Further futzing about had things work okay when I stripped Alistair of everything but Maric's Blade and Cailan's Shield, so there's perhaps a deeper issue involving the RestoreFollowerInventory() function and some inventory combinations.  (When I switched the Maric's/Cailan's set to my PC, the same issue of lost party inventory occurred, which is why I was assuming that the Maric's/Cailan's combo was the offending situation here.)

General advice is do a save right after you rescue Anora and before you leave (before your confrontation with Ser Cauthrien). When you then loot the storage chest in the cell area, check to make sure you get your party inventory back and you (and Alistair) got all equipment back.  If not, reload the save you made and fiddle with your equipped items, and try again.
