I felt emotionally cheated when Alistair rushed off to kill the archdemon without so much as a kiss good-bye, or even one word about our love, our plans for the future, anything even remotely resembling what two passionate adults might say to each other before one knowingly sacrifices his life for duty.

Very cold, immature ending for a game rated "M." Sexual innuendo and "bad words" do NOT a mature experience make.

He said a lot about his love for my charecter, something like "I can't live in a world without you".

Hmmmm, for me, he has always said, "And that's not the only reason. You know how I feel about you. I won't let you die, not if I can do something about it." It's very sweet. I don't see how anyone could find it cold. I think it's Alistair being completely Alistair -- wonderful, loving, putting everyone ahead of himself.

I actually like the buddy ending better when he's asking the Warden to let him make the sacrifice, though. It comes across as far more generous, and far more honest. In both, he will admit it's partly for the glory if you ask; it's giving him the death he wants instead of the life he does not.

Yes, and then if you say that you still cant allow him to do it, he gets all husky voiced, sad, loving and determined all somehow in the same breath and says something like " And you say that like I am giving you the choice..." before making the sacrifice himself.   It is a very powerful and emotional moment,  at least when you are an elf who got dumped because you are an elf and a grey warden. My end though did have a *lot* of emotion, there was a kiss, a redeclaration of love despite that they had both accepted it was over for his duty to Ferelden.   I *did* stiffen slightly at the words "commanded alistair to" because I was ready and *wanted* to make that sacrifice myself. My character had given up everything she cared about and lost everything she loved for that very life path, and she wanted to make that final sacrifice but she also was intent to walk to her planned end with the people she cared about at her side.  Walking back into the world after that final battle was very very difficult for her.  The cheers and adulation hollow.

I agree the wording is maybe not fitting in MANY circumstances, but I just remember  what it meant to my little dalish elf rogue, rather than just wording on a badge.   Just my two coppers.

Yes, That annoyed me as well, the wording on the achievement. It's very rare that Alistair has to be commanded to take the blow, he either is begging you to let him, or, if in love, gives you no choice in the matter and insists on taking it.

It's the one time in game Alistair actually disobeys an order and overrides you. There was no "commanding" to it.

And it was very depressing to watch. But at the same time, deeply emotional. I don't see how anyone could say it was "cold". It was anything but.

Even worse than the achievement wording for me was when I loaded the Epilogue save. Alistair was standing there in the camp, and when I went to talk to him started the gossip about party members conversation. And that after I have just mourned his death, lol. Seriously, it was terrible experience.
