Also, I gave up on Energy Drain and started using the geth shield for defense.  Anyone else use a defensive bonus power on an engineer?

I wouldn't use a defensive power on any class as i think it's a total waste of the bouns power slot because after you get 3 Medi-Gel upgrades which can be done 3 missions into the game it restores full health/shields & has a really low cooldown.
Yeah i know their a limited resource but you find them everywhere anyway so for me Medi-Gel>Geth Shield;)

Actually mechs have been walking backwards towards me with a drone on them as fast or faster than they would advance without a drone on them. They aren't facing me, but still, I hate getting pushed back by mechs.

I do. Just one point in geth sheild is enough in case I get caught with my pants down. I usually roll with jacob and miranda with my engineer. Jacob for his incindiary ammo and pull, miranda for her warp to detonate the pull, squad bonus and extra overload. A lot of people like the explosive drone, but I generally like the attack drone better. The attack drone kinda works on a Praetorian too. I mean kinda because while it will move generally toward ya, every time your attack drone shoots, the Praetorian will turn around and attack it and with suprising little success. It buys you more time to shoot or get to your next cover location.

I really do love the engineer. It was the last class I played but ended up being tied for my favorite with the soldier.

Yeah, I like having one point in GSB.  I find it more useful than throwing a point in Hack.

My current Engineer build looks like this...
Overload - 10/area
Incinerate - 10/area
Drone - 10/explosive, sometimes assault.  I am still experimenting with it.
Cryo - 10/area
Tech Mastery - 10/Operative
Hack - 0
GSB - 1

Engineer is a great class! I know I was surprised by how good it was. On my list I'd put it above soldier and adept.

While were on that subject...I really want a dialogue option to ask Miranda what part of her genetic engineering tells her to stand on cover instead of behind it.

Engineers absolutely abuse YMIR Mechs with the combat drone haha.

I can solo the two YMIRs in Garrus' mission or that one N7 mission with an engy.  It's hilarious as they become completely oblivious to everything else except the little drone.

Only the praetorian seems to partially ignore it.

Meh, I thought engineers were somewhere below average at least on the harder difficulties. Sure you can drone spam a YMR until their dead, but it takes a really long time. The engineer can decimate armors, shields, and barriers (with reave), but the cd on those powers seems to make them less efficient than other classes. At that to the fact that they have little to no killing power, and some enemies take a long time to kill. So far, I think the infiltrator has the most killing potential since the widow essentially becomes a heavy weapon with lots of ammo lying around. That would be closely followed by the vanguard, provided you don't die a lot.

Actually I beat the game the fastest playing an engineer, and when I went up a difficulty level no less.  That whole defensive power thing lasted like 3 missions til I just put Energy Drain back on.

I know Cerberus basic training should really have a part about staying in cover. Jacob and Miranda synergize well except when they're both dead on boxes.

It's best when she hops up on the cover you're hiding behind and you can't aim because her hexagon covered, jello-y ass is taking up the screen.

We think alike
Jacob, MIranda and Garrus, they all think they can catch missles with their faces

Playing other classes now, I can safely say that I miss the Engineer's ability to completely tie up one enemy for basically as long as I want. Like if I want to clear a room and tie up a heavy mech over in its corner, I can. Infiltrators come closest to that since you basically get free time to change spots, but playing as an Adept is completely different in this regard. I can't choose what order people come at me, and really that's why I liked an engineer.

Is it true that you get access to special dialogue with the engineer? I haven't played one yet and I was just wondering.

Not that I noticed, but I just skip through everything now since I've seen it before.

Where did you hear that? It doesn't sound right to me.

No. There are no class-specific dialog options. The Engineer does, however, get a very nice discount on research project cost. I believe it maxes at 25%

Before the game came out on the old forums it was stated that engineers were going to get specific dialogue. It might have been something that they wanted to do but, couldn't do.
