My Second playthrough was my renegade maleshep. I started out with ashley, went to miranda, then to tali and then got killed while trying to seduce morinth.
Third playthrough was with garrus.

Renegade femshep that romanced Kaiden in ME1 but lost him on Virmire. She hasn't found anyone since and in his absence has become increasingly "renegade"... Im into RP as you can tell.

In ME2 I tried Miranda but seemed a little bland... So it was either tali or jack.
And since I have no fetish with psychopaths I tried Tali and I was well rewarded since it is indeed the most emotionally overwhelming LI in ME2. I absolutely fell in love with her character. In ME1 I really never cared but in ME2 they did a great job and whoever hasn't seen her LI imo missed almost half her personality.
With Femshep I went with Jacob just for... the priiize but tried Garrus too, which was hilarious!! LOVED hos pervert jokes... For Thane I didn't much cared, he also seemed a little bland to me.

ME2: Jack, 'cos she had the most emotional romance
IMO:
Jack's romance > Miranda's romance > Tali's romance >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Ashley's romance > Liara's romance
Tali's romance is well writen (much better than any ME1 romance), but she feels like your little cousin that has a crush on you. Plus I don't like nerdy girls that might look like a zombie behind the mask
IMO ME1's squad mates were the most boring characters BioWare has ever made. Liara's pretty, but that's it, she's boring. I only romanced her 'cos it fits more with Redemption (and 'cos not romancing someone is like missing out on content). I like Ashley better than Liara, but Ashley's still boring as well

I've been intrigued and entertained by the visceral loyalty of many posters on various support threads, all extolling the praises of their Shepard's LI while providing an equally varying degree of logic/illogic regarding other love interests.
My take:
1. Ashley was the most appealing to me. My Shepard was Earth-born, no parents, and I figured he would have been drawn to Ash's strong family. She seems the "settle down on a colony and raise the kiddies" kind of gal. I like her strength, convictions, and flaws.
2. Mere aesthetics with Liara. Many players like the exotic Asari. I didn't. No good reason other than aesthetics. Liara's an excellent character. Well...okay. I didn't go for the "loner-scientist." She gets interesting in ME2 on Ilium, though...
3. Oooh, was I tempted by Miranda. I was touched by her loyalty mission, and by golly, she's got some smooooth polygons. But that picture of Ash in Shepard's quarters. Ooof. A good reminder.
4. Tali's so cute. But a quarian? My Shepard was flattered and touched by her stammering awkwardness, and I really felt bad when my Shepard turned her down. Like when a girl you regard as a buddy and almost a kid sister reveals that she digs you. Oh, man. Awkward.
5. Boy, did I ever not like Jack. Again, merely personal choice. I can absolutely see how some players would like her. Me? Really enjoyed the loyalty mission; exceptionally well done, as they all were. But shifting through the layers of psychological scarring/defensive BS...for what? Sorry, Jack didn't tempt me. And the dialogue choices aren't really written to make her your bud. It's neutral dialogue choice, then "F-off!" the rest of the game. Fine. Easy to avoid the hold. In a reply, I'll try to be friends with Jack, instead of take Paragon (romantic) choices for points. Maybe that'll help me like her more...as a friend.
Glad I stuck with Ashley. Hell of a fictional cyber-woman.

Man, I just couldn't... With all these F words, the tatoos, the bold head, the attitude... It seemed like a female Schwarzenegger to me... Still, I think I saw a video with her crying at the "bed time" romance. Maybe I will try her in my next playthrough...

The first is with the love interest in Liara. I stayed loyal to her throughout Mass Effect 2, and thought the scene near the end was quite touching.
My second playthrough I never had an interest from Mass Effect. I do like the idea of being with Tali as she has been there for Shepard througout both games. But I might just leave him single lol.

That was also my reasoning in turning down Tali, and liking Ashley.
Edit: oops, he said he agreed with me.<_<

Why? Because I've been a goon for her since ME1 and she's totally adorable.

THIS.
Since Tali wasn't a romance option in ME1, my Shepard I carried over to ME2 was single.

I liked Tali, but more in a kid sister way. My Sheperd trusted her with his back in a fight, but didn't think of her in a romantic sense. Miranda's beautiful, but too much of a Cerberus apologist. Jack...Jack's just scary. She's had a horrific life, and my (very much Paragon) Shep wants to rehabilitate her, but that's as far as it goes.

Renegade femShep: Dumped Kaidan for Garrus, her best friend, the guy who waited two years and was happy to see her again (unlike some people!), the one who believes in her no matter what she does (unlike some people!), and who puts up with her crazy non-stop babbling in her cabin.

This.
Ashley is so real, you can almost touch her, that's why I believe she is the best LI in the whole series.
Kelly is my first choice for FemShepard.
