Ok, I've been playing for quite a while, well for me that's about two hours a night for a couple months. I have yet to play all the way through, so I'm sure I play slow compaired to most. But, Im really enjoying it.

The problem is that I have totally ignored the tactics, and as for assigning points and choosing abilities I've just picked whatever happened to hit me as cool at that split second. Now I've gotten to a point about 3/4 through the game (I dont want to be specific so as to not reveal spoilers, but lets just say the queen needs my help), and I can't go forward. No matter how I try or what I do I can't kill the bad guys and go forward.

It seems that I have to go back to a previous save, but most of my recent saves are gone. It only gives me the option to go back to one of the automatic saves which are way way back.

So as I go through all the familar settings to get back to where I was I'm going to remember how dumb it was to ignore tatics.:(

You can just choose default roles from the top middle-leftish and aggressiveness from the top right of the tactics window.

Dragon Age 2 needs exportable Tactics. Dump them to an XML file or something. That way you can have basic packages that you can import later on.

Yes, I tried that. They still all died pretty quickly. It was one of those party wipe outs where you know your out gunned. None of the bad guys even died, not one, and Im on easy mode. I just didnt want to bother with all the "Ifs" and "thens" on the tactics screen and have to pay attention to all the numbers on the character sheets. I think my problem became clear because I just couldnt do it with health potices any more, and I didn't have a healer because I didn't pay attention to that. I guess I just need to sit down and learn that part of the game. I just cant picture my hero setting down and figuring out his stats.

What difficulty are you playing on? can you simply drop back to an easier difficulty setting? I play on hard and if I run into a battle thats turning into a reload fest I simply drop back to normal for that battle and then turn it back to hard when it's over.

I have a hard time imagining that you would be having this much trouble if you were already playing on easy but I suppose it's possible if you are not familiar with these types of games.

As for tactics - there are some decent pre-determined default tactics if you need them (scrapper, archer, defender, etc) altho I suspect if you are having trouble its not going to be solved by setting new tactics choices. Are you pausing and micromanaging everyone or just pointing them at the enemy and letting them go at it?

As for saves if you are playing on PC you should not rely only on quick saves and auto saves but should make "real saves" fairly often - (no clue how saves work on consoles).

Are you on pc? There are some handy mods out there that can help. >.>

Don't know which fight you mean (there are two tough fights during that part of the game). The only thing I can say about it is.. retreat is not always bad..

I'm sorry if my post is a little vague, but this is the non-spoiler part of the boards. ;)

If it's the scene I think it is, iirc you aren't supposed to win it.  (Unless you cheat, of course.)

There is a chance he is talking about that fight before this one. :P

@Fletcher, If it makes you feel better. I always ignore tactics, I never use/change them. (playing on normal difficulty)

Usually when I'm in a tough fight, I've found that micromanaging is the only way to go. Tactics come more into play during easy fights or during the end--mop up--of big fights. While I WOULD get your tactics setup as best you can, you might have to post to a spoiler-is-OK forum to detail the situation and how you're approaching the fight and get help there. Or maybe it IS the fight you're not supposed to win.

My first suggestion is to at least make sure your party has a tank and a healer.

Wynne would be your best bet for healer, though Morrigan can heal too if you remembered to give her healing spells. Also, don't forget to have your healer heal themself if they take damage. As for tactics, I use: (may not be exact as I'm not looking at my tactics atm)

1. Self: Mana or Stamina <10% <use lyrium potion, weakest available>

2. Self: Health <90% <regeneration>

3. Self: Health <75% <heal>

4. Ally: Health <90% <regeneration>

5. Ally: Health <75% <heal>

6. Enemy: Target of (tank's name) <Attack>

As for the tank: (Alistair highly reccommended, base 38 str, 60 dex asap)

1. Surrounded by two or more enemies: <Taunt>

2. Ally: Health<100% <Taunt>

...and the rest depends on what skills they have. I control my tank most of the time, but I use:

