From what I understand, WoW murdered Warcraft's storyline. We wouldn't want that to happen to the ME universe, now, would we?
If anything it enhanced it.....but thats because the player is essentially an extra in a storyline, and blizz plays out the story like a book, with the player as an more of an observer. (epic characters doing ****,player watching it happen)The issue is that most people get so caught up in e-penis enhancement they dont have time to stop and appreciate the storyline. A perfect example of this was an old world raid, the original naxxaramas, the players cleared it, killed a big villian/character, then went on their way. Later explained who did this, was a now semi major character with the assistance of a group of heroes (the players) The storyline focuses on the named guy, not the player.
Blizz was able to go more indepth with the storyline, at the cost of it not
being about the player, but I digress.
ME is a player centered game, it heavily focuses on the players interaction, WoW was based on an RTS series...and later books, LOTR online was based on books, various star wars mmos were based on movies/books Warhammer online was a RTS and tabletop game, meaning the player didnt have any control over the storyline, or even felt like they could effect the story line. So basically, ME is not a storyline/setting/style that is MMO suitable. For an example, lets imagine they made a ME MMO
WoW---never really focused on the players interactions with story before in the
RTS...so noone really minded when they were given the role of a meaningless
hero.
ME---Games before hand centered heavily on the
player and their interactions with the story, so when they are given the roll
of meaningless space hero, they feel like the series has gone into a bad turn.
Another way to look at it.
Warcraft--A novel, fully written, ready for your reading enjoyment.
Mass Effect--Choose your own adventure book---set storyline, but with bendable
turns and twists.
One is mmo suitable, the other isnt. Both are good imo, I adore warcraft
storyline, and I love mass effects, but both are good they way they are.
