I did a playthrough and i assited them fully and sent ashley with them, and saved them. When i sent kaiden however and had ashley arm the bomb, then they all died, so im assuming you have to send ashley with them.

No, it has nothing to do with who you send with the salerians. It's all four things, disrupt signal, destroy uplink, kill drones and destroy the fuel tanks and don't redirect the geth, that's all nothing more nothing less

As many already have said, simply help Kirrahe's team, do everything to make it easy for them. That should do the trick.
Whoever you send with them (Ashley or Kaidan), does not matter.
I send Ashley with them, send Kaidan to the bomb, saved Kaidan and the whole Salarian team was alive onboard the Normandy, including Kirrahe.

I hope me forgetting to see him in the cargo hold and talking after Virmire doesn't effect him surviving...
otherwise it'll be terrible when I import that recent playthrough into ME2 then into 3.

I don't get it, are the drone flyers out of your way or something? I've played through the same thing 3-4 times already and damn Kirrahe keeps dying! I've disabled the signal and the uplink, blown up the fuel tanks and killed everything in my way. geth drones, foot soldiers, krogans, everything. and it still isn't enough! UGH he keeps getting announced dead over the comms.
also, when I get to the system hacking bit, I only have 2 choices. "they can handle it" and "they've got enough problems". I assume when you choose the "enough problems" it disables the alarms and leaves more geth for you to kill. if you choose "they can handle it", it triggers alarms on the far side where Kirrahe and his team are......right? I keep choosing the "enough problems" so I can kill more geth and lighten their load.
weird thing is, in my first ME1 playthrough with male Shepard (current one is female) I just kept doing what I did without paying attention to objectives, just killed everything on sight and Kirrahe survived. now I do the exact same thing as a woman and he keeps dying damn it!

Pay attention to your maps and radar. The areas where you can help Kirahe are marked with an exclamation point. Here is a pretty good link to use as a guide for the Virmire mission:

XD stupid blond me had somehow missed those refuelling drones. I really don't know why I didn't see them each time, especially since I always went by that area and never noticed any red blips on the radar.
had to watch the walkthrough on youtube to finally notice. I just can't get enough of the I-CEEE line in ME3 and I wanted Kirrahe to survive
