Power damage per second is higher for a Guardian than for a Raider because -10% cooldown benefits you more than +15% power damage.

For example, with blood dragon, power armor, 6 upgrades, cooldown upgrade and heavy warp, a raider gets
(200 * 2.05) / (6 sec * 0.6) = 113.9 DPS

But a guardian gets
(200 * 1.90) / (6 sec * 0.5) = 126.67 DPS

That's 11% more.

If you have just level 3 (or unstable) warp, 3 biotic upgrades, cooldown upgrade and no power armor or blood dragon, raider gets
(160 * 1.45) / (6 sec * 0.6) = 64.4 DPS

And guardian gets
(160 * 1.3) / (6 sec * 0.5) = 69.3 DPS

That's still 8% more.

My point is that since most enemies' defenses are one-shotted without raider anyway (and those that aren't probably wouldn't be), it's better to get guardian. You do more damage over time with warp, overload and throw, and you use cooldowns for other powers too (especially the -1.2 seconds off from tech armor cooldown is great for a caster, since you get to shoot warp sooner after putting up power armor).

Good post. I never really thought about it like that. I'll definetly have to  give this some consideration.

I did go guardian, but more for the negotiation bonus ('cos I split paragon/renegade 50/50).

I find that I rarely cast as soon as cooldowns finish anyway, with the exception of throw spam and tanking with tech armour. But I guess those 2 already justify the lower cooldown.

I just got Defender maxed out and chose Guardian. I hate wearin the blood dragon armor though. It makes the game so much less cinematic with the helmet on.

Erm .. then don't wear it? I'm sure with the right combination of N7 pieces, you can look good while also getting the mechanical benefits.

Let's see ... umbra visor (if you have it), N7 chestplate, amplifier plates, stabilization gauntlets, life support webbing ... power damage +13%, +5% weapon damage, +10% health.

You can get +13% Power Damage and +8% Shields if you don't mind wearing the Umbra Visor. Setup would be:

Umbra Visor

N7 Chestplate

Amplifier Plates

Heavy Damping Gauntlets

N7 Greaves

That's as close to the bonuses of the Blood Dragon Armor you can get. If you drop the Umbra Visor, you drop to 8% Power Damage and 8% Shields.

Tech Armor is a lifesaver, I would focus on that first

How so? I think the sentinel is the easiest class to keep alive solo simply due to the tech armour

I was actually wondering about a good bonus talent for the Sentinel. Originally, I was firmly convinced that Reave was the way to go, but now, I'm really not so sure. What bonus talent could be better than what the Sentinel already has?

Sentinels don't need a bonus talent, really... But you can't go wrong with AP ammo. Gives you a nice damage boost without taking cooldowns from warp/tech armor.

That's exactly what I was thinking, actually, although I was also considering forsaking Overload in favor of Energy Drain, mostly out of a frivolous desire to use Energy Drain in the first place.

The energy drain certainly does work for a sentinel. It allows you to keep your tech armor up for much longer than otherwise, and you damage enemy shields in the process. Especially good with Assault armor, since you get to play more aggressively. You can basically storm the enemy squad, drain their shields to keep your armor up, and when it blows up, you'll be right in the middle for maximum effect.

One problem that I'm having with my planned build, though, is that I'm not sure if I should be taking Guardian or Raider. Raider would provide a boost to Energy Drain and Tech Armor, but Guardian would allow me to use Energy Drain much more often.

Guardian all the way, IMO. The damage boost from raider isn't worth sacrificing cooldown for on all your powers.

That's what I was thinking too. It sounds like I'll be having a lot of fun when I actually play Sentinel in the second game.
