Good thread.  Anyway, this is who I, if I was a writer for ME3 would ditch and some basic reasons why.

1.  Samara- During the dialogue, she says that she's only helping Shepard for this one mission, and should she survive, she's going back to writing wrongs throughout the galaxy at large.

2.  Liara T'Soni- Probably going to become the new Shadow Broker and assist you that way as opposed to joining your crew.

3.  Wrex- based on if you let him live in ME1, he's still head of the ruling clan on Tu'chanka.

4.  Thane- is probably dead by then.

5.  Morinth- if you chose her, she probably splits once your mission is complete since she needs to kill, and there's probably not much killing being done on the Normandy itself.

6.  Zaheed- if you played as a paragon throughout the entire game, this dude may be dead / dying at the end of his loyalty mission, or at the end of the suicide mission.  Even if he's not, Shepard doesn't like him, and would probably NOT keep him around.

7.  Kasumi- is the only other person I could see leaving the Normandy after ME2.   She has another career after all.

Grunt also. It is said by the Shaman (Anyone think that could possibably be Wrex's father) that the Krogan peope NEED Grunt, and numerous other things in the email after Grunt's loyalty mission. So Grunt is out too.

The real reason for Zaeed would most likely be he got his money. and EVEN BETTER (for me) would be if you followed Paragon, and didn't get Vito, he is out to kill you for wasting 20 years of his life.

And thank you sir, for killing Thane. That NEEDS to be in the story for emotional effect. It would be epic to see his son go BA for his daddy

For Zaheed, you can leave him on that planet trapped, can't you?  That would ****** him off.

The reason I didn't pick Grunt is because he claims Shepard as his Battlemaster, as well as following Shepard because Shepard has more powerful enemies than anyone else living.  Since Grunt was bred to fight... ah, nevermind.  I just remembered that Grunt may be one of the answers for the Genophage.  He'll go back to Tu'Chanka and be bred to death lol.

Aw, my paragon Shepard liked Zaeed just fine.

I think it's fair if we prioritize the romance interests, Nivenus. If you include one, include them all. There are plenty of Thane and Jack fans, and those romances are well done.

In principle, I agree. But I'm listing characters who I think have an overall importance to the storyline. For instance, I like Jack as a character more than Grunt. But I think Grunt makes more sense narratively.

I would not be unhappy at all if Jack or Thane were included. I'm just saying what I would do as the writer.

EDIT: To explain myself more concretely, players who romance Thane or Jack know that they have a big giant mortality issue hanging over their head. To ensure their survival just to get a happy ending seems disingenuous to the way BioWare wrote them. I'm sure there's plenty of Thane fans who do not expect to see him in ME3 for precisely this reason.

Jack is a little bit nebulous because I've still yet to actually find the dialogue that says she's dying. But it's there apparently, somewhere.

IIRC, somewhere in Jack's romance she mentions neural degeneration, which either is caused by or is causing her super-biotics. It's not quite as DYING DYING DYING as Thane, but I certainly can't think of a positive way to spin neural degeneration.

There isn't anything that specifically says she's dying. There is description for her biotic upgrade that mentions while a biotic's powers would diminish with neurological degradation, Jack's biotic powers are getting stronger. So she's suffering from neurological degradation, but whether or not this puts an expiration date on her life is never stated. Also doesn't say if all biotics suffer or will suffer from neurological degradation.

Thane's death seems more imminent, but I don't know that they'd kill him off, without somehow having a similar tragic ending for Jack.  Not that BW provides perfect parity for male/female LI's, but it seemed like they tried for the most part this time around.

The closest thing I have found that references her possibly dying is in the description for the upgrade you can get off her which enhances her biotic abilities: it says that she is suffering from neural degeneration which would normally reduce other biotics' abilities but seems to be enhancing hers.  I wouldn't say this was evidence of her dying, but its the closest that I have found that references it, there could be some other source that people are refering to when they say she is dying.

