Is your Origins disc region 2? If it is it isn't compatible with Region 1 Awakening, I've had exactly the same issue. Unfortunately the only resolution I've found (after posting on here, contacting EA and doing a fair bit of researching on the net) is to buy a Region 1 version of Origins (managed to get hold of one on ebay).
The other thing to do is to get a refund for Awakening and download it from the PSN (I still understand fully why Europe got a raw deal with Awakening and never got a disc version, though from what I've read it's out of Bioware's control) The only other slightly bad news is it may not be easy to get a refund unless you go back to the shop you got it from (this varies from place to place, you may want to contact them if you want a refund for Awakening).
I've asked Bioware to update the FAQ on the Awakening site to let people know that Origins and Awakening have to be from the same region to work, but as of yet they haven't changed it.

not as far as i know. My region 1 origins disc came yesterday and unfortunately none of the saves transfer from one origins game to the other. I've started a new character on the american version of Origins but haven't noticed anything different from the european version as of yet.
