During the 80's it was banned in the UK. A friend at my dads work work got a VHS copy. Me and a friend (who was sleeping over) watched it, it was very scary. I couldn't sleep and shivered. This is the only movie I can think of that has done this.

Did this movie scare you or have any movies actually scared you with a real state of fear?

No. The only thing that even slightly alarms me is zombie movies. It makes me more paranoid in preparing to kill them than scared though.

Didn't that movie come out in the 70s?  I think most of us were too young to have watched it when it came out, but I have since seen parts of it and have yet to be interested enough in it to watch the whole thing.  I usually laugh at movies like that though.  The only movie that really freaked me out was The Ring and I have no idea why, because it was really silly.

I can't say a movie has ever scared me, let alone The Exorcist.

Back then when I was under ten years old? Sure, I found A Nightmare on Elm Street and its first sequel scary as hell. Then I saw the Shining, Aliens, and Jacob's Ladder when I was a few years older and those scared me worse. Come to think of it... any decent horror movie with sci-fi or supernatural elements got to me.

I'm a 'fraidy cat I guess. Nowadays I still avoid horror movies even though most of them are nothing more than gore fests. They bother me enough that I give the entire genre a wide berth. I don't need disgusting or disturbing imagery in my head. I surely don't find it entertaining.

Never been able to watch the whole thing. I've watched the scary bits on Youtube, but that's about it.

As a kid that Goosebumps TV show scared the living hell out of me. Especially that one with the dummy...~shivers~

Yeah, I really have been meaning to watch it all the way through.  I usually watch only about the first 15 minutes so I'm not really giving it a fair chance.   Another really scary movie from that era, or maybe several years before, is Rosemary's Baby.  Really, really creepy........if you can get past the crazy music, lol.

Rosemary's Baby...

That movie has the mother of all creepy endings. I'd forgotten about it.

the only movie that really scared the crap out of me was saw III. the trap where the dudes arms and legs are being broken one by one is the most gruesome thing i've ever seen.

See....I don't find gore scary.  I find it usually laughable because it is over the top cringeworthy sometimes but never scary.

I'm not scared of the undead or the supernatural or serial killers. I find them creepy and interesting, but not scary. Gore in movies doesn't bother me either, I've seen worse in RL (inner city ER). (You thought Saw III was gruesome? Don't ever take a job in insurance, you might get sent to an industrial accident site.)

I do have phobias, though, and I have been terrified enough by seeing them on screen that I had to get up and walk out of a movie. But I'm not going to tell you what it is :D

I already know I'm weird so you don't have to point that out after I make my comment; but, Signs is a movie that gives me goosebumps. I could see an 'invasion' happening in just that way. Everyone is eerily quiet & sitting around trying to watch the news to see what's happening. Then they prepare their last meals with 'normalcy'. Too realistic & creepy.

The Exorcist, no, never scared me. But i remember that by the end of the movie my dad "tried" to get up and turn on the lights but couldn't because my mother was holding him too tight, lol.

A movie that really scared me was Alien (the original, from '79)

I didn't watch the Exorcist until I was much older and had already seen clips and heard all about the scary parts of the film and its various memorable quotes. Because of that, it wasn't particularly scary when I finally saw it, but it was certainly suspenseful and well crafted. I appreciated that.

One movie that did scare me when I first saw it was Poltergeist. And it would scare me each time I saw it, too, for a number of years. Every time I watched it, I would be unable to be comfortable in front of a mirror for days, and would worry about what I'd see out my bedroom window, or seeing stuffed animals looking down on me, or what was in the closet or under my bed. Heck, even television static became worrisome.

More recently, the North American remake of The Ring scared me. It's one of the only horror movies I've watched in the theatre.
