What patch are you two running?
Also: What OS are you running Bart?(if your still around)
Only crashing at this point and smooth otherwise is odd... Sounds more like a bug/error than a personal issue then.

If you guys are on patch 1.03, well, join the club. This issue has been outstanding for more than 2 months.

I can't believe this. I'm at the end of teh game and now I won't ever be able to finish it? Inconceivable! Will this ever be fixed? Crashes every time during Archdeamon fight.

I'm having the exact same problem, otherwise smooth sailing but near the end I get a crash and then at the final battle when the dragon isn usually at 3/4 in health. I'm running patch 1.04. Was wondering if anyone has caught a solution for this?

I crashed once at the Archdaemon with patch 1.03 but made it through a second time. I can only suggest to go easy on spells and auras that have (big) visual and/or sound effects. Also, you might try to look away from the archdaemon whenever you can, to avoid having its spells in view all the time. With many people reporting game crashes when casting big spells or ones like fireball, you might reduce the chances of the game crashing this way. I used the elves for ranged damage (without having the graphical effects that mages will show while attacking) and the ballistas to inflict damage instead of using spells myself, with wynne set to heal only. Its not your heroic 'throw everything at them but the kitchen sink' approach, but I guess some will be happy just to get past this point after crashing all the time.
For reference, also look at this thread, where people describe crashing when using certain spells and some resolved it by installing older video card drivers.

Thanks Bas, I will have to look into this visual effect tone down. I'll report back here with results once I get around to it.

Well, after months I decided to resume the final battle, having gone through all the relevant troubles in the Castle and finally at the top with the Archdemon.
The problem persists 100% and as a matter of fact the CTD is repeated just when the Archdemon is under 20%
I must insist that I NEVER at any opther stage of the game experienced this problem which is now practically clockwork.
Having run extensive searches in this forum I tried the "Fallout 3" solution as I call it, i.e. expanding the RAM usage of the exe but to no avail. I put the AA to zero and nothing.
I am not holding my breath as from what I see here the game designers could not care less any more and from what I gather, ever since Bioware was taken over by EA all hope is lost in terms of support.
I have always been a Bioware customer but in a sense I am happy this occurred now as I can still cancel my preorder of DA2 and move on to better-supported games.
Popmaniac signing off....
By the way, in case anyone bothers (from the users here that is!!) I am running:
Windows 7 64bit
ATI 5970 Radeon with latest Catalyst
Intel 6600
RAM 8 GB
DA 1.04 (Awakenings)
Please note that - to repeat - I have NEVER experienced CTDs with this game before at any stage (running v.104 since I bought the expansion)
Nor have I experienced any other CTDs with other games...:innocent:

What graphics settings are you playing at? Resolution, settings in game, and "enhancements" set by the ATI software?

ATI software enhancements set to default Catalyst settings and now they are set to application controlled as months ago I had tweaked them but set them to default since the first CTD 4 days ago.
Graphics settings: All maxed out and analysis at 1900X1200. Please note that with the ATI 5970 I never encountered any problems in any games (eg COD, Fallout 3, Assassin's Creed, Battlefield 2) all being maxed out in terms of details / performance etc
I set AA back to zero but to no avail.
Just to be clear, I re-started playing on Friday, where I was still in the streets of Denerim in the final battle.
Everything worked smoothly only when I got to the roof with Archdemon and only after Archdemon has been significantly worn down (and when it gets really interesting!) does the problem occur.
Finally, as I have noted that some spells create problems, my tactics with Archdemon are of a hack and slash and hit and run method with ballistas and Morrigan is using only Winter's Grasp, Sleep, and Cone of Cold

Hate to tell you, but that doesn't matter. For whatever reason, and I am certainly not defending it, but DA:O is coded differently than a lot of other games, including Bioware games. I just got done playing Mass Effect 2 on higher settings and with less trouble than Dragon Age. DA:O is *very* CPU intensive. A hotrod graphics card will only help so much. You list an Intel 6600 processor... is that an E6600 or a Q6600 (Quad core)?
If you really want to resolve this, or at least test this, then I suggest you try it on a lower resolution. The point you're talking about in the battle, when the Archdemon is low on health, triggers a final phase. It flies and repositions, and more reinforcements are spawned. A lot more crunching happens all at once.
I don't know if that's the ultimate answer for you, but I encourage you to try it. From a pure hardware standpoint, that's the next step.
Beyond that, I suppose there is always the question of 3rd party mods, which I'm seeing more and more people reporting problems with. Any of those installed?
Hope that helps,
RI

Thanks RI, no 3rd party mods installed and I am running an E6600 (which would have been replaced by now but for the Sandy Bridge debacle by Intel but that is a different tale!!!).
I understand the point of your comments re CPU and will try in lower resolution.
Though, having read through various CTD issues here, I have noted that most problems have appeared with 1.03 and 1.04.
What if I unistall game totally, reinstall and run on 1.02? Then of course the question is whether the saves and characters that are now on 1.04 will run on 1.02 and that is too big a risk to take

Reverted to 1.02 and everything worked fine, all graphics maxed, no crashes whatsoever, no problems
