Any suggestion on a Bonus Power? I'm running through Lazarus Station with Energy Drain, which inflicts damage, but doesn't restore my barrier.

Don't bother using a bonus power if you can manage it. Other than that, I'd suggest taking just level 1 neural shock that you can use for some minor CC. Super fast cooldown, 5 second effect; can permanently neutralise any one enemy that's down to health. This is basically to just get a similer power to pull without the need to put 3 points in shockwave first; after Horizon, you can retrain if you want pull (I actually think neural shock > pull for vanguard, because neural shock is an instant power).

Heavy Charge is a must. I happen to like Destroyer early on, and change to Champion later. The cooldown boost that Champ gives is small, and charging isn't always safe early on anyway. With Destroyer you get a minor boost to weapon damage which I lean on heavily in the early game, and 15% power damage which works for incendiary ammo.

I do play conservatively with charge early, and get more aggressive as I get more upgrades. Champion works very well for aggressive vanguards, and later on I appreciate the power duration bonus (cryo ammo, pull's CC, even barrier) over power damage.

The +15% power duration gives an equal overall damage increase to incendiary ammo as the +15% power damage does, because incendiary affects over a time period of 4 seconds. I believe the damage increase from the power duration bonus applies to damage to armor as well, but the effect is simply an instantaneous +15% damage (I'm extrapolating from the fact duration affects reave's damage to barriers). This makes the Destroyer even weaker in comparison to Champion.

EDIT: Sorry for derail :S

I personally much prefer the Schimitar, can't stand the long time it takes between each shot for the others, but I'm weird like that.

Reave works really well for me.  It works against armor and immobilizes unshielded enemies, plus it restores health.
I sympathize with you about the weakness of the Vanguard in early play.  It didn't get really fun to play until about level 20 for me.  As far as tactics - look for a video on YouTube by someone named neoAdama.  The video shows a strategy to get past the collector platform that involves NO charging.  That strategy finally got me past the platform on Insanity mode.  It is essentially the "playing as a weak adept" strategy mentioned earlier in this thread.

Not on Insanity where power duration is cut by 20%. If you've got incendiary lasting 4 seconds and is cut by 20% on insanity, it lasts 3.2 sec. 15% power duration of 3.2 sec is obviously less than15% of the original 4 seconds, so that makes it less effective than 15% power damage. On Insanity power damage > power duration. That's why reave does less dmg than warp overall.

I'll have to try destroyer spec against Krogan. I know for a fact Krogan are just a little short of 2 shot on Insanity with Claymore. Maybe destroyer will help 2 shotting them.

Is it even confirmed that all those squadpower multipliers affect Shepard?

I've only tried the Katana and Claymore. Of the two, I prefer the Katana. It has a nice balance between power and clip size. Though, perhaps I need more time to warm up to the Claymore. I hardly use it since I'm using the Locust as my main weapon for my destroyer vanguard play style.

Katana: Worthless, period.

Evisciator: Commenly seen as the "Best" shotgun by the comunity, and has great range for a shotgun, but a low AOE.

Scimitar: This is only good against husks and should only be equiped by squad-mates.

Claymore: My personal favorite, high power, and the reload time isn't that bad. The only bad thing about it is it's ammo count, and that's easily fixed by the double ammo count upgrade. Grunt should always have this equiped.

Katana- good all-rouder shotgun. Powerful enough to kill most enemies with shot-melee-shot cycle. Stunlocks many enemies with this cycle. Fire rate and shots per clip good enough to engage multiple enemies, forgiving of misses. Ammo count is low, can be problematic before ammo capacity upgrade.

Scimitar- Rapid fire, lower damage. Best used to strip defenses of multiple enemies, leaving them vulnerable to crowd control effects. Can use melee to extend time needed before reload, but can also be used without melee to good effect. High fire rate and shots per clip makes it very forgiving.

Eviscerator- Higher damage, lower rate of fire. Very powerful and accurate, can kill most enemies with one shot-melee-melee cycle. Low shots per clip, low rate of fire, makes it unforgiving of misses. Best used with slowdown effects or on stationary targets. Not good for moving targets.

I hate the shotguns in ME2, a shotgun is for me a 1-2 hit kill weapons that blows my enemies away. In ME1 the shotguns were really fun to use, now I've replaced my shotgun with a SMG to give my Soldier extra full auto firepower.

i LOVE the scimitar. the fast fire rate and high clip size makes it easy to hitstun-juggle enemies.

Honestly I chose the Claymore as a Vanguard purely because nothing is more satisfying than charging, then one-shotting someone with the gnarliest shotgun I've ever seen.

My take:

1. Katana - not bad overall, but not my favorite.

2. Scimitar - very good at close range, but it doesn't have the range of the Eviscerator

3. Eviscerator - slow fire rate, but good per shot damage and best range of all the shotguns. My favorite - it fits my conservative play style.

4. Claymore - a beast if you have good aim and can do the reload trick. I can't do the reload trick and can't hit the broad side of a barn, so I don't use it. I prefer taking the sniper rifle and using the Eviscerator instead.

The shoot guns in this game are bad. I like the pistols first, snipers second and scraping down the barrow the shoot guns. The shoot gun in FEAR is deadly. I love using it. The shoots guns in Mass Effect they are good. I love using it.

The spread is too much in close range. In Mass Effect its prefect.

Obviously you never discovered what my friend referred to as the 'Hand of God'. You take a Shotgun, and you slap High Exlposive Round X on the thing. This essentially guarantees that you'll overheat on every shot, so you concentrate instead on increasing the damage as high as possible. This is accomplished with the Rail Extension or Scram Rail Weapon Upgrades.

As an idea of how powerful this thing was, my friend would use this thing, and not only would it kill the enemy in one or two hits, it would also leave their flaming skull floating where their head was when the shot actually hit them.

eviscerator does pretty decent damage, but usually takes two shots to down a guy.

claymore is awesome on vanguard, one shot+shepherds epic elbow one shots all but the tanks.

Though I'd have to say, shotguns work best with vanguards and maybe sentinels or adepts, since they're only effective at a few feet to point-blank range. I probably wouldn't bother with the shotgun with any other class though.
