Going from a desolate city to a desolate desert doesn't really feel like an improvement. I mean, I realize it's a post-apocalyptic setting, but can't we get some color occasionally? Eh, whatever, despite all this, FO3 was good, so hopefully this will be too.

I heard that in the Fallout universe, Las Vegas was not struck by a nuclear attack during the nuclear war and thus the city remains in tact.
I can't tell from these screen shots but I don't think New Vegas is going to be quite as post-apocalyptic as Fallout 3.

Game looks good.  2010 is going to be a good year for Obsidian.

They might use some bright colours in the Casino, but they are keeping the main part of New Vegas under close wraps for the momment. Just have to wait & see. Ghoul stripers & or dancers??? Sight for sore eyes I'm sure.

http://fallout.wikia...wiki/Hoover_Dam should answer your question.

Yeah, I'll be interested to see the direction they take the game in. While I don't really understand the Fallout chronology, it feels like FO3 took place in a world that had a 50s sort of vibe and in the 50s, Vegas wasn't nearly the spectacle it is today. Because they were less effected by the nuclear war, are we going to see them having had built up some of that classic Vegas charm, or will they take it in a completely different direction and develop it into a fundamentalist Mormon compound with three-headed donkeys and gatling gun-wielding sheep people? We shall see.

Ah, I thought they were for some reason there from before the war.

The nuclear disaster in Fallout took place in 2077 but for some reason the culture in Fallout remained 50s esque.

I'm optimistic about this game but I do hope the game doesn't become overly-reliant on community mods which is a problem I have with Bethesda games. This is Obsidian though so I'm hoping the game will be good right out of the box.

Back when I first played through FO3 we didn't have any mods and we liked it, we loved it! But yeah, the modders always do a lot to improve Bethesda games. I'd like to feel confident about Obsidian developing New Vegas as its comprised of a lot of the guys from Black Isle, but they don't exactly have a great track record. KotOR II had a lot of potential, but was left so heavily unfinished (though that is largely due to a restrictive development schedule), aside from that, all they've made is NWN2 and its expansions. NWN2 had a lot of issues when it was first released and Storm of Zehir was just incredibly dull. The only real exception to their string of iffy games was Mask of the Betrayer, but I had some issues with that as well.

That's not to say they don't make good games, but they usually come with some pretty notable flaws.

The Fallout universe is a fictitious universe (of course) which is speculative in that it's possibly what would happen if we didn't invent the microchip and so forth. Everything is similar to how it was in the 30s-50s in that valves are used (if you watch the FO3 trailer with the radio, that's a valve radio). I'm not sure why the slightly art deco style stayed, but as a Brit I find it quite "American". You don't see the 50s-esque cars over here, for example.

New Vegas is back on the West Coast of the USA, which is where Fallout 1 (and I think FO2) took place. Plus Obsidian are making it, and most of their key employees (and some others, I'd wager) are responsible for the most influential RPGs of the 1990s and early 2000s. You've got some of the original Fallout team on New Vegas, for example.

This game is, if ZeniMax/Bethesda don't interfere much, going to blow Fallout 3 out of the water. Obsidian have shown through NWN2 and KotOR2 that they are incredibly talented devs with a lot of passion, and they have this chance to get their name up in the echelons of great developers and they won't let it slip. I can guarantee you that :)

It's designed with the xbox360 as the lead platform, not expecting much.

Might as well give up on gaming then as just about every game from now on is going to be console based.

Unless you intend to just play strategy games and MMORPGs.

Don't complain about it though, PC gamers brought it on themselves.

As long as it's moddable like the last fallout was for the pc, i doubt they could eff it up so bad just because it's a console port...

I'm afraid you're about a decade or so late in predicting the death of PC gaming. If the doomsayers are to be believed, PC gaming has already died more times than anything probably should, but I digress.

Oh man, nice. Honestly I'm excited most of all about the little things that will be here that were absent from FO3 (more dialog based on stats, karma/reputation separate, etc)...

I think a lot of console based games translate well on the PC. Sure games would look better if more were optimized for modern day PC horsepower but I'm content enough with my PC version of console games like Mass Effect 2.

It is a bit frustrating that I have one of the most powerful home computers on the planet and I can't even take full advantage of the resources but I can't blame developers for not wanting to cater to a demographic that views everything as freeware.

Actually, 10 years ago people were predicting that it was going to be consoles that would die off in favor of PC gaming.
I remember Next Generation magazine had a cover issue story titled "consoles under fire" promoting the Battlezone remake for the PC stating it's advanced PC accelerator technology as proof that consoles were falling behind the times.
This was of course before the days of rampant file sharing.

PC gaming isn't going to completely die off as it is still the preferred platform for strategy games and MMORPGs but the glory days of PC gaming when the PC had so many great exclusives like Deus Ex, Baldur's Gate, System Shock 2, etc. are long over and will never come back.

You're right, PC gaming isn't going anywhere. It's staying exactly where it is as a platform for console ports and no exclusives other than strategy games and MMORPGs.

Fallout 3 was fine on the PC though so I'm not worried about Fallout:New Vegas.

Rumors about the death of PC gaming have been rampant for many years, while you may be able to find some stories about consoles falling behind, you can find plenty more about how the PC is becoming obsolete for gaming. Still, both persist. And both will continue to persist, so long as computers cost more than consoles and people continue to buy PCs that can run modern games. The only way that PC gaming is going to die is if consoles become so much like PCs that they become difficult to differentiate, but in that case, is it the PC that is dying or the console?

You are right in saying that the PCs days of dominance have ended, but it'll be sticking around for some time yet, I promise.

I'm a little worried that obsidian is developing it though, but thats just me being paranoid I guess.

The screenies look great (albeit pretty much the same as fallout 3).

I don't share the belief that PCs are obsolete for gaming but they are certainly not the choice platform for developers for almost all games.
The whole idea of consoles dying started when 3DFX released the voodoo GPUs in the late 90's and PC games actually started looking much better than consoles games.  Back then there were tons of great PC exclusives and even when consoles finally caught up with the release of the Sega Dreamcast and Playstation 2, PC's still had many great games that you could not find on consoles.
Being a PC gamer was a lot more fun than being a console gamer in the late 90's and early 2000's.

I like PC gaming, even today but I hate the majority of PC gamers.  I think they're some of the most naive, arrogant, selfish, apathetic people on the planet.

It'll b pretty much like Fallout 3 with a different story. Couple of announced game mechanics changes so far. Guns can be modded i.e can have a scope, bigger magazine & so forth. In hardmode you must drink water periodically & ammunition have weight. All weapons now have a special attack under VATS. I.e golfclubs special attack, an uppercut swing to your private area OUCH. Reputation & Karma is now a lot more complex and affects factions.
