I know its early, but just wondering if anyone knows how much i need to be effective?

SO few skill point to spend :(

I guess its good to have everything a little but out of reach so the replayability is there to try new stuff :)

I always gun for max, as soon as I possibly can.

So i guess you can basically max out only 1 other skill :(

My advice: Don't worry about how much you put into one thing or another. Don't worry about what you do, if you're going to mess up a character or something. There is real enjoyment in making a choice in this game and sticking to it. The game is built around choices coming to fruition, and I think this can be extended to all areas of the game.

Plus, it gives you something to shoot for on a second or fourth playthrough.

Well don't worry about combat tactics if you play your main character most of the time. He will only need a lot of tactic slots if you don't use him frequently. Coercion and combat training are the most important skills for the player character imo. I let the others handle the rest of the skills.

Agreed. And I think your PC picks up tactic slots as he/she levels up anyway. Don't bother with combat tactics, even if you start out as a class that has a rank in it.

i will preface this statement that I am an achievement hound. You may need to bump this up to get certain achievements.

Also, I believe that your ability to influence affects the outcome of certain key points in the game - that is, if you can't convince someone otherwise, then there is only one outcome.

I would suggest max it.

Since your main character is the one that does the "negotiating", it make sense to max it.

Let other people get the herbalism, pick-pocket, poison making skill.

Coercion is the first thing I raise on my PC. It is the unique skill for PCs. Most of the other skills - be it poison, trap, survival, etc. can be raised on NPCs for nearly the same effectiveness. Cocercion cannot.

In order of importance, I would say:

1. Coercion.
2. Combat Training.
3. Survival

After that, whatever you want.

For party members:

1.Combat Training
2.Combat Tactics
3.Crafting skill

You should be able to max two of those and then bring the other one up to a decent level long before the game is over if you're a completionist.
