Anybody know how to view the Key which allows us to register our games on this site now that steam has stopped showing it due to all the confusion it caused on day 1?

Right-click the game in Steam. A view CD-Key option should be available.

My "real" CD key also vanished from steam and I was left with just the two for the bonus content.

You can retrieve it from the registry using regedit - it is found here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\software\\valve\\steam\\users\\(some random number!)\\cdkeys

It should be under the one named 24938 and it won't have any dashes in it.

Ignore the double backslashes - don't know why it keeps putting those in - I only used one.

Sorry if this sounds rude, but I will never ever, ever, download anything from steam and I do not feel bad for people that get games through steam and have problems with them.

Steam does things to games that it shouldn't be doing to games

1. It puts DRM on your computer

2. It totally restricts specific things such as being able to see CD keys

3. It does not allow you access to the installation files themselves

4. Some times you cannot even patch your games because steam does not have the patches yet (Sacred 2: Fallen Angel was one game that just got the 2.43 patch about a week ago while the patch has been released for over 1 year.

5. Steam overcharges for games.

6. Little to no Customer Support and what Support is there sucks.

7. Games trhough Steam need Steam to play...Why anyone would want a 3rd party program installed in order to play games you bought is beyond me, on top of that you are now making yourself use multiple Terms Of Service, and EULA'S

the list goes on

So as far as I'm concerned most problems people have that are involved with steam get exactly what they deserve.

Seriously if you want to Digitally Download a game, go directly to the companies website and get it through them.

Doesn't really have anything to do with the thread topic though does it...

FWIW this CD key issue is the first problem I have had with steam (well if you don't count the slightly wobbly launch along with Half-Life 2!) and I have around 30 odd games under it.

Or just for fun run steam in offline mode and play them but I digress, right clicking the games name and look for show cd key or some such should give you the game key, the others I'd imagine were mailed but not sure as I got the ce box.

Thanks guys.

I found an easier way on the steam forums. Running the launcher and looking at the game tab under config will show you your game CD key which will allow you to register as a game owner on this site.

And to the poster that doesn't like steam...well I prefer steam to securom and only 3 installs of a game I bought. And I don't live in the US so many options like impulse or d2d etc are not available to me.

1- Yes Steam it self is a form of DRM.  Would prefer to not have DRM, but as of right now Steam is the superiour DRM system.  Just wish the publishers wouldn't add their own DRM to their Steam releases though.

2-  I can see every CD key of all my games I own through Steam, and I have 50+ games through Steam, including Dragon Age.  There is even a right-click option to see your CD Keys.  Also, unless you tell it to stop, by default it shows you your CD keys everytime you start a game that has CD keys.

3-  Not sure what you mean by this

4-  And here is where we prove that you are a liar.  Game released November 11th 2008, yet you say that 2.43 patch is over a year old?  Patch 2.43 released in July 21st 2009, Steam version released August 5, 2009.  So since the patch released about 1 week ago for Steam, I guess todays date is August 12, 2009?

5- Steam doesn't set the price for the games, the Publishers/Developers set the price for Steam games.

6- I never had any problems with their customer support.  They seem to be right around the average for the PC gaming industry.

7-  OH NOES, Steam is using 9MB of memory and no CPU process.  While I am talking to my friends in game even though we are playing different games.  Also I like how it keeps my games up to date automatically.

Let me correct what you said because it's missing some wording:
This part of your sentence Patch 2.43 released in July 21st 2009,
Should be worded like this
Patch 2.43 FOR THE US WAS released in July 21st 2009

I have had the 2.43 patch for about 10 months which is when I patched it but it was out before I even patched my game.

And for the record I live in the US and I already have Ice & blood installed, and have been playing it, and the Ice and blood expansion doesn't exist yet for the US. But I bet if I said I had Ice & blood long installed when the US gets it, you would call me a liar about that as well and say how it was just released.

I'm not a liar, you are just not as educated on this as you thought.

I've never had any problems with any of my 110+ games on Steam.

1. It's a DRM that doesn't prevent you from playing your games, but rather enables you to play your games ANYWHERE as long as you have your username and password.

2. All CD-keys you get through Steam are available for viewing at any time.

3. It provides perfectly fine access to your installed files. They are all under steamapps/commons. They are ALL there.

4. I get my games patched before I even knew there was a patch for most of them.

5. Steam translates directly from dollars to euro.

6. Customer support helped me resolve all my problems, and I have had major ones with GTA IV.

7. Since I already run Skype, Trillian, uTorrent (idling, dust-collecting program) and hamachi running, Steam is really on the bottom row of what programs bother me in resource management. Firefox, Photoshop and 3ds Max are resource hogs.

I think Steam is awesome.
All of my recent game purchases have been off of Steam.

who cares where you live? Valve has little do with the games, patches, OR EXPANSIONS. that is all made by their respective developers.  (not counting Valve Software's own games.)

let me re-say this for you: Vlave does NOT MAKE A PATCH FOR A GAME. the games developers make the patch and give the steam-patch TO VALVE TO DISTRIBUTE. same gos with expansions. if valve isnt given the update or expansion, they cant throw it at you now can they?

heres another thing to consider: you claim steam over-charges for stuff? how about an account that lasts forever.. allowing you to suck their bandwidtch like a leech whenever your so inclined to play a game again? you never need to waste room or storage space hoarding a truck load of CDs or DVDs. my steam game list is quite large. (77 games.)
any game that requires a key allows me to view the key at ANY time.

so, you are obviously not very well educated on how steam works. congrats. and btw, your thing on their drm was retarded and pointless. Valve's DRM (aka Steam) is currently on of the best in the industry. it isnt like Starforce, the horribly crippling DRM that at one point only worked with roughly 20% of cd drives on the market. that meant if you didnt have a compatable cd drive, guess what, you couldnt play at all. How about EA's Spore DRM? 3 installs until you had to call the company and hope to god they would increase your install limit (later increased to 5.)
Heres another good thing to point out. many DRM programs now no longer allow you to run virtual drives AT ALL in order to work. Steam doesnt force you to uninstall some software to say "Hey, we think you might have pirated something due to this virtual drive software. Even if you have a legitimate reason to use it, get rid of it or GTFO and dont play."

Steam is probably the single greatest innovation to hit the pc gaming market in the last 20 years. yes i am a fanboi, but i do admit it has its issues. its customer service COULD be better. and not being able to play 95% of your games in offline mode DOES suck. but it doesnt change the fact that is a revolutionary way to distrubute games to the masses who have decent internet connections.

^@Self Control very true.

I like steam and I am pretty sure that if you get your hads on the discs you can install the game that way as you have a CD key(I'll test that later unless someone else already has). Which reminds me I need to register some games on here.