EDIT: Maybe I should read the thread before commenting, Pacifien already mentioned this hours ago. ^_^

I would ditch the following as squadmembers:

Samara - Goes off to do her lawful stupid thing.
Thane - Dies/is dying.
Wrex - Unifies the Krogan.
Liara - Is an information trader now.
Zaeed - No Cerberus money, no Zaeed.
Jack - Unless you romanced her, I can't think of a reason why she'd stay with Shepard.
Mordin - He's getting a little old for frontline action.

Not because I dislike any of these characters, they just seem least likely to return. Kasumi probably has little chance of returning too because she's DLC . But because she seems to be quite popular I hope Bioware will reconsider writing her off.

I'd ditch:

-Zaeed - I just don't like him, abrasive son of a...
-Liara - ME1 Liara's foot eating was kinda charming but ME2 Liara's voice is soooo annoying, bye bye
-Jack - Again, just don't like her, yet another abrasive character
-Jacob - Nothing wrong with him, he's just not interesting
-Tali - More interesting than in ME1 but still pretty boring
-Wrex - Again, not particularly interesting, he can stay on Tuchanka, at least Grunt's good for a chuckle :) Oh Grunt doesn't have that retardedly high head support thing on his armour either, that thing really annoys me.

The 7th one is difficult, I mean I'd ditch Ashley but she's already been nuked for both my characters, all the other characters are likable but if I really had to choose, probably Kasumi, just because she has less interaction than others and being downloadable she prolly won't be back anyway :P

Ditch:

Liara - annoying in ME1, not as annoying in ME2 simply because she is more easily avoidable.
Morinth - No real appeal for me.
Zaeed - Also no real appeal for me.
Grunt - I preferred Wrex.
Miranda - Go cry about being perfect to someone else.
Samara - I like her, but I don't mind her going off doing her Justicar thing elsewhere.
Kasumi - I really like her, but I'm at a loss as to the last person to drop. Being a (mostly) straight female (<3<3<3 Aria), I wouldn't mind a crew of eye candy (<3<3<3 Garrus and Thane).

Who I’d keep:

1) Liara T’Soni

2) Mordin Solus

3) Kasumi Goto

4) Legion

5) Samara

6) Ashley Williams

7) Jack “Subject Zero”

8) Tali’Zorah vas Normandy

9) Wrex

10) Garrus Vakarian

Though in all honesty in terms of plot continuity from ME1>ME2 I see the following staying as squad mates:

1) Miranda Lawson

2) Jacob “Prize” Taylor

With the Cerberus focal plot of ME2 it seems inevitable that these two will stick with Shepard till the very end, and reducing them to cameo roles (esp. if they both, or at least Miranda, quit Cerberus) seems like it wouldn’t really make much sense.

3) Mordin Solus

I have a mixed view for Mordin, sure I’d love for him to be a squad member again in ME3 but he’s getting old. I don’t know if he’d still want to keep going in ME3 or work with Shepard on the sidelines (like Dr Chakwas is the Normandy’s doctor, Mordin may end up being the Normandy’s scientist)

4) Kaiden Alenko/Ashley Williams

5) Liara T’Soni

The developers already promised that these 3 would indefinitely carry over to ME3 hence the cameo roles in ME2- Liara seemingly having a heavier impact on the overall ME plotline than the other two (I think?) However with the possibility of a love triangle due to ME2’s romances, maybe it would be enough to force them to leave Shepard’s team should they not be chosen? It’s a thought, though it probably won’t end up like that.

6)Legion

7) Garrus Vakarian

Legion was introduced late into the ME2 plot, so I can’t help but feel he’d get more air time in ME3- that and he may be needed as the Geth figure head when we no doubt have to bring them into the fray against the Reapers. As for Garrus he’s technically ‘dead’ after his recruitment mission, so with nowhere else to really go he’d probably stick it out till the end with Shepard regardless. He’d have more of a reason to do so if romanced. Like Liara, Ash and Kaiden, maybe he’d leave or be un-cooperative if not chosen as the final romance option?

