Ok... since you have legit Steam version (which uses regular game keys, i. e. they are not tied to Steam platform) you can download or copy your friend's ME disc and use your key to install the game. AFAIK this falls under Fair Use category if you bought the game and did not bypass copy protection. You can find your game key in Steam game menu or ME configuration program under 'Game' tab.

Depending on what OS you're using you'll have to figure this out:
CLICK:
Control panel>
Administrative tools or System & Security
Event Viewer
Click on Application Logs or System
Look for something with a big red X or big red ! with ERROR in the same line
In the box under you'll see something when you find Masseffect that looks something like this:
Faulting Module or Faulting Application C:\\Program Files\\Bioware\\Mass Effect\\Masseffect.exe
Caused: General Protection Fault in address (whole pile of garbility ******)
Copy all of the stuff in that underbox and post it here. There should be a "copy" button that you can just press.

Could be a couple of things, you're running out of vram(video memory), you didn't list your video card so can't be sure. Anything under 500mb is going to have issues, it could also be an SLI issue. If you have SLI, ensure that it's set to single card mode.T-Dog60 wrote...
I'm getting the GPF and this is the text from the actual message, since the message you were talking about won't show up in the event viewer, does this help?

Mass Effect1 used the UT3 engine, while Mass Effect 2 uses an upgraded version that may be referred to as 3.5 instead of plain Vanilla 3.
Onboard anything at all is going to choke on either of the Mass Effect games.

Whoa! That seems disproportionately excessive / drastic for curing a game problem, unless anything else was also affected that added up with the inconvenience of not being able to play a game . .rooshandark8 wrote...

I'm running a Sapphire Radeon 5870 in Windows 7 and I get the General Protection Fault error as well...Specifically, I get it in the first mission, On Eden Prime, At the start, As soon as I sprint for more than about 3-5 seconds. I don't get past the swamp with the floationg gas thingies.
Couple that with a "Mass Effect Configuration Utility has stopped responding" EVERY TIME I TRY TO RUN IT and Mass Effect 1 is COMPLETELY unplayable for me.
Tried compatibility mode in both the config util and the game itself, Nadda.
Tried running both the config util and the game as administrator, Nadda.
Tried running both the config util and the game in compatibility mode as administrator, Nadda.
Tried rolling back the video drivers to the earliest usable with my card ala Catalyst 10.3, Nadda.
Tried updating Mass Effect to 1.02, Nadda.
Tried uninstalling Windows, Wiping the hard drive and reinstalling, Nadda.
Though it doesn't need to be said, Tried uninstalling the game and reinstalling, Nadda.
Tried overclocking my GPU to ramp up the 2D speed, Nadda.
The ONLY thing I can think of is that this relates to a "too new" version of DirectX and the game doesn't know what the hell to do with it or how to use it, Making this game, Effectively, Obsolete and redundant.

My specs are:
Windows XP Home Service Pack 3
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3.0 GHz
3.25 GB of DDR2 RAM
Radeon 5670HD 1024MB of DDR5 GRAM, driver version 8.780.0.0, driver date 09/10/2010
Sound Adapter Realtek HD, driver version 5.10.0.6215, driver date 10/5/2010
I have the physical disk
The problem seems to happen just randomly (actually most of the time in in the middle of a conversation with an NPC and the conversation wheel has just popped up) and kick me out of the game, the message I'm getting is:
Rendering thread exception:
General protection fault!
History: Address=0x1159ee15(filename not found)
Address=0x317e7c80(filename not found)
RaiseException() Address=0x7c812afb(file name not found)
CxxThrowException() Address=0x78158e89(filename not found)
GMatrix2D::Swap() Address=0x10da7e83(filename not found)
Address=0xe8781b4c(filename not found)
Any ideas or way to fix this would be very helpful.
