I'm well into the game, but now stuck on the Lost Operative mission. I can't bypass the door to get to the operative. In the whole game I haven't been able to bypass/hack anything. I thought my character might grow into it. I've tried various key combinations, another mouse, to no avail.

The pieces often won't stick together. I select one & by the time I can get it to the corresponding piece, the yellow spot disappears & the pieces won't join. Short pieces often can be joined but longer ones won't join. I'm too slow. A couple of times I got 4 of the 5 wires joined. There should be other people having the same problem. I've changed the mouse -- same prob. Whats with the yellow spot? Using the keyboard won't help. Will there be a patch? Any ideas?

Err, nope. Not sure what the issue is for you.

Bypass: just select and join the matching symbols. You need to use the mouse for that.

Hacking: Keyboard only. Use the WASD keys to move around on the display and Space to select the appropriate pattern. Rinse and repeat 3 times.

You might want to try changing the mouse sensitivity, or if your mouse has an on-the-fly DPI changer, use that. Some people have had this problem in the PC version: when you set the mouse so the camera doesn't fly all over the place, the mouse movement in the minigames becomes very slow.

I had to edit the Coalesced.ini file manually, because the mouse sensitivity setting in the options didn't seem to do anything with my mouse.

Depending on what your system specs are, that might be an issue as well. A slow system can result in some horrible response regardless of mouse sensitivity (I upgraded my computer recently and have been running this game smoothly on high detail including the hacking and bypassing).

Maybe you should try reloading the mission. I've had it happen, and I don't know if this is intended or a bug, but I've had it happen where I ignored some enemies and tried to bypass a door, but then I got hit and it interrupted me. After that, I couldn't access the bypass menu period and I had to restart.

The "one-time" hacks and bypasses usually result in finding credits and upgrades.  Those you have to make sure that the area is clear.  But some of the other ones have "infinite" tries since those are ones that allow you to progress further in the game (mainly these are just doors).

If you can't hack or bypass then you need to return your copy of Mass effect 2 to Bioware. You aren't allowed to play anymore I'm afraid.

If you notice there is a timer on how long a piece in the security bypass is selected, after the timer runs out it deselects. The timer is indicated by a reducing circle around the piece selected. The best way to do this is to mouse over a piece, find it's corresponding piece, click the second one and quickly click the first one you found. If you take too long between selecting the first piece and selecting the second piece then the first piece deselects and they won't join.

They have things you can buy to extend the time you have to bypass or hack a system. The Bypass is on Illium (not completely sure, someone please correct me if I'm wrong) and the Hack one is on Omega.

Because arrogance fixes things. I can't hack either. why? Because the controls won't work. The little scrolling thing? yeah if the right combo isn't 3 in a row I'm sunk because there is no force on heaven or earth that will get the box to move. I'm on the PC btw. Mass Effect 2 has been out for awhile, you'd think they'd patch it or something lol.

Erm for hacking it's WASD to move the box and space to select by default....
