What's up with the supposed 'EDI/Joker' love?

I am also a frequent visitor and poster to the Joker fan thread.
One of the things we discuss is the possibility of Bioware making Joker a LI in ME3.
However, I see a lot of posts saying that it's not going to happen because "EDI is Joker's true love". (Which may be a direct quote. Something similar was at least said, and the phrase "true love" is in about half the responses.)
Where's this coming from?
People have said that since Joker loves the Normandy, and EDI is a part of that, Joker must therefore love EDI.
However, Shepard is a part of the Normandy. Joker must then love Shepard. And Ken. And Gabby. And Tali and Garrus and Jacob and Miranda and... Basically, this logic is flawed.
Plus, EDI's not even a person.
EDI's artificial. With a push of a button, some strong magnets, or water, she's fried.
"She's" not even a "she".
Don't get me wrong, I like EDI. But if, when you say your farewells, your conversation partner responds "logging you out Shepard", there's something kind of wrong there.
She herself --itself...?-- says that their association is pure platonic. I'm not sure there's a firmer way for an AI to say "I'm not interested".
Anyway, I thought I'd bring this to the forums. I've come across some very helpful answers on here, so...
What do you think?
Please refrain from making comments on Brittle Bone syndrome, there will be a thread for that soon enough.
Also, if you would please state your reasons for believing however you do, it would be much more helpful.

A running joke throughout the game, in fact.

Pun intended (and IMO fandom's tendency to shorten relationship to 'ship is what the running joke is based on).

(I'm joking.)
(Now, who's going to post some Grand Moff Tarkin and Admiral Motti arguing with Vader about his waifu?)

Alright, fair enough. I've actually been persuaded to read a very well-written one. Why though? Any particular reason?Tlazolteotl wrote...
I totally 'ship Joker and EDI.

It irks me that usually when people say they like Joker and EDI together, they don't say that's how they think it should be they insist that the pairing is clear as day canonical.

But personally I just feel it's a gag. I can't really put concrete reasoning behind that statement as I admit to never having thought about it too hard.

Wait, by 'they' do you mean EDI and Joker or Shepard and Joker?Tlazolteotl wrote...
In any case, they seem to have had more interaction than Shepard does with any LI ... so I guess it could happen ...

And yes, I know she's an AI. But she's still a sapient being and she's a lot closer to human psychology than someone like, say, Legion.
The body issue does provide a problem though.

Joker + EDI.
'cos the rest of the people on the ship don't seem to talk to each other at all.
With the possible exception of the 2 ppl in the crew's quarters, the engineers, and possibly some heckling in the mess.

I think EDI lays out pretty clearly that she and Joker aren't friendly that way. Still, I can totally see it. They flirt incessantly, even before they get friendly. Their little spats are very non-serious in nature and from the beginning I saw a lot of chemistry. There's also the fact that Seth Green calls it as much (a romance).

Pretty much summed here, it' s just friendly banter.

He *hated* 'her' when they first met. That's honestly not flirting.
There's... not chemistry if only one of them is living.
Seth Green makes an offhand remark sarcastically.
And, yeah she's closer, but she's still just a computer program.
Like... imagine I gave you a computer. It talks, but I made it. And it's funny, but I still made it. Artificial. Made to appear real. There are websites dedicated to that.
She's a glorified computer.
And there's so many things not right about being intimate with data.

And yes, Seth Green's comment was sarcastic, but it still helps fuel the speculation.
EDIT: EDI's a sapient lifeform. She may be a "computer" but that doesn't mean she isn't a real person. I agree with you that they don't seem to be interested in eachother that way and I can acknowledge that there are uneasy implications if they were, but the fact of the matter is that she's not like a spambot or a chat bot. She has the capacity to make her own decisions and rationalize them. She clearly even has emotions, something that's less clear with Legion, who very much is its own being.

They're flirting, though in a very half-faced manner (at least initially). The arguments never seemed very serious or barbed. I've seen harsher arguments between several of the squad members in Mass Effect.

Eh... I have to disagree with you there. She is an AI, so even if Joker did warm up to her, at first he makes it clear that she's just another irritating thing.
I suppose what Seth Green could be used to support the pairing...
Well, when you like a pairing, the smallest things can help serve as evidence, right?
(Not to sound insulting. I've definitely done this and I don't think it's too odd.)
I dunno. I get your point but at the same time by brain keeps reminding me "She's artificial. She could go all Borg on you when you turn around."

Well, a lot of people fight like an old married couple.
Me and my sister are told we fight like an old married couple.
It just means that you know the person you're arguing with.
Eh. I'd protest but you're kind of right. Jealousy exists here.
Let's just go with: I'll concede the point that if I didn't want him to be an LI and EDI was seriously real, the way they act could make them a cute couple if you let me continue trying to convince BioWare that Joker would be the best LI.
