It's not actual "physical sport", but more of a brain sport or mental exercise ,if you wish. It also depends on the player who plays it. Fot someone who aproaches the games in a very casual way just to kill some time, then it's more of a hobby or just something to kill some time. But for players who pour their heart, blood and tears into a game, it's much more than a simple hobby. Take pro-gamers for instance like the guys from MLG, or professional fighting games players like Daigo Umehara or Justin Wong, or any pro-gamer for that matter. For them it's a job. For someone it's a waste of time. For someone else it's a simple hobby. And for someone it's a lifestyle. It does not matter, if it's considered a sport or not. I think it's more of a perception tihng. Like what's your defenition of playing a game.
And as for the term sport itself. Well, it's hard to associate gaming with it for obvious reasons. So I think a term like E-Sport is a more appropriate one. It gives everyone the impression that it has something competitive to do with computers/consoles and not race tracks and stadiums.

You can call it a lifestyle, a passion, a job, or a way of life.  None of that is necessarily false.  It should not be called a sport though and it's participants should not be considered athletes, that is fallacious.

It may not matter to most people but for me being a true athlete I find it offensive. I train my body to withstand pain most would die from.  I don't have a problem with the concept of competitive gaming but what they do should not be compared to what I or any true athlete does.
An e-sport is as much of a sport as air hockey is hockey.

You can compare pro-gamers with pro-athlets to some degree. They both use their skills and training to compete for whatever they compete. Some use their physical strenght and others their dexterity and mind for a means to an end. So that's why I think traditional sports should be called sports and gaming an E-sport to avoid confusion and to set some kind of standard to what is what.
Also I don't think you should be offended. I think everyone here can distinct an athlet from a gamer. It's basicly just a matter of terms from what I understand.

Those comparisons are superficial though as we're comparing an athletic physical activity to a sedentary activity.  An athlete by rule cannot be sedentary.
"e-sport" is a misnomer as not everything that requires skill is a sport.

Wrong.  Competition is not synonymous with sport.

It is a highly competetive medium which requires great dedication and physical prowess (high skill level with periphery).

Yes, it's a sport.

It requires zero physical prowess.  Gaming is not a physical activity regardless of how skilled you are.

Then I'm sure it's something you could do without limbs?  Obviously not.  It requires physical dexterity and precision.

Have you ever heard of golf?  That is a sport which requires very little of the physical aspects your "real man sports" require but it still takes a GREAT deal of knowledge and dexterity/precision.

It's a sport broski, whether you like it or not.

Sitting on the couch in front of a TV is still a sedentary activity, even if you're flicking your wrist.  It requires about as much stamina as reaching for the popcorn and beer.

It requires fast reflexes and concentration but no actual strength, agility or endurance which is what defines an athlete.  A blind man can't bird watch, does that mean bird watching is a sport?  AFterall it takes skill to identify birds.

Playing golf requires significantly more energy expenditure than playing video games so you can't really compare the two.  Golf is a physical activity, gaming is not.

Not really.  It's marketed as such for the sake of entertainment as are many other competitive events like poker but it's not really a sport in the truest sense of the definition.
It's participants are skillful, but they are not athletes.

Look at where sports originated, Ancient Greece.  The sports varied but they all had a lot in common as they required their participants to advanced physical attributes in several categories such as strength and speed.
That is how we defined sports and that is how we defined athletes.

It's considered a sport for entertainment's sake so it can be covered on sports networks like ESPN but it is not really a sport since it's competitors are not athletes.
Bowling is a sport I would agree.

It's likely that sports have existed far longer than recorded history...But, you're still wrong. The first recorded instances of humans partaking in organized sporting events come from China.

Oh I see, so you just cherry-pick the "sports" you like even though bowling doesn't fit with the Greek definition.
