Should Mass Effect 2 be Game of the Year?

Awarding something is not merely a question of quality of that product (which is pretty good for ME2) but for a sequel there's also the question of improvement. I don't think BioWare improved ME2 over ME1 as much and as good, as they could have done.

RPG of the year? Probably it will. Still, it's too early to tell
PS: Don't forget God of War 3 and Heavy Rain!

Movies = Oscars
Theater = Tonys
Music = Grammys
Books = NY Times Best Seller List
For gaming there are MANY award organizations, from industry ones like E3 to magazines like GI, to web-based folks like IGN. And they all kind of carry the same weight.
Frankly, I don't care who any of them pick, for whatever reason. It's always gratifying to see one's favorite media recieve a large honor, but in the end the only thing that matters to me is how I enjoyed the game.
Mass Effect 2 is damn near the best video game I've ever played.
Were there little things that didn't hit me with 100% happiness? Sure. But none of that overshadows the emotion and visceral thrill I got from this truly innovative cinematic shooter/rpg. I had to play the game through nine times (completely) before I could start looking at it like any other game. That's rare for me: I'm pretty jaded when it comes to digital entertainment.
Mass Effect 2 is MY GoTY for being the only game in a decade to compel me to say something out loud I only used to say when playing video games as a kid:
"Wow."
Thanks for the experience, Bioware. ME3 can't get here fast enough.

I disagree with this, the Best Seller List is exactly what it sounds like. Usually taken by whatever book Oprah is plugging.
I forgot about The Witcher 2, if it manages to top the first game which it should it'll probably best Mass Effect in the RPG category. Mass Effect 2 is great, the characters are awesome, but the central plot is pretty lacking. In Mass Effect 1 you were always hot on Saren's trail. Conversely, 2 has very few short overarching story segments.
I would have liked to have investigated the Collectors some more. Otherwise ME2 is one of my favorite games in recent memory.

The problem with this question is that there are no true gaming awards, per se.

Halo 3 was one of the most amazing and innovative games I have played, infact since Baldurs gate 2. I didn't think it could be topped, but then ME2 came along.

looking into the collectors would have been an AWESOME use of the game's time instead of just rounding up a crew that we may or may not see again in 3. Given the technical roughness that was the Witcher I am hopeful that Witcher 2 will surpass it. There were a couple of snapshots of the Collectors, which I can't mention

LA Noire, Crysis 2, Deus Ex 3, all games that could make it out this year with big single player experiences that may deserve some consideration. I don't see them touching ME 2, but I want to play them first.

Hey just wanted to see if ME2 is good enough (by your opinon) to be Game of the Year.
Now I know it isn't that far into the year, but quite a few games have come out-BC2, GoD3, FF: XIII, and others in the future- Halo Reach, so I just wanted to see if the loyal fans of Bioware think ME2 is GoTY worthy.
And don't just say yes or no. Thats wayyy too boring. Give some good examples. Bash other games for sucking. Bash what you think is bad in ME2. Bash other people for having "stupid" ideas.
And I'll post my reasons later if the post starts to dull or if I see some good ideas and/or stupid ones.
Who knows. Maybe a developer might take what you said is good or bad and put/ fix it into ME3....
So it begins....
PS: Have a poll up also (it uses SATIRE so watch it) and have another version of this in the ME2 Campaign Forums (this is the one I wanted to make in the first place)
Poll link: http://social.biowar...234/polls/5267/
So it begins again....
Yes. Let us move on.

BUt I have no hopes for ME2 to get GotY aword. So far God of War 3 is very hyped, and Im an XBox gamer.

I'd say Red Dead is the biggest competition but I also feel it'll be a pretty hollow-cored empty game. Fun but no real heart/story.
Alan Wake could be a surprise GOTY. It's beautiful , story driven , horror , action , it has it all. If it's done well enough it could be a huge hit.
Maybe Brink when it gets here but that'll depend if Bethesda has cleaned up their bug hill.
Come to think of it , I'm missing another big 1 , the biggest actually , Halo Reach. Bungies pride and joy could be a 10 star game if done right. They seem passionate which is a good sign but will they transfer that into the game? Hope so.
Can't really think of anything else , there's a lot of good games out there that are very shallow. Hard to find a great game.
I would like to see Square Enix get some cookies for FF13. Yes some people hated it , but it's beautiful and they totally redid the lip-syncing etc for the western release. That's dedication!

For ME2 to have any hope of winning it needs to drop a big ass expansion in the fall or else it might end up like RE5. But even if they do that I can't see anything beating out Halo Reach. Not this year anyway.I99I Dragoon wrote...
Hopefully, by the time Spike does its video game awards, or G4 does theres, Mass Effect 2 won't be swept under the rug by the barrage of possible hits coming soon and then later in the fall (Halo:Reach and Fable 3)

Unfortunately so far this year was very weak gamewise, that means, so far it has chances.

ME2 GOTY? No way. Even the lackluster Dragon Age Awakening deserves it more IMHO. The main weakness of DAO:A was, that it was way too short, ME2 was in general a huge dissappointment compared to ME 1

Hahahahahaha.....I've never seen more fail in a single post. You may not like ME2 but by all accounts that actually are worth a damn ME2 is far larger success and a much better game than ME1. Both the average user ratings and the metacritic ratings are signifficantly higher and the sales have been huge....ME2 has sold over 6 million copies so far.
Acording to the critics.......and they are the ones ultimately handing GOTY awards....ME2 is the second best game ever rated.
ME1 was a great game in its time but compared to ME2 it is nothing.
Especially in terms of story ME2 brings a vast improvement over ME1 which really failed at providing a remotely close to good story.

That tells more about the critics than it does about the game. But I'm sure you love whoever is the most popular politician too, huh.
