It's definitely my GotY, with the only thing that could possibly challenge it being Alpha Protocol, and that's only if I get my hands on it and it's REALLY good. Mass Effect already has the advantage of being one of my favorite genres- science fiction- while espionage isn't.

As for getting GotY awards Mass Effect 2 will definitely make it on a good amount of GotY awards. The competition will be stiff, though- God of War 3, Halo: Reach, and Alan Wake, just to name a few.

I knew I was forgetting something.

Personally, I'm really tired of hearing about Alan Wake. I'm sure it'll be good and that I'll like it, but the hype is pretty ridiculous, and I'm naturally wary of hyped games.

I'm *hoping* Starcraft 2 will be better. I have many fond memories of the first one and the sequel has big shoes to fill.

Maybe Red Dead: Redemption will be a runner-up for game of the year. I'm gonna get it because I'm a fan of Rockstar and so far so good.

Since ME2 came out so early in the year it might face added difficulty being declared GOTY since it won't be fresh in people's minds.

Of the games I've played this year it's up there with Bayonetta which is one of the best action games I've ever played. Too many people are worried about looking cool in front of their friends and passing on it, fools.

Dunno. I tried the Bayonetta demo and while it was fun it was a bit too mindless for me.

Too early to call, like has been said. It is personal GotY though. I'm on my 3rd/4th playthrough now, and I'm pretty sure nothing else is going to come anywhere near that unless RDR turns out to be as awesome as it sounds.

Ultimately, I think it's going to come up short, though. There's some big hitters this year. Namely, Halo: Reach, though it pains me to say so. I will admit, I do enjoy Halo, mostly for the co-op with my bro, but nonetheless, it's like Madden winning GotY at this point.

I'm going to call this now though. ME3 will take GotY in its respective year.

Also, I take offense to the PS3 comment on the poll. Haters gonna hate, eh?:D

Mass Effect 2 will most likely be in the running for GOTY, but I have to agree that it may not win. Its not simply because it came out so early either, its an amazing, and addictive game, as we all know. The problem is Halo: Reach, and all the other heavy hitters coming out later in the year. Personally, I'm not really a fan of the Halo series. I mean, I'll play it, its alright in doses I guess you could say. But I find it over-hyped and undeserving of such a large amount of followers. Alot of my friends disagree with me on that point, and I am forced to switch to game chat even when playing single player games just to get the repeated praise of Reach to stop. I watched the Beta trailer too, wasn't impressed.

But I digress, I wouldn't see anything wrong with ME2 getting the GOTY, but deep down, I know its very unlikely to happen.

I certainly think it deserves it. What a start to the year for gamers, when BioWare releases one of the best action adventure games to date.

I think Red Dead Redemption might walkaway with it though. most due to the fact that is has online modes. Either that or if Bungie release another 3 versions of Halo 3 in hope they get to be crowned game of the year again.

No beer and no Alan Wake makes Homer go something something.

I honestly do not care if Mass Effect 2 gets to be the game of the year. It does not add any more value to the game itself. Maybe it will boost sales for a few weeks but that's it.

To be honest though. GOTY awards are the most pointless game awards.

They seem to go off the qauntity sold, not how well the game was made. 50+ games could end up being given the GOTY title, and its for that reason the award had become a joke.

What I think BioWare need, is a Bafta. If Kane & Lnych piece o' ****e can win one. I don't see why BioWare who give nothing but qaulity games with some of the best writing, can't get one either.

Yes.

If there was a category in the Oscars for video games, it should also win that.

ME2 is the game that has blown me away the most since I first played Phoenix Wright on DS. The game is absolutely fantastic and my first time playing it I progressed as slowly as I could on purpose just to drag it out more. And I got teary eyed multiple times, even cried at two parts. It's just so immensly emotional and immersive, I love it to bits.

To me, the only possible challenge to ME2 would be Metroid: The Other M. But I doubt we'll see anything as breathtaking as when we played Samus in 3D for the first time in Metroid Prime 1, hence ME2 will probably win the cake big time for me. Starcraft 2 and Halo Reach are really dangerous opponents for awards though, I know they'll be really popular.

ME2 is a good game but also a HUGE disappointment.

No, for GOTY I am looking forward Reach and Alan Wake!

The year is not over yet... hell we're not even halfway through, it's rather premature to talk about a GotY.

Yeah it should, although i feel it has competition against the likes of halo reach, red dead redemption and a few other games.

The Witcher 2, Star Craft 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Alan Wake are all lurking in the corners. Frankly, I would love to see any of them beat ME2. This is primarily because ME2 is pretty awesome (albeit with some retarded design, ammo, gas masks in vacuum, costume DLC ect). I would like to see some come close.

Starcraft 2....I am not so thrilled about. I just hope its as good as Dawn of War and its expansions. Nothing I have seen from it really makes it seem fun to me. The first was more of a technical click fest than a strategy game.

The game has subpar shooter combat compared to other shooters on the market and subpar story and characterizations compared to any previous BW game. What about that screams GoTY to anyone? /boggle

Eh, I didn't like ME2 as much as I thought I would. (got over-hyped I think, then it didn't meet my expectations.) So while it's a good game, I personally don't think it'll win GOTY. If Reach does well, I think that's basically the automatic GOTY right there. Otherwise, there's a bunch of good games coming out this year as well. I'd love to see ME2 get awards, but I don't think it'll win this particular one.

That it balances the shooter/RPG mix much, much better then ME1 (infinite ammo? Really?)
It's a fun and challenging shooter, certainly miles more interesting and challenging them ME1. Sure, not the best I've ever played, but it has one of the best stories I've seen in a shooter, and indeed RPG, though not as good as ME1's or Kotor's maybe, but it's a continuity of ME1 anyway.
Go rave about the tragic loss of Liara as a party character and no more ten-hours omni-gelling crap guns if you want, but generally ME2 is much better. Some RPG aspects are worse, true (no inventory is radical), but to me RPG'S are being able to make decisions that affect the outcome of the story, customizing your characters appearance and equipment, interractions and romances (admiteddly, most of the scenes and the Jacob romance in ME2 were poor compared to the ME1 scenes) with characters and squad members (nearly every character had more depth imo, and some of the romances have some pretty decent writing) and making moral choices (improved with interrupt system, suicide mission which includes the whole squad and hugely depends on your decisions in the game and then, N7 missions).
Add to the fact instead of running around three different building models and one spaceship model every damn exploration session in ME1, compared to the unique appearing and unique objective wise N7 missions (some don't even require fighting) and the import tool...

As Kasumi would say:

"ME1 could get Game of the year in their sleep. And ME2's better"

yes, without a doubt. Especially stacked up beside the likes of MW2. Though I do think Bad Company 2 would be another contender.

We'll have to wait until the end of the year I suppose.
- Is this really disputed?

At any rate, I would be very surprised if I didn't come across a better interactive experience this year, considering Valve's rumours of a Portal 2 release prior to the holidays...
