It's not HER fault that Bryce is a mage. It's not HER fault that she fell in love with Anders, who is also a mage, and its not HER fault that rumors started about them having an affair while she was still amrried to Teagan. She is a victim of circumstance, and frankly I think the fact that she can still breathe is a miracle. Everything she cares about and everything that gives her meaning is being ripped from her, through no fault of her own.

Add to that the fact that she was humiliated, in one of the few places that she should feel safe (liek Addai said), and its no surprise that she would self destruct. Her life's going to hell, there's nothing she can do to stop it. Why not help it along? It's a very real human reaction to a horrrible situation. Brand is human, not superhuman.

And  ANDERS helped in that humiliation. ANDERS! The person that SHOULD have spared her from it.  I didn't find it out of character at all when she basically said "F*** it all!" at the end of the chapter, even knowing he'd walk in eventually. Though I was hoping at some point it would be Alistair she fell in bed with, but that's ok:) .

Well, Anders is Anders, he's not Alistair who discovered about where do babies come from when he was 20. He loves to discuss such things and, as Surely told us earlier, Brand never thought it was something bad either. He thought it would've been fun. And he also was drunk. And even when he's not drunk he's not the most tactful person in Thedas, I suppose they don't teach mages manners in the Circle.

But I agree that Anders was just being oblivious in this situation.  It's part of what I found tragic about the situation, that he didn't read what she was feeling and that she didn't feel like she could talk to him or her family about it.

But I've moved a few critical plot points around so a lot of the characters are in different places mentally than they would have been before. It still would have been a horrible clusterf*ck, but not nearly as breathtakingly bad as it would be in this version of events.

I must add in Anders' defense (though I don't think he needs it) that the source of the problem may be a big difference between him and Brand. Her memories of the past cause her pain, and he prefers to remember only good things. Remember how he was telling Velanna that coming back to the Tower was not so bad because Rylock was glaring at him and he thought it was hot? He sees bright sides everywhere. Perhaps he thought that the funny story about Brand's sexy life would make her cheer up and be less grim about coming back. Perhaps he actually cared in his own way.

It may depend on your point of view. Think in terms of Anders, what's worse - emotional, drunk and a meaningless threesome or emotional, drunk and falling victim to those overwhelming emotions with someone where there are alot of unresolved issues. Anders might understand sleeping with Alistair more because of her emotional state because you could argue that she was so lost she just clung to something familiar and good from her past.

LOL, wow Jess called it.  I could see that happening before the whole proposal thing, but actually I think it would be even worse than The Hopewell Affair.  Alistair would be severely messed up by it, for one thing, whereas now he's just... severely messed up from other stuff.  And it would have been harder for Anders to take than a casual, meaningless encounter.  IMO anyway.

Brand sleeping with Alistair now would be unforgivable, I think. It would be cruel to all of them (Fiona included) and just...so, so bad. The amount of angsty weird guilt and backsliding involved would be almost impossible for me to write.

Thanks! When I finished the last chapter, posted and immediately began writing this one instead of taking my customary 12 hour minimum break, I knew that it was something that needed to be done.
