Do you think that the RPG situation with ME 2 is very similar to what has happened with Resident Evil and the suviror horror genres and other genres like maybe GTA?

haha this thread is pointless since mass effect isn't an rpg and never was

ME1 was dubbed a shooter-RPG by everybody and anybody including Bioware. And that shooter-RPG was almost perfect. ME2, not so much.

Actually, ME1 was only dubbed as an "action-RPG" by BioWare from what I recall. The term "shooter" never came up officially until ME1 was well out the door and ME2 info started coming out. It wasn't only used then, it was emphasised, which lead of course to the first scepticism as to what ME2 was going to be like. And that scepticism wasn't entirely unfounded in the end.

In either case, yes... both games are definitely RPG's, even if the second one only barely holds onto that title.

Hey, that wasn't me who said the thread was pointless! That was Gorn.

And S&B, nah, I'm not "still" convinced you're only fretting about skill tree and other cRPG impedimenta. I think you're just suffering a bit from paradigmatic shift, if you'll forgive the hoary Kuhn reference. I mean, being convinced that ME2 sacrificed story for smoother combat sections is a bit...erm. Games aren't characters being leveled. The folks at Bioware didn't say "Whoops, only have 4 squad points left. Best put three in combat and well just put plot line at 1. Otherwise, we'd have to give up squad cryo."

I don't think you're that silly; you express yourself well and all those other typically left handed compliments one sees on BBSs. So, I'm left thinking there is an undefinable something that you've misidentified as plot, and I suspect is simply a style of game you don't like.

Again, don't expect you to agree, but just letting know where I'm coming from. I don't think I have any more swats left for this dead pony, so I'll just finish on that note.

No, you're spot on. But I don't "misinterpret" how much cutscenes and character interaction was involved in ME1 compared to the ratio of ME2. In a game from Bioware, which offers dialogue choices, and the way you interact with the Mass Effect universe, that furthers the story in one way or another. Same with getting to know your crew. Headshots do not.

I cant compare ME2 to Resident Evil 4 or 5 since I more or less gave up on the series when they decided to remove Umbrella from the game. I’m also am not to fond of the GTA series.

I will say though that ME2 does indeed focus almost entirely on combat or action over anything. Almost all of the missions have only one outcome, kill everyone. Leaving out the option for the boss or anyone (except for a few) to “just walk away” or “give up” to change their ways. Something that we had in ME1 on several occasions. So much for any cameo appearances from these guys or getting dreadful e-mails in ME3.

Without enough side quests to do of actual value (sorry those 5 minute missions are not impressive for anything but show-and-tell on graphics) in ME2, there is even less RPG element possibilities as well. There are 24 (non collection missions) UNC mission’s compared to the 19 N7 ones and the galaxy in ME2 is larger. So much potential, wasted.

why do you hate ME2 so much? seriously and all I've looked at some of ur posts and they are just terrible. Just don't play the game if you hate it so much. It's not just this post, but you have a whole thread of why ME2 is a dissapointment when it really wasn't.

this is the truth.  I got way too hyped up for this game, and in the end there were so many things that, if more effort was put into them, would shine.

That's gaming for you. There's no "perfect" game.

Though according to ME2's hardest detractors, it's one that you don't actually play.
