Befriend him enough and then he'll ask you if he can go see his sister in denerim. Then go in the house talk to her. Afterwards make sure you say the line "Everyones out for themselves alistar." Then at camp you can talk to him and he'll tell you hes going to start standing up for himself more. Thats how its done :)

Darn, I'm already at the landsmeet and had not hardened him yet. Now I don't think there is an option to. I was hoping to be able to get Anora and Alistair on the throne without killing Loghain but it seems either Loghain gets killed and/or only one sits on the throne

Kind of hate alistair now, seems like they went out their way to give us annoying companions, jory/ daveth/alistair...

only bonus was you got rid of two of the annoyance, its a shame you cant tell alistair to leave permanently early on.

Instead of hardying him up I just dont run him in the party when im not forced to.

Im with rhys its all preference i like hes a good person and a good leader although he doesnt know it yet. He hasn't had a good life he was forced to be a templar although not being a religious sort of person he joined the grey wardens he was happy then ostagar happened and left him a damaged man. I like building him up to be king i wouldn't have it any other way. Its neat to see alistar finally arise and become a leader of men from his damaged whimpy first offself but if you dont like him w/e im not gona blame you for it i hated him when i played at first. Hope my info at the top helped :)

awwe as a female gamer I admit, I really like Alistair and really enjoy the love story to the game between my toon and Alistair. Sometimes i wish more men in RL were like him ... charming, sweet, gorgeous, and a great sense of humor to top it off. He's a bit wimpy at first, but I think its rather cute and I couldn't see traveling without him in my group.

Can anyone confirm this? Do you need to kill Loghain to give Alistair a happy ending?

Yes, unfortunately. If Alistair is not hardened and you spare Loghain, he's going to bugger off. I even had it pre-arranged between him and Anora that they would marry, but my decision to spare Loghain pretty much nullified that for Alistair.  You then have to choose one ruler -- him or Anora. I don't know what he does if you pick him, but I get the impression that his first act as king will be to kill Loghain. So, I picked Anora and that leaves you with having to keep her from executing Alistair. Only option after that for him is exile. Posted Image

Maybe someone with more play-throughs than I can shed another path.

I think he needs dinner and a movie first.

I did his the whole deal with his sister and then chose that line, but back at camp when I talk to him he doesn't say anything different? Is his approval not high enough yet?

Like OrlesianWardenCommander said, you must start the hardening after his personal quest at Goldanna's house. After you leave her house he will initiate a dialogue: "well, that didn't go how I expected..."

CHOOSE "Everyone is out for themselves, you should learn that."

After his approval gets around 72-75 when you try to converse with him he will start a conversation with you: "I've been thinking about what you said..."

CHOOSE anything EXCEPT "No that's not what I meant!" That line will abort the hardening process irrevocably and you will have to start over with an old save game.

If he is hardened, he will end the conversation with something like: "Fom now  on I'm going to look out  for myself more. It's something I should have done a long time ago. Thank you." Congratulations, he is hardened!

shepardcousland has a youtube vid of the process here:

I haven't tried marrying unhardened Alistair to Anora, but believe it is possible. Just make sure they agree to marry before the Landsmeet (at Eamon's estate). Do not discuss Loghain's fate with Anora prior to the Landsmeet.

Alistair cannot duel Loghain or he will kill him. This will make Anora refuse to marry Alistair. Choose anyone EXCEPT Alistair to duel Loghain. My Warden does it herself. (Choosing Dog or Zevran is also amusing.) The Warden MUST be the one to execute Loghain. Do NOT let Alistair do it otherwise Anora will refuse to marry him.

Unhardened Alistair doesn't really get very good endings. The best he can hope for is to remain a Warden with your PC. He's not very happy as king. Hardened Alistair makes a great king, espcially with Anora at his side. You can see the outcomes on the wiki.

I have a music vid with written instructions in the description on how female PCs can keep Alistair. The clips are a bit jerky, sorry.

1 ) Pull Morrigan's robe off her shoulders in front of Alistair

2 ) Failing #1, pull Stan's pants down in front of Alistair

3 ) Failing #1 and #2, get Dog.

He will definitely be harden by one of the above

I know this is an old topic, and sorry for the necromancy, but I'm wondering, if your Warden is a female human noble, does Alistair need to be hardened in order for him to marry the Warden? If nothing else, I can try it both ways and see what works best. Just seeing if anyone knows, so I can save myself the trouble. It's a long game, you know, and I've still never tried it.

Nope, no need to harden him if your a female human noble and want to marry him, if you're a human mage and want to marry him then you HAVE to harden him or he'll break up with you. BUT if your going to spare loghain at the landsmeet and if Alistair is not harden, he will flip out, quit the wardens, and marry Anora instead of you. I personally let Alistair chop off his head.

Actually, if you spare Loghain, Alistair leaves, and will not marry you and cuts you off very abruptly. There is no way to spare Loghain and maintain a friendly relationship with Alistair. (darn budget cuts) Also, if you spare Loghain, it is also possible that *Alistair* will die. Of course, the Landsmeet has a lot of significant events in the game, so tread carefully.

I have to add to this in case there's a wrong impression given. Alistair will *not* marry a mage... or anyone other than a human noble. But, yes, it's possible to marry an unhardened Alistair.

that's...that's what i said... and the only way for Alistair to die during the landsmeet is if you pick Anora as queen.

But there must be other, special circumstances to it, no? I usually make Anora a queen and I've never seen such a thing any close to happening. I always execute Loghain though.

It happens if you spare Loghain AND choose Anora as queen. Alistair quits the Wardens and Anora has him executed to consolidate her power (if the Warden doesn't intervene). It is pretty awful. I tried it once for science and I just felt like a horrible horrible person afterwards. I reloaded immediately. :crying:

I always feel bad whenever alistar quits the wardens or dies because you spare logain so I always kill off logain. However, I do feel a bit of sympathy for logain, so sometimes I wish it were possible to keep both of them, but oh well. ~_~
