Is it this thread again? Yes It is.
Yes Bioware make the games predominantley for men, but surely Bioware does better on the ethnicity/gender/sexuality equality front than most devs.
The fact there's female romance options or a female character option attall is surely a rare thing, Bioware do better than most.
They put the most work into the parts of the game most players will see, sorry just seems to be a fact, so that means sharing the same animations, having a highly detailed sheploo model, etc.
I thought Bioware tried to give the men more "sexy" outfits too though, okay maybe not Mordin or Garrus, but Jacob and Thane in paticular seemed to have outfits geared towards sex apeal, ofcourse you can debate wether it worked atall but just saying, the more sexualised outfits were not a wholey female phenomenon in the game.

Title: Respect women and you'll get more sex

Please change the provocative thread title. You're making it sound like women barter or sell their sexuality in exchange for attention and that men are the knuckle-dragging consumers who only serve to take advantage of it.

I think the whole premise of the thread is offensive to both genders.

Ecael, nicely said.

The OP makes some good points.   I'm sure the thread has lots of suggestions of a  few things BW could do that would make the game less off-putting for  female gamers, without losing a lot of the core appeal for male gamers.

I do think BW cares about its female fans--it just doesn't care as much as  it does about its male ones, because as the OP noted, female fans aren't the  core audience.    I hope that changes over time, since I  know female gamers are increasing in number as video games become more accepted and mainstream as entertainment.   Heck, they even cover games in Entertainment Weekly now, which used to just do movies, tv and books.

So perhaps BW is thinking about these types of things, for the next game, how to balance appeal to the core, without turning off other segments of potential customers.

I haven't had time to read through all the pages to see what suggestions have turned up already, beyond the OP's.  I scanned and just kept seeing a lot of churlish reactions from people who, I can only guess, feel threatened by the suggestion that  a video game ought to have more appeal to women.

I'm a female player, and I feel that BioWare handled the whole thing very well. I can't remember the last time a game allowed me to choose a female avatar and actually had that effect the dialogue and parts of the plot (referring to the romances, here)! When I heard about that, it's actually what sold me on the game.

I sort of agree on the female squadmate outfits, but the human men also wear pretty tight clothing. We can see Jacob's abs through his shirt, for crying out loud.

And your complaint about the running/ walking animation is just silly. Of course she doesn't walk in an extremely 'feminine' manner, she's been a muscly soldier for practically her whole life!

When both Sheps dance worse than this, I think it's as much about laziness than it is demographic sales.  =]

Now, this is just my opinion, so please don't judge too harshly. Personally I think there's a specific reason why it doesn't feel like there's much difference between a male and female Shepard, and Miranda in the introduction video says it best - Shepard is a symbol, an icon. He/she is an embodiment of charisma, leadership, courage, responsibility. It's what Shepard represents that matters, not what gender he/she is.

As for clothing - Kasumi is a thief - her clothing provides mobility, while loose clothes have a chance to get stuck on something.

Samara - all asari wear rather flattering clothing. I take hers to be just her own perk.

Miranda - first of all, even Bioware laughs at her choice of armor (Miranda's loyalty mission, Eclipse leader asks whether Miranda is allowed to '**** around in that outfit'). Second - Miranda knows how she looks and specifically tells you that she uses it to her advantage, as a part of the 'perfect woman package'.

Tali - both male and female quarrians wear pretty much the same style environmental suits.

In comparison, fem Shepard actually stands out because of her strict, military demeanor.

Very well said Didgeridoo.

Although FemShep didn't get any attention in the advertising, the voice acting is top rate.  BioWare has done a much better job at balancing the genders than any other producer and I would expect that ME3 will have a good bit more support for FemShep than what we've seen in the past.

Miranda and her "spandex" uniform is a bit silly though but at least there is that quote on her loyality mission where she get's insulted about wearing it (I laughed out loud there).

Just to point out, its only 'spandex' due to the inability of the engine to realistically portray it...

If you look back to the trailers etc, it is actually a two piece set of cloth material....pants and jacket :)

Exactly.

