Hey everybody.  A few weeks ago, my family finally decided to get a dog.  This is something I've wanted for seven or eight years, so I'm pretty happy about it.  However, we've run into a slight snag: nobody can agree on a name, at all.

So, I turned to people who will be completely unbiased since they don't know me or my family, and that's you guys. Please suggest names below, and once we finally get her, I'll tell you what we decided on.  Hopefully it will be one of your suggestions.  Thanks for the help.

Our dog will be a female black Lab puppy.  I can't really tell the difference, but I believe she's an English Lab, meaning her face is boxier than American Labs, amongst other differences.  I have a preference for human names, by the way.  I really like Lucy, at the moment, as do my mother and sister, but my brother disagrees as always, and my dad is fine with anything.  Also try to steer away from one-syllable names, my mom really doesn't like them.

Names I like: Lucy (my own personal pick:))
Names I will never accept, ever: Bingo, Fido, any other cliche dog name.

Thanks ahead of time for all the help, guys!

I think you should wait till you get to know the dog a bit, before choosing a name. The name should fit the personality of the dog.

I agree. Names are best based off of personality. I usually name my pets after greek Gods/Goddesses or long dead emperors/kings/queens.

If push comes to shove, just throw a few names in a hat and start drawing. Last one left is the lucky name.

PS. Has your brother offered any names up to the table or is he just being obstinant? If he's obstinant, just name her Lucy and be done with it.

I agree.  And those types of names usually are the best too.  My parents got a kitten for their dog to play with.  The kitten had a habbit of getting stepped on because he didn't seem to learn not to stay under-foot.  At one point my dad had told the kitten, "You keep getting under my feet and you'll end up as flat as a flapjack..."  So they named the kitten Flapjack.

One last piece of advise.  Be sure to name the dog something you would not regret yelling in public.  I heard of this one guy who named his dog: Sex.  And, Sex, got away.  Now picture a guy walking around a neighbor yelling the dogs name.  Yeah...that didn't end well.

Does she not already have a name?

We kept my dogs name the same because we didn't want to change it.

I named both of my dogs after owning them for a few hours. The names just came naturally. One is Lily and the other is Chewy.

I've got two labs, and the first one we had trouble finding a suitable name. But our second one, a yellow lab, was no problem...after a couple hours of her cheerful goofiness and general anxiousness (she's a pound puppy) we started calling her "Butters." It takes time but you’ll find a good one that fits.

Yeah, I'd also prefer to name it after we have it, but I'd just like some ideas. We're certainly not deciding yet. I love the Greek Gods idea, but I'm not sure anyone else is gonna bite on that.

Haha, we suggested Bruce and Steve.  I'm not sure how well those work, but the idea is fascinating.

I know a guy who named his dog "****".

It is funny to see someone say "Hey, ****" and the dog perk up its ears and look at them.

I second this because if you do not call it that then THIS WILL BE AN OUTRAGE!

I have a dark grey rabbit. Can you guess what his name is? I'll give you a hint. Oh and I have a black lab named coalminer, if that's of any interest to the op.