3. Nearest enemy: <Pummel Strike>

4. Nearest enemy: <Overwhelm>

5. Nearest enemy: <Assault>

6. Nearest enemy: <Attack>

Generally I choose to save tactics for activated talents, rather than sustained ones which you just need to cast once, but if you'd prefer to have a tactic for threaten or shield wall;

1. Self: Any <Threaten>

2. Self: Any <Shield Wall>

....and the taunts would come next

On consoles, you manually save by pressing start and selecting save from the menu. Do keep multiple saves, including saves right before you start a long quest (ex. as soon as you arrive in Redcliffe Village, Frostback Mountains, or before starting Warden's Keep, etc.), and after you finish a long conversation, difficult fight, or anything that you wouldn't want to re-do again.

As said before, try losing that fight. If the game continues rather than making you reload, losing it is OK. Preferable, even.

Thanks for the susgestions everyone. Im fighting the man who explains to me how my family died before he attacks. He has two mages and two or three guards with him. I'm sure I should survive this as it asks me if I would like to load a saved game after the slaughter. I have Alistair but no healer, and he has Threaten but not Taunt. I'm playing on a PC and I save (real saves) often, maybe too often, because I think it starts to delete saves after a while. Also going into this fight I only have 2 health potices and my crew is in pretty bad shape (wounds that need injury kits) before I start from all the other battles leading up to this. I tried to go back to camp but it would not let me out of the compound before finishing the quest, the front gate is locked. Im on easy mode....ok stop laughing.... so there is no way to make the fight easier. I also play with one hand on the space bar and one on the mouse, so I pause and micromanage a lot.

So....as I see it Im out of luck. I just though I would vent here and maybe keep others from making the same mistake.

Dude don't start over from that point. It would suck. You're on the PC, cheat:

http://dragonage.wik...om/wiki/Console

Just enough to get through this fight and to a point where you can use the respec mod:

http://social.bioware.com/project/469/

Then fix your characters.

Note: Not supposed to win. I've won before (albeit on the easiest setting), but it was hard, even though the crossbows weren't yet fixed (they didn't get any sort of dex bonus before the patch). I managed to barely get through it by luring the crossbowmen into the hallway 1-2 at a time. Everone but myself died, but it was satisfying afterward. That is, until I elarned that i'd screwed myself out of the Traveler achievement yet again Posted Image. As for dealing with the Arl, he's a bit tough. he has a mage and I believe a tank or two, so I'd suggest killing the mage and his friends, then go for the Arl.

Wait, there's a fight you're not supposed to win?
*think think think*
Um, which fight is that? I don't recall fighting a loosing battle late in the game.

Edit: Nevermind, figured it out through reading other posts. I was supposed to loose that fight? Holy crap! O_O

You don't need to loose the fight to get the achievement.

For the fight against the iarl Howe, you need to have you and Alistair run after the two mages and disable them quickly.
Then only you run after after the iarl.
You may try to lower the difficulty just for the fight.

After that, you may want to try the respecialisation package if you are on PC and try to find some guide with a build you feel interesting, just to let you more understand the mechanics of character building.

I just set all my character's tactics to [Enemy: Nearest visible => Attack], use taunt and regeneration myself at the start of the fight and then just do whatever I want, more fun to me than giving everyone tactics and playing every fight the same way, just make sure you have a strong tank or you'll spend all your time healing.
Sounds more like a character build problem than a tactics one to me, might want to look for a respec mod and read descriptions before buying things. Failing that, a pretty solid rule of thumb is just pull them into the room you came from, you'd be supprised how many fights it works for, especially if you can concentrate them in the doorway and use some aoe.

Edit: just saw OP's 3rd comment, seems your only options are to cc your face off, reload / restart or cheat, have fun...

What are we talking about here? Why all the mystery? Say what your charachters look like and who you are fighting. I ain't gonna sit here wasting my time with wild guesses. Spoilers are allowed in this forum clearly stated.

Im fighting the man who explains to me how my family died before he attacks.

Is it Arl Howe down in the dungeon?
