I'd ditch:

Zaeed: the wanker brought about an unnecessary retcon that actually brought less to the table than what the original lore had (Blue Suns retcon). He's also a loser, no ifs or buts. He uses cliched lines to try and sound badass, and his loyalty mission consists of one cliched line after another in order to try and convince you of this, yet it has the opposite affect. Did Bobba Fett need constant reminders that he was badass? No, all you needed was a "No disintegrations" from Darth Vader and his silence did the rest. Bobba's silence is evidence enough that badasses should know when to keep their mouths shut, as Jenga's constant talking is evidence of loss of coolness factor that occurs when mouth opens.

Morinth: Do you really need me to explain this one?

Kasumi: Didn't buy her, so wouldn't have her in my squad. Everyone's worship of the new locust SMG proves to me that her dlc is probably unbalanced, if the locust invalidates the need for an assault rifle then its doing something wrong, namely being overpowered.

Liara T'Soni: Am I seriously the only one with issues regarding her VA? I mean come on, it doesn't even match up with her appearance, nor her personality, not that her personality has much. I think I fell asleep at the keyboard trying to talk to her once.

Miranda Lawson: They ruined a perfectly good character concept first by getting the wrong VA for her and then trying to make Miranda look like her VA. Even if she did not suffer from uncanny valley syndrome, her appearance does not suit the 'cold hearted fem fatale' look. Plus, the character is just dull.

Jacob: See Miranda.

Wrex: Now I do not include him here because I dislike him. I love the guy, but he has a bigger role in leading his people, something he clearly valued more than anything else even in ME1 when he was in denial, and he should not be forced into the squad just because players want him there.

Everyone else can stay. I just realised, I just chopped out all the humans except the ME1 ones (of which there can be only one per game since you have to sacrifice one on Virmire)! Oh well, I'd prefer no humans at all, but those took priority, and the ME1 ones are not that bad, for a race of vermin that is...

EDIT:  Oh wait Jack's human too right?  Damn, um, well maybe biotic enhancement means she doesn't count, and if not then I'm sure I can force some genetic engineering on her that changes her into some alien freakshow at some point to correct this problem.

If I could choose, these are the ones I found most fun to use in combat

 1) Kasumi
2) Mordin
3) Zaeed
4) Thane (still say he should have had Kasumi's SS and no shredder
)5) Miranda (squad bonus + warp)
6) Garrus (I like snipers, can't you tell)
 7) Kaidan  (I like biotics, though I didn't like using Jacob/Sam/Jack...).

By the way...why do people suggest Kolyat as an acceptable replacement for Thane? He wasn't trained since the age of 12 to kill ...nor does he have any special skills.    In fact, if you think Kolyat is good team fodder, forget the 7 above--try this replacement  team in ME3:

1) The sushi chef from the citadel (for Kasumi)
2) The Salarian bartender in Omega (for Mordin)
3) Jaedore (yes you killed her, but she's replacing Zaeed, so she too can survive on rage)
4) Kolyat
5) Oriana Lawson  (for Miranda)
6)Omega punk with the 50 credit pistol (for Garrus)
7)  Jacob ..oh wait, they did do that

Shepard will then be replaced by Conrad Verner. ..or his wife, Connie if you're playing Fem Shep.

Just a thought. Wouldn't it make more sense to count Ashley and Kaidan or Samara and Morinth as one character, being as you can only have one or the other? My dream team looks like this (and is actually based on in-game logic, not just who I'd prefer):

- Kaidan Alenko
- Liara T'Soni
- Tali'zorah vas Normandy
- Garrus Vakarian
- Mordin
- Samara
- Kasumi
- Thane Krios
- Grunt
- Legion

Edit: To clarify, I've ditched Zaeed, Jack, Miranda, Morinth, Jacob, Wrex, and Ashley.

Good thread.  Anyway, this is who I, if I was a writer for ME3 would ditch and some basic reasons why.

1.  Samara- During the dialogue, she says that she's only helping Shepard for this one mission, and should she survive, she's going back to writing wrongs throughout the galaxy at large.

2.  Liara T'Soni- Probably going to become the new Shadow Broker and assist you that way as opposed to joining your crew.

3.  Wrex- based on if you let him live in ME1, he's still head of the ruling clan on Tu'chanka.

4.  Thane- is probably dead by then.

5.  Morinth- if you chose her, she probably splits once your mission is complete since she needs to kill, and there's probably not much killing being done on the Normandy itself.

6.  Zaheed- if you played as a paragon throughout the entire game, this dude may be dead / dying at the end of his loyalty mission, or at the end of the suicide mission.  Even if he's not, Shepard doesn't like him, and would probably NOT keep him around.

7.  Kasumi- is the only other person I could see leaving the Normandy after ME2.   She has another career after all.

Grunt also. It is said by the Shaman (Anyone think that could possibably be Wrex's father) that the Krogan peope NEED Grunt, and numerous other things in the email after Grunt's loyalty mission. So Grunt is out too.

The real reason for Zaeed would most likely be he got his money. and EVEN BETTER (for me) would be if you followed Paragon, and didn't get Vito, he is out to kill you for wasting 20 years of his life.

And thank you sir, for killing Thane. That NEEDS to be in the story for emotional effect. It would be epic to see his son go BA for his daddy

 Would ditch:

- Ashley (she's dead in every mission I play anyway)

- Miranda

- Jacob

- Legion

- Wrex (not cause I don't love him - I do! - but I think he needs to lead the krogan)

- Zaeed

- hmmm... tough choice for seventh... I'll go with Grunt, even though I love him. ^_^

I absolutely love all the other characters (even Morinth!) and would love to see them in ME3.

