Last time I checked, the military didn't allow gays to lead people. My FemShep is gay but only because I'm a male and didn't want her lips on another man. Anyways, I agree with Bioware on cutting gay relationships because it adds on to the hardness of Shepard.

[*]As for same sex romances, I think Bioware made the right call cutting them. The characters should be set in stone, I wouldn't like to see the game where every character is essentially bisexual. I don't even like that everyone wants Shepard, I've only done one romance in ME2 with Miranda, my femshep stayed loyal to Kaidan. I watched how they play out on youtube though, what i really liked was that Samara rejects you. I think more romances should be able to play out this way, I mean you can reject anyone but only Samara rejects you, it doesn't seem real. Maybe based on some of the choices you make on loyalty missions characters could reject your advances. I dunno, is that already in the game? Does Miranda still like you if you don't tell her to talk to her sister? Tali if you give the evidence to the admirals?

[*]If i remember correctly, in one of their interviews, they never intended to have Shepard be homosexual (that wasn't the wording, but it was implied). They created Mass Effect as a 3rd person narrative, while Dragon Age was created as a 1st person narrative. Shepard already had a past before any of the events in the first Mass Effect, and artificially making him to be homosexual did not align with how they viewed his character. Remember, homosexuality is still looked down upon in the military, so who iss to say that that method of thinking wouldn't continue?

But it's cool if they're girls, coz lesbians are hot, amirite?

The problem here is that there are no male homosexual romances, but multiple female ones--the game supports playing Femshep as a lesbian, even encourages it, since there are no unique male flirts for her but plenty of asari. If the argument is that female Shepard is equivalent to male Shepard, just with an X chromosome, then male Shepard should also be potentially bisexual, because Femshep sure can.

[*]If i remember correctly, in one of their interviews, they never intended to have Shepard be homosexual (that wasn't the wording, but it was implied). They created Mass Effect as a 3rd person narrative, while Dragon Age was created as a 1st person narrative. Shepard already had a past before any of the events in the first Mass Effect, and artificially making him to be homosexual did not align with how they viewed his character. Remember, homosexuality is still looked down upon in the military, so who iss to say that that method of thinking wouldn't continue?

The problem here is that there are no male homosexual romances, but multiple female ones--the game supports playing Femshep as a lesbian, even encourages it, since there are no unique male flirts for her but plenty of asari. If the argument is that female Shepard is equivalent to male Shepard, just with an X chromosome, then male Shepard should also be potentially bisexual, because Femshep sure can.

[*]If i remember correctly, in one of their interviews, they never intended to have Shepard be homosexual (that wasn't the wording, but it was implied). They created Mass Effect as a 3rd person narrative, while Dragon Age was created as a 1st person narrative. Shepard already had a past before any of the events in the first Mass Effect, and artificially making him to be homosexual did not align with how they viewed his character. Remember, homosexuality is still looked down upon in the military, so who iss to say that that method of thinking wouldn't continue?

The problem here is that there are no male homosexual romances, but multiple female ones--the game supports playing Femshep as a lesbian, even encourages it, since there are no unique male flirts for her but plenty of asari. If the argument is that female Shepard is equivalent to male Shepard, just with an X chromosome, then male Shepard should also be potentially bisexual, because Femshep sure can.

Mono-gendered doesn't mean asexual, it literally just means one gender--and that gender is female. You want the biological angle, asari gestate and carry young to term, and presumably feed them (breasts)--all characteristics that are the definition of female in biology. From a writing standpoint, there is literally nothing about the asari that reads as masculine to an audience. Female voices, female figures, female faces, culture focused on diplomacy and emotion, warriors focus on not physically engaging the enemy (in favor of biotics)--all typically female qualities in western society. Aria is the most masculine-seeming asari we've encountered, and even her body is very sexed-up.

I watched how they play out on youtube though, what i really liked was that Samara rejects you. I think more romances should be able to play out this way, I mean you can reject anyone but only Samara rejects you, it doesn't seem real. Maybe based on some of the choices you make on loyalty missions characters could reject your advances. I dunno, is that already in the game? Does Miranda still like you if you don't tell her to talk to her sister? Tali if you give the evidence to the admirals?

They created Mass Effect as a 3rd person narrative, while Dragon Age was created as a 1st person narrative. Remember, homosexuality is still looked down upon in the military, so who iss to say that that method of thinking wouldn't continue?

