I am wondering if fps in the character creator is representative of the game itself. I am running win7 64bit with an E8400 @ 3.82Ghz, 4GB RAM, and (2) GTX 260s in SLI; and I am only getting 15-17 fps in the character creator with settings maxed and 8x AA. Considering that I get 40 fps in Crysis on Enthusiast settings with no AA, this seems a little odd to me.

Point is, I am getting better performance in a scene displaying a vast amount of high-poly models, high-res textures, and post processing effects, compared to a singular model with a high-res face texture and a mediocre body texture. It doesn't quite add up

Is there an in-game option to display FPS ?

With a Q6600@3.0Ghz, 4GB RAM, a GTX 260 (216), Vista x64; in windowed 1920*1080 with maxed settings I know I'm getting at least 30fps.

Sadly, I'll have to wait for my game to arrive to tell, but common sense would tell me that the game itself is probably more taxing, however that is never a given.

What's the actual load on your graphics card? It's entirely plausible there's some limit within the CC itself.

I'm having much more FPS with a lower config!

You should check your drivers, they are often outdated / or messed due to the SLI thing.

This is why I'm picking up my copy on the XBox 360 to start out with, then I'll grab a PC copy when the price drops to jump into the modding community.

Something must have gone wrong on your side, H8Cr1me...

running W7 64bit on Phenom II X3 @2,8GHz, 4GB RAM and 1GB Radeon 4870, i'm getting 100+ FPS with everything maxed out on 1920*1080. I was even surprised, but still...

Purple Lady might be correct, try to your drivers and/or disable SLI...?

I sure as hell hope not, or there are going to be a lot of pissed people in a few weeks. And it's not only slow, but extremely buggy as well.

Is the game likely to be more demanding graphically than Fallout 3 or Oblivion? Can run both of them comfortably, with simillar minimum specs, though my system slips in slightly under the radar graphics card wise.

I'd say from the looks of it DAO will be more demanding than those games. Fallout 3 was highly optimized, while Mass Effect was already more demanding than Fallout 3 and Oblivion. Unless DAO also has some amazing optimization in the actual game, I'd say it will require a better spec than listed to truly enjoy the game.

I get 130+ fps.
That's with everything maxed and full AA.
Running Vista 32 bit, 1.66 GHz Quad Core, Nvidia 285, 4 GB RAM.

I was afraid you'd say that! The rest of my system cuts it, but my graphics card is seriously under-par (its an old Geforce 7300 GS). I'll probably buy anyway to see how it runs. Not worried about slow frame rate too much, I'm definately a pauser, but I hate messing around with new graphics cards / drivers. Can anyone point me to a noob guide for installing same?

I am guessing the game will be on par with Oblivion and Fallout 3. If you are running those games comfortably I wouldn't worry. Oblivion has a stutter issue that happens regardless of how fast your rig is, and this is due to the way it loads area cells from the hard drive. This problem has since been "fixed" by a user mod. Fallout didn't have this stuttering issue.

I opened my settings to turn off SLI and see if that had an effect and for some reason SLI was turned off already. I must have turned it off at some point and forgot about it. I turned it on and my fps is pegged at 60 which, of course, means vsync is enabled (which I prefer). But it's now odd that it was only getting 15 frames with a single 260, but I imagine that something was gumming up the works, as other are reporting better frames. No worries now. Thanks!

EDIT: I just remembered I turned SLI off to play the Witcher. It has SLI issues with lighting. My bad.

Something's off here.  I have much less power ( one GeForce 9500 GT 1gb memory, 2.20 duo processor, 2 gb ram, windows xp pro edition), have something like 12 tabs open in firefox, GIMP, Trillian, *coughutorrentcough* all running, and when I open up the CC in WINDOW MODE I still get close to 40 fps.

ouch, a 7300 is kinda pushing it. Installing a new graphics card is easy.
  • Download newest drivers from nVidia (yes I am biased vs ATI)
  • Uninstall old drivers. Go to Control Panel > Add Remove Programs > nVidia Drivers, select uninstall.
  • Shut down the machine. Open the case. Take out old card. Put in new card.
  • Turn on machine. A window will likely pop up saying "new hardware found". Press "Cancel" on that.
  • Install new drivers downloaded from nvidia.
You just have to determine what kind of slot you have before buying a new card. If your running a 7300 I am guessing you may have an AGP slot. If that is the case, I am pretty sure you can only upgrade to a 7600, and that really isn't worth it. You might want to start saving for a new computer. You can probably pick up an old computer with a PCI-E slot for around 300 on craigslist or ebay. Another 200 on a graphics card and you will be ready for the Age of Dragons

ok, got 60fps with v-sync enabled (65 when disabled). I hope I will be running the actual game with 30+ fps.

My PC can run the creator, but I doubt it can run the full game. I still will have the full game, since I preordered the X360 version. I'll pick up the PC version when my PC can run it, of course.

It still doesn't make sense for you to be getting 15 fps with one video card. My 8800 caps at 60 on the character creator. Do other games perform similarly when you disable SLI?

In general, the character creator can't be used as a full benchmark for the game. It can only be used to judge performance if you think your video card may be fillrate bound (that's the case for example if turning off framebuffer effects significantly increases framerate), but the final game will have large areas with lots of geometry that are taxing to the video card in different ways.

Rad Just curious... unless you have a money tree in your backyard, why would you want to buy versions of DA for both the Xbox and PC? Maybe PC will have better graphics, only thing I can think of...

PS... And if you have found a way to grow a money tree, especially in this horrible economy then please give me the reciepe ....Image IPB  I'm scrapping after all my monthly bills are paid just to get enough money together to purchase the PC version...Image IPB

When my PC is good enough to play the game, I'll have enough money to buy the game. Of course I'd have it for the mods and stuff, since those will not be on XBox