8) Tali’Zorah vas Normandy.

Same as Legion, she’ll be the Quarian figure head and no doubt useful if it comes down to bringing peace between creation and creator. Again like Garrus she’ll have more of a reason to stay with Shepard if she was exiled from her home and/or was romanced; however I’m 50/50 with her. Her loyalties ultimately lie with her people (from what I’ve come to understand of her character anyway) If the above variables aren’t met then I can’t help but see her becoming nothing more than a cameo appearance since she may end up returning to the fleet to ready them against the Reaper threat. Same as Garrus for possible leave/un-cooperation if not chosen as final romance.

Apart from that I can’t see any of the others being a necessity to become a squad mate. The only exceptions would be Jack and Thane since they were romancable, but if they weren’t romanced then they’d probably go their separate ways.

Same goes for the others; they have ties and more important loyalties elsewhere than stick with Shepard till the end as a squaddie. Maybe they’d help out along the way but I don’t think they’d be selectable.

Of course all this is just my opinion lol

Just based on who I like and not what would make most sense story-wise:

Ditch
Kasumi, Liara, Wrex, Miranda, Morinth, Tali, and Jacob.

Keep Kaidan, Ashley, Garrus, Thane, Mordin, Grunt, Zaeed, Legion, Samara, and Jack.

All right. Let's see...

For a list that considers plot potential and popularity (use this for the poll), I'd ditch:

(1) Zaeed Massani
(2) Kasumi Goto
(3) Grunt
(4) Morinth
(5) Samara
(6) Jack "Subject Zero"
(7) Jacob Taylor

My strictly personal preferences would be to replace (6) and (7) with Wrex and Garrus, but Garrus is probaby too popular and too many people like a krogan in the squad, so I guess both won't happen.

The reasoning for the list: First, DLC characters are not part of the core squad anyway, so they go first. Morinth, Samara and Grunt neither have obvious potential for a big role in the plot nor are they LI characters. Legion and Mordin have too much potential for a big role in the plot, and all others are LI characters. So I'd remove the least popular LI characters, Jack and Jacob. There would be a better in-world reason to ditch Thane instead of Jacob, but more people would complain and I don't know if Jacob's potential as an LI character is salvageable.

If Bioware decides to give all LI characters equal treatment, slot 6 and 7 would almost have to be Mordin and Legion - which would suck, because they are among the most interesting characters.

As for a list of 7 I'd like to keep (not in the poll, but anyway):
-Miranda (plot potential and popular LI)
-Tali (plot potential and popular LI)
-Legion (plot potential, too interesting to cut)
-Mordin (plot potential, too interesting to cut)
-Ashley (plot potential and popular LI)
-Kaidan (plot potential and popular LI)
-Liara (plot potential and popular LI)

If I could I would actually want less then 10 of the possible squad mates as playable squad mates in ME3 (I want quality over quantity). Since Kaidan/Ashley and Morinth/Samara are interchangeable I count them together. If i had to keep 10 I would choose like this though.
Ditch:
1) Zaeed- DLC. Didn't like. Don't feel I can trust him.
2) Kasumi- DLC. Liked her, would love her back as cameo.
3) Jacob- Didn't like, mainly because of how femShep behaves.
4/5) Morinth/ Samara- Never played with Morinth. Samara continues her Justicar business.
6) Thane - Dying, rather want him spend time with Kolyat
7) Wrex - Don't want him back as playable char. I'd rather have him in charge of the Krogan army helping me against the reapers. He would help out in battle in the same way as Cap. Kirahe in ME1.

Most people are ditching Wrex not because they dislike him or don't want him in the squad but because they see him needing to stay behind to lead the Krogans.  I think he's the one ME1 character that most people seem to agree has a very good reason not to join up with Shepard (he's trying to save his people).

I agree, suprised people don't want to keep Kasumi considering she has the grey box with black mail on the alliance because apparently they have reaper schematics. >.>
