Hello All.
I just beat Origins for the first time through with a S&S Dwarf Noble Warrior. I wan to go again but with a female and do different choices. I dont want to do S&S again as I have one to carry over to Awakenings. I am very torn with 2h War, DW War, and Rogue builds. If I go war I want to switch up my party and not use Leliana as much but I am worried about missing out due to chests and exp from traps. I am also intrigued by a AW mage but that specialization comes pretty late, and I dont really understand the mechanics from what I read here. I am looking for general pros and cons of these and party concepts to play again. I have read 11 pages of forum posts today and am still torn. Any advice or opinions would be great. Thanks for your help.

Play a DW Rogue with lockpicking and you can go without Leliana in your party. Put both mages in your party so you can get used to building a mage - either as a Damager or Healer - for your next playthrough as a mage. For your 4th npc, you can alternate between a tank and DPS as the quest warrants.

A DW Rogue spec'd as Assassin/Duelist can deal with any opponent 1-on-1.  Against Warriors, backstab.  Against mages, stealth up to them and backstab to death.  Can detect traps and pick locks.  Use poison and dual daggers with runes.  Put your points into Cunning and Dexterity, only get as much Strength as is required to wear medium armor.  Get Lethality talent.

Seconded--and play as a City Elf!  That Origin just seems to be custom made for female DW rogues.

Mages are spectacular, but rogues are the most fun imo.

I've played them all and the most fun by far was a DW rogue. Stealthing, backstabbing, disarming traps = good times! Awesome paired up with Zev - we'd flank a boss and no matter which way it turned, one of us was backstabbing.

City elf female is a nice contrast to the Dwarf male noble. You will not have the starting cash potential that the DN has, but you will be able to tell off a human king immediately upon arrival in Ostagar. Just remember to boost cunning first and put at least one point into stealing before going back to Denerim for the first time as a Gray Warden.

Forget the Rogue & Warrior - Mages is were it is at! Your one character can control the entire battle. No little chump Rogue or Warrior can ever dream of that. Sure, sure Rogue's can backstab - the same freaking attack over and over and over and over again. Or you can play a warrior with three or four special attacks - *yawn*. Or play a mage with a ton of options in each battle!

Mass Paralysis, Fireball, Stinging Swarm, Mana Clash, Cone of Cold, Inferno, Blood Wound, Blood Control, Glyph of Repulsion, Walking Bomb, Hexes - I could go one and on. The other classes wish they had that many options. Once you play a Mage the other classes are well - boring! That has been my number one problem since completeing a mage play through. Once you are used to kicking the tar out of everything it is a lot harder to go be some little sword/dagger/bow welder!

Ok. So I am gonna try the City elf Rogue. Any tips or guides for set up? My only experiance was Leliana and I did her as an archer. Also I did DtO, WK, and SP early before. Should I wait this time through?. The fun will be min/maxing gear since I know WK items dont carry over to Awakenings. Oh a note I am on the XBox. Thanks

If anyone has a say on the the 2H war or DW war that would be great. Thinking either Human noble or Dwarf Commoner for those. Probably a human for my AW mage.

The DW rogue's focus in combat is stealth, stuns and positioning, rather than AoE talents that are more the domain of a DW warrior.  The big decision is whether to build a cunning rogue (more damage, better songs) or a dex rogue (easier to hit and harder to be hit, often almost untouchable).   I don't know if tBioware fixed the XBox version so that dex adds to dagger damage - if not, then go cunning.  In any event, put 30 points in one and pretty much everything else in the other, plus enough strength to wear the best light armor.

Talent-wise, you want Deft Hands and Momentum asap.  Coup de Grace and max Stealth should be the next priorities.  Coup de Grace pairs nicely with Dirty Fighting.  A dex rogue eventually needs Device Mastery while a cunning rogue wants Lethality.  Riposte is handy, too.  And of course, you also need to mix in your specializations.  Bard is great for a cunning rogue and the others all have their strong points - another reason I like rogues so much.

As you can see, rogues are talent starved so buy the extra tome from Bodahn at first camp (he'll restock) as a rogue can easily have enough gold to do so.

You will want to be a cunning rogue on the xbox. Dual wepaons is a lot more fun than archery early on. Go for Lethality ASAP. Whether or not you do the Stone Prisoner and Wardens Keep early depends upon you. I like having NPCs early for dialogue options and the ability to mold their talent/skill choices. But that's more critical for Wynne and Oghren than it is for Shale.

The advantage of waiting on Return to Ostagar and Wardens Keep is that the longer you wait, the better the loot becomes due to scaling. The Warden Commander looks really good, but isn't really rogue armour, so it can probably wait. The loot from Honnleath does not scale (in general) and is really nice to have (the Helm in particular).

