If the Baroness can shape the Fade, why should your PC not be able? After all, shaping a part of the Fade by your will is what you do when you dream. At least a Blood Mage would be for sure.

Same reason why humans can shape our reality while spirits are not able to do it -- Fade isn't our native environment just like our realm isn't theirs. The Codex explicitly states in the "Fade" entry that "Even when entering the Fade through the use of lyrium mortals are not able to control or affect it. The spirits who dwell there, however, can."

Humans who dream don't shape the Fade themselves -- they merely visit it, and it's shaped by the spirits who draw inspiration from the minds of humans and create twisted and imperfect copies of what they see, because they're unable to understand exactly the things they see in human minds.

In that case the writers ignored their own codex because the Baroness is - or at least was - a human and could control the Fade........

Key word: WAS. She is no longer, she's a pride demon. Pride demons can control the fade.

Aye, she's technically an abomination when you get to meet her -- a demon who took over a mage.

Yes. Exactly. Abominations don't always have to look like they've been exposed to nuclear meltdown. They can still maintain a human look and form while the demon pulls the strings, in the case of Connor, or in symbiosis, like Flemeth.

Mages can't control or shape the fade alone, they can draw on it's energy and bridge a connection from the Fade to the real world, as well as enter the Fade fully awake, things that non-mages can't do. That is why they attract demons, and demons prefer them over other prey.

But alone, a mage cannot manipulate or control the Fade. The Tevinter mages tried to merely map the place, and failed.

I think there are several decent reasons not to trust the Baroness. From examining the world before entering into the fade we could figure out fairly quickly she is a blood mage using her powers at the expensive of others. (Stealing the life of those girls in a ritual which kept her young). We are also able to realize she is quite vengeful (trapping the souls of the angry villagers who were avenging their daughters).

No matter how I look at it knocking on her door and say look witch you will send me home is going to be taken negative no matter how she reacts. The only question is this do I have any reason to trust her? I do not believe I have. I would believe it to be far more beneficial to her instead to use a ritual that simply strips my free will from me so she may have a few powerful servants while selling some empty living bodies to several nearby demons.

I chose to side with Justice and this is why. In our first encounter in the Fade, we learned that demons use human lie force to create a shadow world. We also learn that killing the demon who is feeding off the life force will release you from their grasp and return you to your physical body. Whether or not the Baroness is a demon of simply a very powerful blood mage is irrelevant. She is using the life force of the villagers to create a shadow environment. By eliminating the Baroness, you stop the channeling creating the shadow world and are returned to your bodies.

Should this have failed, then Justice very well could have helped us find the demon controlling this realm and even helped us eliminate it. Once again we are returned to our physical bodies. Remember, these false fade realms all have ruling demons. The key to release is killing the ruling demon.

Edit: Thanks for the info. Niall!

I don't actually think she's an Abomination. I was under the impression that an Abomination is created when a demon gets access to a mage's physical body. I'm not sure if there's a word for what she is right now. Mostly demon in the shape of a dead blood mage?

Could she be a hybrid like Flemmeth or Uldred?  Flemmeth willingly accepted a spirit into her body which changed her.  Uldred was forcebly taken over, "I am Uldred and yet not Uldred."  If it was a demonic entity she either wittingly or unwittingly accepted, then would she not be able to exist in both realms?  She is quite suprised that returning you back to the marsh also brings her back as well.  I think once she enters th physical world, she then becomes an abomination. I get the impression from the notes found in the Black Marsh and from the interaction with the Baronness that she was unaware that she was actually being controlled by a Pride Demon.  She also seems suprised that she transforms when she enters battle with you.  This makes me think that she was not completly aware of what she had become.

yes, I think it was more of a forced thing.  From notes found in the Blackmarsh she knew something screwy was going on with the areas where she did her life sucking rituals and from the tone of her note I don't think she liked it.  I don't know how much she learned (I may not have found all of them) but something was up.  And I think the fact that she doesn't look like a CHUD kind of tends to make me think at least at first it was a symbiotic/gradual thing.  By the time we meet her though I think she's pure pride demon and very little Baroness left.