It's ironic that there would be fewer complaints about sexism if you couldn't customize your (default male Shepard) character at all. I'm glad enough that BioWare fully voiced a main female PC along with a main male PC, even if they had to make the hundreds of animations interchangeable for every character (including NPCs and squadmates).

“I hope Bioware ignores 95% of the stupid complaints in here. I don't want Shepard turned into a barbie doll, or a soap opera star, or into most of the stuff that these people want.”

That is the beauty of the RPG, you can be anybody you want to be provided that you are given the choice.

“Please change the provocative thread title. You're making it sound like women barter or sell their sexuality in exchange for attention and that men are the knuckle-dragging consumers who only serve to take advantage of it.”

Do you mean like Lady Gaga, Britany Spears, Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, et al? And if I am not very much mistaken, how you describe men is the position of the feminists is it not? One can pretty much smell the misandry in the air with them.

I have been accused of speaking in generalities, but by taking these points down to the individual level nobody will be satisfied because we all have our own opinions and what we really need to do is to build consensus, not to sound too much like Legion, not snipe at each other. To a certain extent, I have to believe that BioWare knew there was going to be controversy about a number of issues, this being one of them. Romance is something that is highly individual for males and females and there is no way that you are going to please everybody. It just isn’t possible. Hence the scatter gun approach. Some people will like the choices, others not so much.

About the animations.. I hate femshep's walk. Yes, I know she's a soldier, but women walk differently, because they're built differently. Or at least, they do based on my observations. Even the total tomboys walk like women. Honestly, I don't want female animations for everything, but for walking it'd be great. .. That and drinking, since she currently tries to drink through her eye socket.

Sure, I'd also love the entire female cast (And Jacob/Mordin etc) to wear some armour in combat (the only well armoured squad mates are all male at the moment, but that's a gaming-in-general issue - even DA:O Had no female warriors that could join you; women are rogues and mages, 'cos those types were skimpier gear, etc..), but that's also trivial.

But there is a nice balance between how the game is now, and aiming to please the femi****s. (Oh, how I love that term! ^_^ -- Edit: Or, would if they didn't censor that word.. Seriously, why do they censor that?)

Regarding the camera focusing on Miranda's ass:  So just because the camera zooms in on her ass a couple of times, that magically negates all her character development/depth?

The most 'depth' Miranda has was in her well-rendered arse crack.

... I kid! Don't kill me Miranda fans!

1. You ever see Vasquez from the movie Aliens? She was more manly than half of the male cast, but she was one kick ass Marine. It is my opinion that an elite Marine, especially one that is possibly the best warrior in the galaxy, would NOT move like a "girly girl." She would move like a man would- precise, controlled, strong movements. NO wasted motion or energy- no "swishing" of the hips like Miranda. She would be very well trained, and probably trained by men. Perhaps you would prefer someone more like Ripley from Aliens? But Ripley was no Marine. A bad ass? Yes. A Marine bad-ass? No.

2 Because of the helmets, if the female Quarians didn't wear suits that were a tad tighter than the males, could you tell them apart?

3. Someone said earlier that minorities in video games are always stereotypes. Jacob, in my opinion, broke the mold in that respect. You didn't hear him speaking slang, or womanizing, or strutting, or cracking smart mouthed jokes, did you? In fact, he was the exact opposite. He was a serious, almost boring, former soldier, who respects protocal (sp), and who turns down the female Shepard at the first opportunity. Where's the stereotype in that? If I were BioWare, I'd be offended.

4. In regards to Jacob, the female Shepard had to be more aggressive, because Jacob turns her down. Perhaps the OP has never met a sexually aggressive woman. I have. This is the 21st century. The women I know go after what they want. It's liberating- it takes a lot of pressure off of us men.

5. In response to the title of this thread, I have found that the exact opposite is true. The jerks are the ones that get more sex. The nice guys get long term relationships, much later in life.

Femsheps can't choose not to be sexually aggressive towards him. They can't talk to him like a normal person.
