"Human" is the brain consisting of certain gray cells with human DNA and working on hormones. Somehow those who laid their hands on Shepard's remains first and then Cerberus managed to salvage Shepard's brain. Almost undamaged. Although there are some memory lapses and cognition dissonance...

At ~50 years human brain cells start to die. The rate dying is different in diferent humans (as well as the number of cells, to start with) but it is always exponential. That's why immortality is impossible. So Shepard will die eventually, and, probably at quite early an age.

Well, thoughts are heavily influenced by organs and glands via the chemicals they produce.

So Shepard will need a bunch of those to be "the same" ... if indeed cerberus' goal of accurate reconstruction is to be believed.

Glands can be easily (in 2183 anyway) cloned from any given DNA. All human organs "refresh" over the course of the years anyway... Except the brain.

It is a very interesting question, though I think defining 'human' is a lot harder than it appears to be. Plus if you wear glasses, or use a hearing aid, pacemaker, replacement valve, etc. you're already technically-speaking a cyborg.

The brain is where the soul is housed.

So zombies are actually soul-eaters.

Something to keep in mind.

Nah, that's cool .. we're almost there anyhow.
Was just addressing the point that replacing parts other than the brain won't make a difference to personality.

And Shepard definitely has some bits replaced.

To me it feels like that in ME1 Shepard is supposed to represent the "best" humans have to offer. In ME2 I feel like you are just a glorified undead cyborg. I wouldn't be surprised if Shepard is augmented with Reaper tech, that's probably why Shepard's cooldowns are significantly reduced.

Miranda said at the beginning they had reverted to bio sythetic fusion. Doesn't that basically make us, the character, a cyborg?

If so, how does that effect our life span? We may live double the average human life now. Or can we even die from natural aging?  I wish they'd have elebarated more on the Ceberus operation other than "we brought you back to life."

In Mass Effect 1 a dialogue with Liara mentions humans live to around 150 years old in The Future.

And no, Shepard isn't human anymore, he/she is a cyborg. To what extent the cybernetic modifications affect the life span.... no idea. Heck, it might even shorten life.

Cyborgs are humans untill the human brain is replaced by micro chip based AI.

At what point does someone stop being "human"?

For what it's worth, I think Shepard is still a human that being a state which should have more to do who you are and what you do rather than what percentage of your body is made up of metals and plastics.

Although I would like to know what side effects the entire process has had on Sheps physiology, aside from the shoulder thing. Does Shep still need a full nights sleep? Has their weight massively increased? Is Shepard still fertile? Silly questions in some ways, but one's I'm still curious about.

Shepard was not cloned, it's made clear your not cloned, you are just a cyborg, your still Shepard but you have been upgraded.

Sure about that? Jacob quite early on says he's pretty sure you're not a clone. Even he doesn't know for sure, and he's been on-site the whole time.

Cellular degradation is what causes aging and eventually organ failure resulting in "death of old age". Medical science in ME2 has probably adressed many illnesses, which likely increased humans' average lifespan, but people will still die of "old age". I suspect it is true of cyborgs as well, even if the mechanical parts can be replaced.

But it mirrors a famous film line:

"Miranda, you know those files on me? The incept date, the longevity... those things. You saw them?"

Miranda says that the procedure was going poorly so they switched to Bio cynthetic fusion to
speed up the process. There was a ton of stuff Cerberus failed to mention to Shepard, and maybe
just as much of Shepard not prying the truth from a severly beaten Jacob, Miranda, or any other
Cerberus lackey that won't answer Shepards questions.
But from other little things in game, as well as Sheps lab upgrades, I'll go with Cyborg Shep

There are alot of things that makes us human, peaces parts isn't one of them.
Shepard could be 90% mechanical and still be Human, I suppose.  But being dead for two years....can someone have parts replaced,  hit the (on) switch, and there Shepard stands.... it's only fiction,  but still seems funny that the soul can be returned.   Anyhooo.... I'll stick with what i said earlier;  Another Cerberus secret.  We can only hope that Shep gets answers through DLC or maybe through ME3

Noob question: Is there really some sort of "control chip" placed in Shepard's head, so Cerberus can control him if absolutely necessary? Also, if so, why didn't the Illusive Man use it when you go with the Paragon option and destroy the base at the end? One would think he wouldn't think twice to use it in such a situation.

I just beat ME2 a little over a week ago and won't be playing it until the summer. Don't really remember a lot from my playthrough.

Nope. Miranda wanted to implement it, but TIM was against it. He stated that Shepard should come back exactly as s/he was.

But yea, TIM's probably regretting that decision after you blow up the base :P
