickly looked up some data about Erfurt (capital city of Thuringia) in the German wikipedia and it is stated that it had about 20.000 in the 14th century. Other even larger cities were Magdeburg (30.000) or Cologne (50.000).

Edit: Well, since Ferelden is based on England or Scottland maybe we should look up examples from there? ^^

Everyone who's played a human noble is quite familiar with Castle Cousland

The oldest and innermost keep of castle cousland, anyway. ;)

I like to pretend it's a stupidly huge concentric castle that we barely got to see anything of. :P

Oooh, interesting.  About what I was thinking, though despite what we see in the game, I would have thought Redcliffe to be much, much bigger.

Wow.  I would have thought Redcliffe was much bigger than Lothering and about the same size as Gwaren.

I remember reading some where that Redcliffe was a very small town, but it has a great deal of strategic importance.

Redcliffe is a fortress sitting on one of the only landroutes into Ferelden. The only other route is to trek through the mountains. That makes it not only crucial to the defence (or conquest of Ferelden), it also makes it ideally placed as a transit point for trade and commerce.

I realize it's from a semi-official source, but a population of 1,000,000 for Ferelden sounds a bit high. I've heard the Dragon Age universe characterized as low-medieval a few times, so based on that we're probably looking at the 12th-13th centuries at the latest? Then again this is a fantasy game inspired by low-medieval England, not based on it so it's kind of hard to tell. 20,000 does sound about right for Highever though.

According to Wikipedia (dubious source, I know), this is London between 1000 and 1700:
1000 — 5–10,0001100 — 10–20,0001300 — 50–100,0001350 — 25–50,0001500 — 50–75,0001600 — 200,0001650 — 350,0001700 — 550,000Ferelden probably fits somewhere between 1100-1350 would be my guess.

Duncans memorial should be placed there. It just needs to be.

For comparison, I'd also be interested to see the population of the other Arlings - Amaranthine, West Hills & South Reach. I'd think Redcliffe must be by far the smallest of them though...

Redcliffe Village is small population wise, but I wager that around that area is farmland with more families. The people there have to make a living, and not everyone can be a soldier or a merchant or some sort. Ferelden strikes me as being largely agrarian, with many people living on farms/homesteads or loose collectives. Remember Daveth comes from a small village, so tiny that it's not even on a map? Something like that.
