But I'd not vote for ME 2, and given the lack of alternatives I think I'd just have to refrain from voting.

Bioshock? 1st Bio was great, but 2 was just ****in' the same as 1st game.
GoW3? Lol, no.
BFBC2? Good. Nothing more, nothing less.
Final Fantasy MCMXIIXIXIVII? No. jRPG can't be GOTY.

It's a fun and challenging shooter, certainly miles more interesting and challenging them ME1. Sure, not the best I've ever played, but it has one of the best stories I've seen in a shooter, and indeed RPG, though not as good as ME1's or Kotor's maybe, but it's a continuity of ME1 anyway.
Go rave about the tragic loss of Liara as a party character and no more ten-hours omni-gelling crap guns if you want, but generally ME2 is much better. Some RPG aspects are worse, true (no inventory is radical), but to me RPG'S are being able to make decisions that affect the outcome of the story, customizing your characters appearance and equipment, interractions and romances (admiteddly, most of the scenes and the Jacob romance in ME2 were poor compared to the ME1 scenes) with characters and squad members (nearly every character had more depth imo, and some of the romances have some pretty decent writing) and making moral choices (improved with interrupt system, suicide mission which includes the whole squad and hugely depends on your decisions in the game and then, N7 missions).
Add to the fact instead of running around three different building models and one spaceship model every damn exploration session in ME1, compared to the unique appearing and unique objective wise N7 missions (some don't even require fighting) and the import tool...
As Kasumi would say:
"ME1 could get Game of the year in their sleep. And ME2's better"
The problem with this, I feel, is that ME1 didn't get game of the year on its merits as a shooter. Yes, its true, ME2 is vastly surperior in terms of being a shooter. But it still fails to match up with the big boys in that regard.
Where ME1 succeeded, and the reason it got game of the year (and incidentally was named IGN's top game ever on Xbox 360), was its rich story about humanity's struggles to find their place in the galaxy, the innovative dialogue wheel and fully voice main character that brought a much more cinematic feel to the dialogue mechanism BioWare had been using, and the intricate, fully described setting in which the game took place. Those are the elements of ME1 that made it great. And in those areas ME2 either stands pat or suffers in comparison.
ME2's story is closer to its other shooter brethern than it is to ME1 or KotoR or Jade Empire. Its very straightforward and simple. Some of the loyalty missions are good, but overall I really think the main story was subpar and failed to fully integrate the squad characters in any meaningful way.
Nothing much has changed with the dialogue wheel other than interrupts. That's a slight improvement, but nothing truly innovative.
And finally I honestly believe the characterization of the galaxy and the main theme of ME1's setting were forgotten or abandoned in ME2. The sense of wonder that was inherent in the setting of the original--you saw it in everything from cut scenes to the musical score--was replaced with a generic "grimdark" caricterature that could have been any sci fi setting, complete with characters that were more cartoonish and over the top rather than concrete and real.
So no, I don't think ME2 deserves game of the year. I don't know what game does deserve it yet, but ME2 is certainly not the best shooter (not even close) and it fails to be as beautifully constructed or innovative as the original game. Though I know it is a quality title, I found it disappointing overall.

Yes, the mainstory is slightly suckish, but often the story sandwiched in the middle of the first and final installment in books, T.V and games is. Like you said, some of the loyalty stories are good. And the story isn't poor at all-just not up to some of Bioware's standards.
I thought the characters were more realistic and more interseting, but opinions differ. Yes, Jasob is stupid.
Even if they are over the top (Jack, Kasumi), that doesn't make them bad characters, and Sci-fi's aren't reknowned for hugely realistic characters.
I didn't think the setting was that depressing-it more showcased the harsher enviorments of the galaxy the first game pretty much ignored. It's not like those bleak, dull Sci-fi's with no colour or anything. ME1+2 are very colourful games. If anything, planets like Feros in ME1 are bleak and depressing imo.
But we can agree to disagree.

ME2 is good, but not that good, especially as a bastardized shooter/RPG hybrid. If I want a shooter where thinking is recommended and my character evolves I'll break out Dues Ex. If I want an active RPG I break out ME1 or Sacred 2/Diablo series. ME2 just kinda sits in the middle trying to reach out to everyone and not really reaching greatness as anything at all.
Now let me go get a skillet so the flames I receive will pop my popcorn for me! lol

As for getting GotY awards Mass Effect 2 will definitely make it on a good amount of GotY awards. The competition will be stiff, though- God of War 3, Halo: Reach, and Alan Wake, just to name a few.
Personally, I'm really tired of hearing about Alan Wake. I'm sure it'll be good and that I'll like it, but the hype is pretty ridiculous, and I'm naturally wary of hyped games.
Following that logic you must've been wary as all hell about ME1 and 2. They hyped this **** outta both...

Indeed. I was very wary about ME1, especially since the Xbox 360's had presumably still not been fully tapped. Ultimately, BioWare did not deliver on about half of what it promised, but I was okay with what we got.eternalnightmare13 wrote...

I expected gameplay improvements, mostly, out of ME2. Some changes were a bit shocking, and I was initially displeased, but as I played on and on, I started seeing the logic in their design choices. For the record, I was mostly out of touch with ME2 news pre-release. I kind of wanted it to be a surprise.

I think that ME2 is the only game that can be GOTY.....there is no game developer in the world that can make games even remotely close to as good as BioWare's games and ME2 is the crown jewel of BioWare......that effectively makes it the best game ever made. Maybe TOR would pose a threat if it manages to pull off a 2010 release but I doubt it.
agreed but TOR wont be out till around sping of next year, but yeah i think and hope it will. The only game i see posing a threat would have to be halo reach, but i dont see it happening , me2 is just all around a great game.
