I can't laugh at Alistair's misery, but I wish I could.

Aw, if I didn't laugh at it I wouldn't be able to write about it.

One of these days I'm going to write something really sweet and Alistair-centric (maybe if I ever do a Ron story, since they're bros and he does everything right by him).

I did laugh, and then I thought "oh..."

Your Alistair is still sweet, because you've done what many of us can't but which a good writer has to- put a character through the wringer to see what comes out the other side.  A lot of people criticize the Awakening Oghren, but I was impressed at the writers' daring.  It doesn't make us appreciate a writer sometimes to see a beloved character suffer (I recall flinging Tess of the d'Urbervilles across the room and vowing never to read Hardy again) but the churn is no doubt what is keeping many of us waiting with bated breath for the next chapter.

As for Fiona absolving Brand, when Brand apoligizes for turning him into a bitter man, Fiona doesn't dispute that at all.

Maybe I'm missing something but what did she do to turn him into a bitter man besides sparing Loghain? That really doesn't strike me as something she deserves to be horribly guilt-ridden about even six years later. He's the one who decided to self-destruct because he couldn't kill one person.

Edit: I mean, I can see why if that's all it is she'd feel guilty, especially if she drew the parallel so many people here do that he's Alistair's Howe but I don't think Alistair handling his - huge - disappointment so very badly can be entirely blamed on her.

It can't be entirely blamed on her, but that doesn't mean she doesn't take it all. It's what she does. Before the Landsmeet, Alistair was Alistair. Now he's bitter. All she sees is a straight line between a choice she made and what he is now. It's not logical, but it's that black and white in her head.

Surely, well defended. I won't deny I'm tearing my hair out at what you're putting them all through but as someone else said, it's what's making me click on every update. You have me hoping for more. I'm not an angst fan as I've said before and I could never do to my characters what you're doing to yours, but that's why I'm reading yours and writing mine.

laaaaugh!  At one point when I was reading the chapter, when I was trying to figure out what they were arguing about, I actually had the niggling thought, "OHMYGOD DID ANDERS AND ALISTAIR....?"  Talk about dramatic.  And yeah, seriously on the sammich time.

Surely,

You're doing a great job with this fic.  I am seriously scratching my head half the time going, "Okay, I know all will be made clear eventually but what the heck is up with _____ ?" when I'm not reading the story.

In my mind, that's a serious win if I'm thinking about it when I'm nowhere near my computer.

It is incredibly sad, which is challenge for me (as I spend most of my life in a state of perpetual bemusement), but I'm not actually sadistic and there are definite lines I won't cross. So hopefully that's vaguely reassuring?

Thanks! That's high praise, indeed. If you ever have a question, feel free to pm me. Most things will be answered, but I'm weird and have a lot of backstory that will never see the light of day, so I might include something  without realizing it's . I can either explain it or address it later.

I'm very pleased you're not sadistic. I never thought you were, but it's always nice to know, as you can never be sure on these intrawebs!

It also does give me some hope that there'll be a... satisfactory resolution (I hesitate to say happy, but I can hope!).

LOL I just meant sadistic in the sense of randomly cruel. I'd actually consider Joss Whedon a bit sadistic, for example, considering some of the things he's done to his characters (and I love Joss Whedon).

Oh God. Joss Whedon. When he did what he did to that character in Serenity I wanted to strangle him. Not to mention what he did to Wesley and Fred. I mean, couldn't he have given them... oh I don't know.. TWO EPISODES together?? After giving Fred and Gunn a whole freaking series (and what a stupid pairing THAT was).

I stopped watching Buffy in season six because I wasn't going through the best emotional patch in my life and it was just making me depressed. I've since gone back and watched them all and YUP, they made me depressed. Season seven made up for it - mostly. Angel was the worst though.

Still, some of the best television ever made.

That moment in Serenity almost inspired me to write my first ever Letter of Why Do You Hate Wonderful Things? to a creative type.

And, I still haven't been able to watch the last two seasons of Buffy in their entirety, for much the same reason as you. My heart just couldn't take it.

Yeah, my friends recently convinced me to watch Firefly, so I did all of that and Serenity in like two days.  And then wanted to cry.  Whyyyyyyyyyyyy?

The best thing about not watching the last two seasons of Buffy? No Dawn. Dear GOD was she annoying. I watched it with my Dad and he started rooting for the First Evil to win just so she'd GO AWAY.

I didn't mind Dawn so much in the last season of Buffy. But the Potential Slayers? I cheered every single time one of them died.

I wanted to know why Angel couldn't call on any of those when he went on his suicide mission in his final episode.

Have you read the comics? All the no-longer-potential slayers are off in Scotland being kick arse by that stage.

Edited to add: Sorry Surely, will no longer derail your thread with Joss Whedon speak!

Of all the things to be derailed by, Joss Whedon speak is pretty awesome.

Hey, I've just finished reading the first chapter and I must tell you how much I'm impressed. Your writing style, your language! I usually don't refer to my dictionary so often when I'm reading fanfics :) I can't say much about the story so far, because I'm at the very begining, but I'm glad you didn't give me much spoilers in that letter (those you gave I half-skipped when I realized I was going to read the entire fanfic). So, wait for a river of tears from me )))

P.S. 10 chapter per day. I'll catch up with you guys soon enough ;)

I didn't see that you had posted here!

I'm glad that you like it so far. The style changes a bit throughout the story, depending on who the focus is on (or if it's a flashback, they're much more likely to be written in the voice of a particular character).

Oh, I've noticed that the style is changing. I like it too, it seems so natural that different people are thinking and telling the stories in different ways. And I like Brand, she reminds me of my best friend who is usually doing terrible things to her life and when I discover about it it's always too late to fix anything and all I want is to hit her across the face, call her a fool and make her promise me she will never do anything like that again. But instead I have to behave as civilized woman and offer a shoulder to cry on (it's a figurative expression for moral support because she never cries, of course).

And images of Anders with children are not letting me go. I suppose next series of pictures will be Anders with all kind of children I can think of instead of all types of women XD

Kids. They are like that, they steal everyone you love from you )))
