I think it depends on difficulty. Hardcore and up, yes. Veteran and below, no.

I know your pain! Specially if we need both Power Cells to load Cain for a shot! I found that if we clear the first wave and go for the left path power cells and back to Kal'Reegar, the Colossus stop firing at us. With the Collectors Beam weapon and asking his help after getting back to Kal'Reegar, it's pretty easy and cheesy and the quarian lives in the end. But since this time I needed the right path Power Cells too, because of a 3% charge for my Cain man, what a mess! (and lots of reloads)
I just gave up trying to clear all the geths in the way after I ran out of ammo in all weapons the third time. It took me way too long to gt to that point and dying then was really painful. Lost count of how many attempts I did. Insanity indeed!

I really hate infinite enemies, it makes no sense to me.

Hmm ..
Try going via the right path, keep advancing (slow-ish) till you're at the platform overlooking the colossus, and beat 1 wave of geth ... then they stop advancing on the platform.
It then becomes a matter of shooting the colossus until it goes down.

Doesn't it just fix itself then?

No. It doesn't fix itself if .. by squatting it can't get cover from you.

Tried this. It worked (Adept on Veteran)
Hung around at the start, cleared everything I could see, headed down the right hand side. Bit of a panic with a geth destroyer, then got into position and had Garrus and Miranda zap the colossus with level 4 overload until it clammed up. (Helpfully, at that stage the colossus stopped shooting) Then let the Cain loose.

Pretty sure they are not. I play on insanity, and I think I killed them all before starting in on the Colossus. They do spawn at certain points, but once you kill all of them, they won't respawn until you move to the next point. Just move carefully.
I really enjoyed that sequence by the way. One of the few spots where you had to organize your squad's movement to fight effectively.

I think this is the same as the room with first detonation charge. You can either kill Geth for 10 minutes (because they will keep coming down the stairs), or you can rush the room. The moment two Geth troopers trigger the rest of the Geth stop spawning upstairs.
Colossus seems to be the case here. I took left route, quickly advanced (had to kill 2-3 Geth in the middle). Geth near Colossus still spawn but it's not a large force. Infiltrator, Insanity, didn't use Cain.

Didn't seem that bad. Had my allies stayed besides Kal, sniped those I could see, run on the left passage. Weathered some fire, took down the colossus shields so it repairs, and then shoot my nice cain friend. didn't have to worry much about other geth, just concentrated on the big guy.

Charging the room to stop the enemy spawn is a viable tactic that i have used many times. There seems to be an invisible line in every room or area where if the player crosses it the enemy stops spawning. Interesting thing about that it it seems to be only the player can charge the room and stop the spawn, if you send a squaddie up it seems to have no effect.

There is infinite enemies.
I did this on Insanity with the Infiltrator on my first playthrough of Mass Effect 2. I first killed the Geth who advanced down the steps and ran to the cover that was in the centre of the field bring Garrus and Thane with me. Sabotage came in useful here. After the Geth that were an immediate problem were killed I advanced on to the left path and killed and sabotaged the Geth. When I got to the Colossus I had a wonderful time. I brought my squad with me (they didn't die even though I brought them across the whole field) for extra fire power. A wave of Geth came near the Colossus with a Geth Destroyer. I took out it's shields with Overload from Garrus and I sabotaged it. It did all the work for me! It killed the Colossus and the wave of Geth without any problem. I just had to sabotage it every few seconds. My squad provided fire power. Garrus got rid of shields and Thane got rid of armour. I didn't use the Cain.
I loved this section of the game. It was perfectly tactical. You had to make use of your squad and your gun's and powers to advance to the other end of the field in such a way that you actually survive. It's all about patience as well.
I did it in two tries. The first try I had made a stupid mistake.
