Chapter 1

My mother looked just as I had remembered her last. Her intricate Dalish tattoos enhanced her natural beauty; her scarlet hair was loose about her shoulders. I was fairly certain that the Dalish did not choose their tattoos to enhance facial features, but my mother was breathtaking to me. I suppose she always had been an exotic beauty whichalong with her fierce temperament lead to her early demise.
My mother’s large violet eyes looked at me with a deep sadness and a small smile played on her lips.
“Aranel, though I have missed you, you must go back… it is not time for us to be here together.” Adaia gracefully gestured to the forest that I was now just aware of, and the small cottage in the distance. “You have things that you left undone.” Then her countenance darkened “Also a wrong that must be made right, but enough of this talk, my child… I love you, and I want you to know that it was not your fault that I died.”
My heart was breaking looking at this creature, my mother, she had become a mythical beingin my mind… no one spoke of her, father mourned her, and I wished that I could have fought to protect her. A part of me still hates the shems, and wonders why I have fought so hard in this damnable war, but this war was not just to protect them. I am snapped from this brief introspection by her soft voice.
“Aranel.. come to me, you have been blessed with a strength that goes beyond that which you believe is possible, let no man or woman tell you otherwise, you will change the world my child.” As I embraced my mother I could smell wildflowers and forest and felt the softness of her fiery hair…..
Suddenly I was enveloped in a blinding white light and the beauty that was my mother was gone. I could feel pain and taste the copper of my own blood. The sting of darkspawn blood burned my exposed face and I could faintly feel my body being rocked and a voice murmuring my name over and over.
Opening my eyes ever so slightly I could make out the face of the man who held me, his face was covered in blood and grime. There were tracks in the filth where tears had made their way down his face. I felt his hand come up and gently touch my cheek, but he seemed unaware that I was once more with him in this world. I heard Wynne behind me “Alistair, come she is gone and I need to see to your wounds.”
He savagely lashed out at her “Leave me to my grief woman… this was not supposed to happen.” I slowly tried to raise my hand and speak. All that came of it was a choked wet cough. A flurry of activity then erupted. “Wynne! She’s alive quick, please help!” I felt the familiar soothing tingle of magic flow over my body. Then I abruptly passed out.