The problem here is that there are no male homosexual romances, but multiple female ones--the game supports playing Femshep as a lesbian, even encourages it, since there are no unique male flirts for her but plenty of asari. If the argument is that female Shepard is equivalent to male Shepard, just with an X chromosome, then male Shepard should also be potentially bisexual, because Femshep sure can.

Mono-gendered doesn't mean asexual, it literally just means one gender--and that gender is female. You want the biological angle, asari gestate and carry young to term, and presumably feed them (breasts)--all characteristics that are the definition of female in biology. From a writing standpoint, there is literally nothing about the asari that reads as masculine to an audience. Female voices, female figures, female faces, culture focused on diplomacy and emotion, warriors focus on not physically engaging the enemy (in favor of biotics)--all typically female qualities in western society. Aria is the most masculine-seeming asari we've encountered, and even her body is very sexed-up.

It is indeed sad how they take an awesome character like FemShep and totally downplay her at every turn. Its especially weird considering that after ME1 so many more people liked FemShep than MaleShep, you'd think they'd have given FemShep at least SOME promotion, but instead it was like their attitude was 'You WILL like what we like, whether you like it or not', and basicly doubled down on the promotion of the inferior Shep to the complete exclusion of FemShep. FemShep is great, lots of people enjoy the option of playing as a female lead character, its just crazy that they don't give her the respect she deserves. And yes, that includes the option to romance the GOOD LIs, Tali Jack and Miranda .

Really? I was just going off the mentions of cut same sex romance dialogue I'd seen in other threads. I don't get how it changes anything though Maybe I'm misunderstanding 1st and 3rd person, from your post I'm thinking 1st person means you create the character while 3rd person means you play as an established character. 

If it really was always intended to be 3rd person the cut same sex romance dialogue would have to end in Shepard rejecting the NPC and the NPC would have had to start the conversation so that basically everyone was hot for Shepard O_o That seems like a really wierd route to take even if they had not cut it.

What seems more likely is that the romances were designed assuming he could be homosexual before they had really decided on 1st or 3rd person and the "Mass Effect is a 3rd person narrative" thing is just an excuse used to justify cutting the same sex romances after someone had dug them out of the game files. I think it was the right decision but I don't think they really always intended that Shepard could not be gay.

The point of these forums is to discuss stuff like this so they just might take it into consideration. I am not their enemy either.

I like what they do overall but this thread is about an area that could do with improvement.

No, I don't see how it would hurt the canon by giving her a vid on the main site available for download.

Or they could just release a video highlighting the customizability of Shep, especially if they get on the ball and make some improvements to the character creator for ME3.  I'm sure the "insert race, gender here" demographic would be interested in hearing about it.

• Camera angles shamelessly feature Miranda's ass so prominently and frequently that it has it's own dedicated following
• Strippers in bars, and Kelly who wants nothing more than to dress up and dance for you personally

And what do women get?
I think Jacob's romance dialogue is the most telling of all: Bioware not only thinks men want to see women as sexually available objects, they actually think women like it: "But the priiiiiiiiiiize".

How wrong they are.

To be clear, I am not trying to take sex or sexiness out of games. I like sex and nudity as much as the next person. But not like this. There is no nudity in ME2 because in this context it would practically be porn. Bioware needs to take a more respectful, real and mature approach to sex and romance and, if they do, I think you'll find you'll see more, not less.


 

Interesting. I mainly play as a female Shepard and I mainly agree with your statements. Thane's romance was good though.

Not to derail the thread but no, what you are describing is definitely not Turner's Syndrome. The phrase Turner's Girls exists for a reason- we are female. Just as female as any ordinary 46XX woman.

Back on topic: It is obvious that ME2 was written with male Shep in mind. The animations (especially absurd if you wear the little black dress from the Kasumi DLC) are one strong piece of evidence. The writing is another. Little things like the way Jacob says Miranda deserves a better man than him. Which could be taken as a compliment for a dudeShep romancing her, but is a serious dig to any femShep brave enough to tackle the Jacob romance. So he's not good enough for Miranda but he is for Shepard?

I'm still reading the rest of this topic, but I thought I would offer a counter to the bolded part because Jacob doesn't say she deserves a better man, but requires a better man.  Add to that the way he says it and what comes before it and you'll understand intent.

Ugh... you sound just like someone I know... or rather, you sound the way she used to sound before she realised she was a lesbian (i.e. ****ed up and angry). I actually agree with the point you're making, but I think your post would be easier to stomach if you'd ditch the man-hate.