My best advice is that if you enjoy roleplaying, go in with the attitude that you are your papa's daughter and you love him, your family, your people and your life. You are happy to be engaged and are looking forward to being married. Be nice to your fiance. But play it how you prefer. I just think being happy makes the last half of the origin and the rest of the game have more depth.

In molding your character, max out cunning. Get coercion as much and as early as possible. Get one point of stealing and get deft hands as much as you can.

Vaughan will offer you a "devil's deal". If you roleplay, play your character truly. If you are more of a powergamer and want to know the metagame, there are consequences later for accepting the deal. Check the wiki on this. I've never taken the deal so I'm going on what I've read.

There are no consequences for telling Cailan exactly what you think, other than amusement value. Also, call Howe a talking donkey.

There are a lot of subtle dialogue changes for being a city elf throughout the game. If you played a dwarf before and spoke with the ash warrior leader, talk with him again. Murdoch and Owain have slightly different speeches. The dwarves in Orzammar react with surprise, mostly.

Whenever you are in the Alienage (once in Origin, once before Landsmeet and once at the very end), speak with every person you see. You can get some interesting comments. Shianni is well worth speaking with, as is Alarith.

Your last play was as a man. Do try romancing either Alistair or Zevran. If you harden Alistair and Lelianna you want to learn Duelist from Isabella late in the game. You've probably unlocked it already, so there is no in game consequence to doing so. It's just that if you are in a romance with any or all of the three potential partners and you have good coercion and speak with Isabella, you can open up some interesting and amusing options.

Have fun!

Last time I ran myself as a good noble born tank (so supported Harrowmont). I used Leliana as range dps (lockpicking/traps) and she was also my dps. Oghren for melee dps, and Wynne for heals. I am thinking Alistar, Me, Wynne, and Morrigan this play-through. I figured I would end up being cunning due the dex bug (not sure if fixed). I also planned on daggers with Light armor to stick to the rogue RP values or atleast as I imagine it. Does anyone have a site to see builds? I have been reading on the forums that there is certain DW talents that arent need, and I am curious about that. I know for SnS war I took the whole tree, Same with Leliana's archer build. The mages seem to be the only classes that jump through trees a lot so I dont want to mis a jump if I have to make one. Thanks for all the help guys, Your the best..

Side Note I am gonna do my 2h/DW war as a human noble, though havent decided on 2h or DW yet..lol..

@DWSmiley What do you mean at first camp buy the tome? I only remember one being offered to my War. Is there a certain time to get it? Does this happen with other tomes/Items?

Bodahn offers a talent tome (for a warrior or rogue) and an spell tome.  If you buy one the first time you go to camp, he'll restock it so you can buy another one later.  In fact, he'll restock the talent tome a second time, after the Landsmeet.  So you can eventually buy three from him.

To get enough gold for first camp, your rogue will need to demand rewards from everyone she helps.

One very minor goal of mine is to play a less honorable Rogue just once to pilfer both Duncan and Piotin to gain a full set of 3 Grandmaster Hale runes for use in one truly stable weapon; probably for use in the off-hand.

So Far the rogue is kinda fun.. I picked up one stealing and deft hands right away to just knock them out and put my first 5 points into dex to start geting it where it needs to be before cunning, The city elf origin was fun.. Especially getting the finishing move of taking off Vaughan's head.. I am still interested in seeing some cunning builds since I am stuck that way on the console. This is very different though as I need to set up a tank now and other dps. I wasnt very good with tactics my first run though it didnt seem to matter much as my SnS war held most the aggro.. Any advice on tactics would be awesome..

Any class may have Coersion, but it is only for the Warden; not any NPC. As Rogues gain Skills more frequently than the other classes, I find it used best here.

I understand that, but I know Intimidate works off str instead of cunning which is used for persuade.. I was wondering if i will be able to see intimidate as a rogue or only the persuade options..

Check out this guide's advice on backstabber rogues.  I followed it and was ginsuing my way through the game from level 6 onward.  It also has good advice on other classes/builds which may be helpful for setting up your companions.

That guide is great.. So my understanding is that due to stealth and other need rogue talents and your 1 or 2 specializations you will never actually max out any of the dual wield trees. So what do I take from there then?

Personally for Origins, I usually skip the Assassin Talents, and only accept the initial spec bonuses. I am not fond of the third tier DW tree myself, and use these selections for the Duelist line instead. For Awakenings, I can then respec if desired, but have not gotten that far quite yet.