I'd get rid of:

Zaeed (sorry Zaeed! not enough room)

Morinth (too dangerous to have around)

Liara (she always bored me)

Kaidan (he was a real jerk to me in ME2, so bye!)/I guess Ashley goes with that.

Grunt (he does nothing for me)

Miranda (I don't hate her or anything, but I like others way more)

Thane (ibid)

Personally, I'd prefer that you'd be able to select your squad (of 10 or so) from the ME1 and ME2 squads, but here's who I'd suggest keeping if BioWare cut seven.

1. Legion - He's a late character, doesn't get much focus on him in ME2, but he's heavily hinted at having a large role to play in the overall ME universe. Beside, we need some resolution with the geth/quarian conflict.
2. Tali - Well-liked by those who romanced her as well as by those who think of her as a little sister. Steady rock by Shepard's side. Also ties into geth/quarian conflict.
3. Garrus - Well-liked by those who romanced him as well as those who think of him as a bro. Steady rock by Shepard's side.
4. Miranda - Cerberus agent. Cerberus isn't through with Shepard yet. Romance is a bonus too.
5. Jacob - Same as Miranda.
6. Ashley - Played an important role in ME1, heavily hinted that she'd pick up a romance again if given the chance, and overall, fact that you decide if she lives or dies indicates importance narratively.
7. Kaidan - Same as Ashley.
8. Liara - Fanbase is extremely irritated by her brief appearance in ME2 and I can hardly blame them. Issues with Shadow Broker, rival of Cerberus, indicates importance and she's a pretty popular romance choice.
9. Mordin - I'm willing to let him go, because he's pretty old anyway, but I think it's fair to say he's a well-beloved character. Plus, his work on genophage could prove useful in ME3.
10. Grunt - He could use a little bit of color in ME3 that he lacked in ME2 post-loyalty mission, but I'm willing to bet BioWare has plans for his character. The ultimate krogan and all. Plus, he swore Shepard's his battlemaster.

Here's who I'd cut:

1. Zaeed - I like him well enough and he's got more depth than people give him credit for, but he's wholly unnecessary. I'd be happy if he stuck around, but I just don't see why he should.
2. Kasumi - Same reasons as Zaeed. Charming and all, but really extraneous.
3. Thane - Interesting character, has a vocal if small fanbase, a good romance, and has one of the better loyalty quests but he's dying. Of an incurable disease. If there was an option to cure him, I'd take it, but if we have to cut somebody, might as well be him.
4. Jack - I'm given to understand that she's also dying (though I've never uncovered this information myself) so the same reasons as Thane.
5. Wrex - I like Wrex - more than Grunt - but his place is with his people. Clan Urdnot needs Wrex and I'm more than happy to see him as an allied NPC rather than a party member in ME3.
6. Samara - Of all the characters I wondered the most why she was working with Shepard. Zaeed and Kasumi are paid and seem to value survival well-enough, but why is Samara playing mercenary? She already has a quest and while you can help her accomplish it you don't have to. I see no reason why she wouldn't go back to her usual Justicar duties.
7. Morinth - Why would you even recruit this psycho-vampire? Because she's hot? You deserve what you get then.

I think it's fair if we prioritize the romance interests, Nivenus. If you include one, include them all. There are plenty of Thane and Jack fans, and those romances are well done.

In principle, I agree. But I'm listing characters who I think have an overall importance to the storyline. For instance, I like Jack as a character more than Grunt. But I think Grunt makes more sense narratively.

I would not be unhappy at all if Jack or Thane were included. I'm just saying what I would do as the writer.

EDIT: To explain myself more concretely, players who romance Thane or Jack know that they have a big giant mortality issue hanging over their head. To ensure their survival just to get a happy ending seems disingenuous to the way BioWare wrote them. I'm sure there's plenty of Thane fans who do not expect to see him in ME3 for precisely this reason.

Jack is a little bit nebulous because I've still yet to actually find the dialogue that says she's dying. But it's there apparently, somewhere.

I only think it is fair that ME3 keeps all the potential LIs from the first two games.

I am also including Legion as one of the ten recruitable characters because he acts like an ambassador for the Geth.

Drop:

6) Wrex

9) Mordin

12) Grunt

13) Kasumi

15) Morinth

16) Samara

17) Zaeed

Correction: You only have 15 characters MAX alive in any one continuous playthrough, and Kasumi was paid DLC (not everyone might have her). That knocks it down to 14 on an optimistic note.

If we're still going for the limit of 10...I'd ditch:

Zaeed: He's badass, but inconsequental.
Liara: I kinda her character, but she has a lot of potential even as a non-recruitable.
Grunt/Wrex: It's one or the other, I like both equally.
Jacob: Also a perfectly fine character, but depressingly one-dimensional.

And that'll get me down to 10.

they could throw her in as an free squadmate in ME3, and just make an decision on what you did with the greybox. Justa saying. =P

Nice thread.

Ditched from my squad would be:

1. Ashley (liked her, but dead for my canon)

2. Liara

3. Grunt (again, liked him, but kinda an extraneous soldier for me)

4. Morinth (could never imagine doing a ME2 playthrough that included her)

5. Kasumi

6. Jacob (least favourite ME character by a mile)

7. Zaeed (loved him, but again - DLC and generic soldier)

To keep (in order of importance for me)

1. Mordin

2. Garrus

3. Kaidan

4. Miranda

5. Tali

6. Samara

7. Wrex (great character, but if he has a major NPC role, would be happy)

8. Thane

9. Jack

10. Legion (same as Wrex - wouldn't necessarily need to be squad)
